I really liked the main character Jimmy and wish there was more of him in the movie. The movie is extremely disturbing and realistically estimates what it would look like if nuclear war actually happened, though I think it's a bit of a stretch that many of the movies characters would have survived for more than a week considering they all lived within very close proximity of a blast site. The movie also has these corny 80s computerized text sequences and voiceovers that estimate the current state of the country instead of just showing it to the viewer, almost giving spoon-feeding vibes. Kinda comes off as an extremely disturbing mockumentary with emotional scenes between characters being interrupted by some digitized text popping up on the screen saying "Food Supply: Dangerously Low" as if that helps drive the plot?? If you're going to lean into the whole spoon-feeding made-up statistics at least make estimates based on real studies. Giving estimates like "State of Law and Order: Out of Control" literally does nothing but make the movie seem corny and Hollywood-esque. I think the movie is highly rated due to its impact on a generation in the 80s but I don't think it aged as well as it could have if some cliches were removed. Other than that it is still a striking, awakening movie that will have you sleepless.

I first saw this when it came out - the public were often still fairly innocent about the bomb & of course the Berlin Wall still existed, a symbol of issues with Russia. 40 years & many disaster films later, all with special effects & everything, and this old 온라인카지노추천 film still hits extremely hard. The fact that it concentrates on the normal people - kids, an engaged couple , old people, the local officials well out of their depth & obviously unable to actually make any difference (and no Bruce Eillis to be heroic), makes this absolutely horrific. It's hard watching, but it does what it means to do - underlines that there are no winners in nuclear war. Fantastic film which still holds its own, if extremely depressing. Bring a tissue or 2.

Realistic and horrifying. This is a cautionary tale that many should be more aware of. The calm narrator’s voice makes it all that more chilling.

Everyone needs to watch this.

Well documented and powerful.

Impressive effort to depict the world after a nuclear holocaust. Mixing feature film, documentary format and still pictures, the director gives the viewer a harrowing, visceral experience.

A truly thought-provoking and, frankly, frightening movie. A cautionary tale of nuclear escalation.

Semi-realistic portrayal of what nuclear war would look like in the 80s, pretty depressing stuff.

Overrated trash that’s garnered a cult following. It’s acting and dialogue are sub crossroads, performances lacklustre and the special effects and sets laughably bad. The ‘shock’ ending of a young woman screaming at the sight of her mutant baby (kept offscreen) is a tedious end to a drab drama that tries and fails to shock.

The only film that has ever truly frightened me.

A very hard watch that underlines the total futility of nuclear war.

Hidden away for so long, this film has taken on an almost mythically frightening status in the British imagination. I was 11 when it was first broadcast - I don't think i saw it at the time, and I'm can't speak to if my parents did. But we all knew about. It's recent BBC broadcast is one of only a handful of times it has been shown, but now that it's available on iPlayer (the BBC's streaming service), it's available to be seen afresh by wider audiences. Given the global political moment we're in at present, it's quite the time for it to be back in the conversation. It remains deeply disturbing and starkly gripping. A terrific job is done of giving us real people to care about; the coldly unemotional on-screen text giving information and the occasional narrated voice only enhance the sense of verisimilitude. Many individual moments are likely to haunt for a long time, but (as with much great horror) what's most effective is what's only implied or portrayed through sound. or left to imagination. The decision to take 45 minutes of run time to build up to nuclear attack pays off with building fear and dread; the later decision to take us through thirteen years after the attack is inspired, giving a degree of hope but also the inescapable sense of how fragile civilisation and order is. The sense of chaos in the immediate aftermath is also brilliantly portrayed; the way plans are shredded by events, and relationships fray. It's an extraordinary, brilliantly executed piece of film-making that occupies an almost unique place in film history.

Is this who we are? It's unfathomable that we are capable of this. Yet we are. What a grim, impactful film. A reminder that we have choices every day. To look after each other, or this.

This film has a hard-earned reputation and I thought, with rising global tension, 2024 was a good time to see it for the first time. The prevailing word to describe the film is "bleak". It's harrowing in its realism and I love the creative choice to avoid pulling punches. It's rarely gratuitous in that the majority of horror happens off-screen, making the juxtaposition with the things you do see even stronger. It almost feels like mandatory viewing for people who shrug off the horrors of global nuclear exchange because this is not an uplifting story about the common person's ability to overcome incredible hardship, but more the sobering reality of how powerless people are when civilisation collapses. It is bleak to its very final frame and is something I can understand most viewers only watch once. Very well made and a powerful message. Though I do debate the accuracy of some of its claims, this is an important film for multiple generations to see.

One film I couldn't not watch. Thought provoking and unnerving it puts forward a possible and potential scenario if the UK is hit by nuclear attack. The special effects and makeup along with the date of it's filming makes it seem even more realistic and dramatic. The actors are well cast as they appear 'normal' to how you'd expect real people to react. Not sure if I'd watch it again but wouldn't turn it off if it was on.

I thought the general build up in the film was good, and being from the UK, enjoyed the trip down memory lane with all the old shops and way of life. In the final quarter or so, I lost a bit of interest - maybe I'm too used to Hollywood style endings instead of the stark reality of what couple happen in real life.

Lacks any really story telling but still an interesting movie. It's like a hypothetical documentary with a very flat story
