Don T If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like when someone reads lines straight off a cue card, look no further than Akili McDowell’s performance in The Waterboyz. This wasn’t just bad acting—it was emotionally vacant, flat, and downright distracting. His delivery lacked any sense of natural rhythm, and his expressions were so dull it felt like watching a school play where the lead forgot they were being watched. The disappointment doesn’t stop there. Lala Anthony, cast as McDowell’s mother, gave a performance equally devoid of depth or nuance. Their scenes together were meant to carry emotional weight but instead dragged like a script read during a table rehearsal—without passion, chemistry, or connection. And the real-life headlines? The news that Akili is now facing a murder charge for allegedly killing a neighbor adds a dark, surreal layer to this already bizarre viewing experience. The most chilling part? He never looked like a killer on screen—but maybe, sadly, that was his most convincing performance after all. It’s wild to think Oprah once cast him as the lead in David Makes Man, a show praised for its emotional gravity. And to hear he was also in Billions? Safe to say, after this film, that show just got crossed off a lot of watchlists. 👎 Skip it. Save your time, your sanity, and your respect for quality acting.
