Canadian wunderkind Xavier Dolan was only in his mid-twenties when he directed, wrote, produced, edited and starred in (and probably provided the catering) Tom at the Farm, an odd but eerily effective psychological thriller. Tom (Dolan) travels from Montreal to a farm in rural Quebec to attend the funeral of his male partner. After meeting his lover's mother and brother, the dynamics take on a sinister angle when he decides to remain on the farm to help in its operation. As Dolan would go on the prove in later films, he certainly has an eye for images, an ear for dialogue and a sense for interesting characters. If there is a problem with Tom at the Farm, it might be the fact that the audience needs to know more about the characters. For example, what exactly motivates Tom's female friend to come to the farm to pretend she was the deceased's girlfriend? Why would the mother be devastated if she found out her son was gay? And that is only the start of the questions. Otherwise, it is a sound film throughout and foreshadows some of the greatness from Dolan that was to follow.

Tom is a painful movie...and you never escape the secrets, violence and depression of what happened. Tom visits his ex's farm and finds a brother that is violent and a mom on the brink of the loony bin.

Am a huge fan of Mommy (2014) directed by Xavier Dolan. This gave me a huge expectation on this film. He also starred in the lead role. But, totally disappointed me. It failed to engage me completely into the movie.

"Tom at the farm" is a torture, but for all the wrong reasons. Seeing for one hour the fake wig over Dolan's head is only a joke compared to his pitiful acting in one of the most pretentious and boring films I've seen in my lifetime.

It was beautifully shot. I started watching it expecting something different and it surprised me in the best possible way. I loved the suspense, I loved how everything that Tom did didn't make sense in a way that made me a bit furious and a bit worried at the same time. Big Rope (and maybe Strangers on a Train) vibes.

Not the best Xavier Dolan's work, however I appreciated it. I found the touch of suspence interesting, I think it is useful to keep the viewer's attention. Then I always love his filmic language, all the detailed foregrounds on the characters and in general the wise use he makes of the shots. It's a bit dark as a story, but overall it remains a film that I would recommend.

what a waste of time- i gave dolan a last chance with this movie but now im done with him. his movies are def. not my piece of cake.

I can confidently say I have never seen this story before. A bizarre but completely unique and captivating film.

Dolan strikes again with a remarkable film about love, family and acceptance. There were thrilling scenes and excelent actors but the film still has some loose ends.

A well-crafted and chilling thriller that keeps your mind spinning and your eyes glued to the screen. It is skillfully suttle and consistently moody from beginning to end.

Das Wunderkind heimste auf zahlreichen Festivals Preise ein und legte genau die Karriere hin, von der jeder Künstler nur träumen kann! Als Schauspieler sieht er so schön aus wie die klassischen Kinostars. Und genau wie im Film Noir lässt er schöne Menschen hässliche Dinge tun. Doch ist da etwas, hinter der Maske der Schönheit? Dolan hat ein Stück von Michel Marc Bouchard verfilmt, dass den Regeln eines klassischen Film Noirs folgt. Über 100 Minuten lang ist der Film - leider zu lang für einen Thriller, der Spannung erzeugen soll und auf den Punkt bringen. Dolan versucht sich zum ersten Mal mit einem Genre Film, interessiert sich dann aber doch letztlich vor allem für die sado-masochistischen Praktiken seiner beiden Hauptfiguren. - Gerade noch hat Francis (Pierre-Yves Cardinal) von einem Tanzkurs erzählt, den er mit seinem kürzlich verstorbenen Bruder besuchte, nun nimmt er den ehemaligen Partner des Verstorbenen, Tom (Xavier Dolan), mit in eine grosse Scheune und legt Musik auf. Tom muss mit ihm tanzen, eine Weigerung würde Francis nie akzeptieren. Beide gleiten durch den dunklen Raum, Francis führt und Tom ergibt sich - in jedem seiner Schritte liegt aber auch etwas Widerständiges. Francis, der vom Land kommt und Tom, der Grossstädter - ein gegensätzliches Paar. Beide ringen mit sich selbst, stehen zwischen einem Leben in absoluter Freiheit und der Angst vor dem eigenen Begehren. Agathe (Lise Roy), die Mutter des Toten, wollte nie etwas von einer Verbindung ihres Sohnes zu Tom wissen. Tom bleibt nichts übrig, als sich zu verstellen und die Lüge wird für ihn zur Wahrheit. Das ganze Leben auf der Farm gerät zur Scharade. Die Farm und Francis, mal umwerben sie Tom, dann wieder bedrohen sie ihn. Zwei Seelen wohnen in Tomas und Francis Brust: Der Sanftheit des Einen scheint die Brutalität des Anderen zu entsprechen. Mit seinen Attacken gegen Tom wirkt Francis aber manchmal verletzlicher als sein Opfer. Wer ist nun Täter, wer Opfer? Es lässt sich kaum noch trennen. Francis und Tom hassen einander, wobei jeder aber auch so sein will wie sein Gegenüber. Dann aber trifft noch Sarah (Evelyne Brochu) ein. Sie muss nun als Alibi Freundin für Tom herhalten und an dieser Stelle, beginnt Tom At The Farm uns mit seinen Längen zu strapazieren. Die verschiedenen Erzählfäden laufen aus dem Ruder, dem Film fehlt die nötige Struktur. Die Thriller Elemente wirken ungeschickt und unmotiviert, da helfen auch die wundervollen Bilder und die intensive Filmmusik nicht weiter. Warum verlässt Tom die Farm nicht einfach? In echten Krimis treffen die Figuren lächerliche Entscheidungen, die wir aber akzeptieren. Einem guten Thriller vergeben wir gern, dass er nicht realisitisch ist. Da Tom At The Farm sich als solcher aber gar nicht ernst nimmt, wirkt der Film merkwürdig unreal. Hinter der schönen Fassade fehlt die Leidenschaft, echte Spannung zu entfesseln!
