Tiger Stripes Reviews
Tiger Stripes may not have a very original premise, but it delivers a beautiful and incisive story of the monstrous feminine that can stand alongside the great films that came before, and deserves to be just as celebrated.

‘Tiger Stripes’ is the kind of film many of us would have loved to have as we were hitting puberty...It effectively captures the horrors of puberty alongside the awkward and uncomfortable moments that still haunt most of us.

Tiger Stripes is one of the best coming-of-age films released in 2024, and it is refreshing how it uses fantasy to address concerns about transitioning into adolescence. [Full review in Spanish]

In a narrative that sees a collision between tradition and modernity, repression and expression, and childhood and adolescence, it also struggles itself between highbrow and B-movie tendencies.

Even at 95 minutes long, there isn’t much to Tiger Stripes, which loses itself by the end. But it is still a decent tiger tale that demonstrates the assuredness of Amanda Nell Eu with her first film.

It's a body horror tale about change, transformation, and breaking away ... from adulthood and tradition.

Technically a little bit crude, but it delivers.

Puberty is a nightmare and nothing can prepare someone for the overnight changes that occur. Tiger Stripes leans fully into the ravenous feeling of being a teenager and all of the gory details that come with it.

Tiger Stripes is a hard movie to review in that it’s neither great nor terrible. It has mostly unlikable characters, decent cinematography and editing, ok writing and serviceable direction. It’s not great, it’s not bad, it just kind of is.

When dawning adolescence brings some extra changes.

A thrilling addition to the empowered rebel and feral girl canon.

It’s such a shame that a movie with such an exciting concept turns into such a drag.

Bravo to both cast and crew for bringing to light what we still need to change and illustrating through Zaffan, that our (women's) collective spirits cannot and will not be silenced any longer.

A horror movie with purpose.

Might not work for everyone, but definitely worked for me

Amanda Nell Eu’s feature debut is a lively coming-of-age story that mixes the mundane and the supernatural with ease.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jun 14, 2024
The conceit ... is intriguing, but the execution of this movie never quite makes its central metaphor make much sense.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jun 14, 2024
Eu smartly weaves that universality together with local myths and legends, and the result is a little eerie and unsettling, a film about dark things we’re afraid to speak about.

Cynical? Eu is certainly that. But she effectively establishes her points, employing metaphor to denounce sexism and some of the worst misogynists, other girls.
