Triangle of Sadness Reviews

Apr 2, 2025

Triangle Of Sadness deals with modern problems, especially capitalism, in a sarcastic way... and it works. It is a masterpiece, however it's sad to know that it never got the attention it deserved.

A really quirky and cool and weird and strange movie. I liked it though it wasn't really about anything. The strength of the movie lies in the dialogue and the interactions of the people in it and class and money are just 1 of the many points it exposes. I just found out the girl in it passed a few years ago- my condolences. It's an easy add to all but the most finicky collections.

Triangle of Sadness is European arthouse cinema's equivalent of a freshman philosophy student discovering class consciousness. It offers the illusion of depth by literally making the wealthy vomit and defecate gold while congratulating the audience for recognizing such subtle metaphors. The film positions itself as provocative social commentary, but its observations about power, wealth, and social hierarchy are delivered with the nuance of a sledgehammer. It's poverty tourism for film festival crowds—allowing viewers to feel intellectually stimulated by watching caricatures of the elite suffer, while offering nothing more profound than 'what if rich people were humiliated?' Triangle of Sadness mistakes shock value and bodily fluids for meaningful critique, creating a hollow viewing experience that's as pretentious as the fashion industry it attempts to satirize.

Absolutely insane—in the best way possible. It starts off as one thing and then completely flips into something else, and by the end, my brain was just boom. It’s hilarious, disturbing, and so sharp in the way it talks about power, money, and human nature. Some scenes are pure chaos (you’ll know which ones), and I couldn’t look away. Honestly, I’m still processing it. Watch it, and then let’s talk because wow.

I really wanted to like this movie, and I stuck with it even though it started out tedious slow moving. Roughly halfway through it turned into an endless scene of vomiting and diarrhea, followed by an almost as endless scene of obnoxious lectures about socialism and capitalism between two of the main characters. Perhaps I’m not sophisticated enough to understand the humor or social commentary of 30 minutes of projectile vomiting and sh*t.

Infuriating and pointless

Wonderfully odd. A complete antidote to the formulaic stuff that's usually out there. Darky comic turn of events but never quite a tragedy - or is there?

Neither the Marx Brothers or the Three Stooges ever destroyed an upper class social event as thoroughly as the luxury cruise gone amuck in "Triangle of Sadness." With a shipload of wonderful characters, smart dialogue and a huge dose of outrageously funny slapstick, writer/director Ruben Östlund manages to satirize both capitalism and its opposite. If the ending puzzles you - as it was plainly meant to - just google "the end of 'Triangle of Sadness' explained."

"Triangle of Sadness," featuring Harris Dickinson, was a film I had high hopes for and wanted to see in theaters. Unfortunately, I never managed to catch it during its limited run, which seemed more focused on garnering awards than actually drawing in audiences. To be frank, the film is excessively long and drawn out, feeling like it could have benefited from significant trimming. The pacing is sluggish, and much of the writing feels lackluster and unengaging. The story follows the main character and his girlfriend through a series of bizarre scenarios that ultimately seem disjointed and aimless. By the end, I felt it was a chaotic mess that failed to find its place in the cinematic landscape. I can’t recommend this film. It feels overly long and poorly directed, leaving Harris’s character feeling flat and uninteresting. Instead of evoking empathy, I found myself grappling with feelings of jealousy throughout the film. The narrative meanders through a boat explosion and odd events on an island, but these elements don’t come together in a coherent way. It’s simply a waste of time, and I struggle to understand how it received any nominations for awards. As I've noted in previous reviews, award-nominated films often cater to a very specific type of audience—typically those that find value in films that may not resonate with the general public. Mainstream blockbuster films rarely receive the recognition they deserve, while more obscure or tedious films, like this one, find themselves celebrated in award categories. "Triangle of Sadness" is a prime example of this trend, and I do not recommend wasting your time on it.

What seemed light hearted and funny at first very quickly turned into something quite relatable, then outright dizzying and finally thought provoking. I found the bill scene fascinating as it shows a very uncomfortable side to the traditional dating scene, the power that beauty has to manipulate and the pressure on men to be men regardless of how much they earn (in a heterosexual relationship). The completely dizzying part was how the captain’s dinner scene was shot (before it gets gross) - I actually had to turn it off to get my “balance” back even though I watched the whole thing sitting down! Finally the open ending is truly thought provoking about society, human nature and where we are at on both fronts in this day and age of vast inequality. It doesn’t provide any definitive answers but triggers questions to the viewer. Questions that are not easy to answer.

The total lack of depth, paired with content that blatantly insults the viewer's intelligence and often feels outright offensive, makes it hard to understand how this show has garnered so many positive reviews. It raises serious concerns about the credibility of IMDb, Rottentommatos and Popcornn time ratings and whether fake or manipulated reviews influence the perception of such low-quality content.

It is a long film but is so disgusting funny and really great cast and writing but the climax felt like "is that it or there's gonna be a sequel" in this film.

I absolutely loved this movie. I thought it was hilarious! It was wildly amusing and a refreshing escape from the typical repetitive, predictable, dime-a-dozen movies. Movies that are like cookie-cutter houses — all the same with no originality. Seriously, I’m so tired of all the movies that play-it-safe with similar plots, character archetypes, and worn-out narratives that tend to follow the same boring genre expectations. This movie had originality and creative storytelling that made it uniquely funny and surprisingly entertaining from beginning to end. Another bonus was the strong cast of actors who delivered compelling, distinctive styles that cleverly worked together. I especially was impressed with Harris Dickinson. His performance was outstanding, and he was nice to look at. I also liked the witty use of metaphors to compare & convey a deeper meaning behind power dynamics, societal class structure, and politics. Basically, too much of anything is harmful and can turn anyone into a gluttonous monster. Also, the ending fits perfectly with the content of the movie. Throughout the movie, we witness corruption of power, and struggles of social hierarchies. Even when the roles are reversed, the message was clear that no one is immune from corruption of power. Ringing true the saying, “Greed is the Root of all Evil.” Leaving you to wonder, what are people willing to do for status & power? The ending was not meant to deliver. It was meant to linger.

Poorly executed and mostly exaggerated so called class critics but in reality all figures are overdone und unreal. Kind of comedy.

There are stereotypes for a reason, but do not abide by the rules of these stereotypes, because it takes only one person to break the norm you are used to, so you won't have a nuanced view of the world if you abide by the stereotypes that have been set up by the society of the past. This movie is phenomenally setup. It's one of those movies that's set up in different chapters, and it immediately engages you into the story. From the start we have an interesting conversation about gender norms, and equality. This sets up the messaging through the movie. Messaging about society, class, gender, sexuality, and so on. But it's not done in a way where you're beaten over the head with it, it's very classy, very entertaining, and fun. It's got a great mix of the unapologetic Scandinavian cinema, along with the glamour and awe of Hollywood. Certainly a very, very good movie. Thank you!

Ruben Östlund has something to say, to deliver a message, and his method of transportation of said message is by making you feel bad, Do you like feeling bad watching a movie? I know quite a large number of film critics do. Well, I don't. That is not to say that Ruben Östlund is not brilliant, he is, in that he can find that specific pain point of a sophisticated bully. Yes, he is a bully humiliating his viewers by identifying your phycological weak spots and exploiting them for them for entertainment, and from his own perspective, and motivation, make social commentary. He is successful in this regard, for sure. The above applies for all his films, including this one, but here his bullying is less pronounced, and his social commentary more pronounced. The more up yours critics thinks this is a degradation of sorts. The reduction of bullying is somehow a reduction of quality. It is not. BDSM is not my thing. Ruben, "this is the way", grab a mjöd.

A discombobulated mess. Not a single believable nor likeable character.

Horror. Disgusting. Unbelievable.

While “The Menu” traced pettily in transfixing fashion with horrific disturbance, Ostlund earlier boarded an almost similar getaway in pure satirical form of sporadic amusement towards the astuteness underlying the ideally, shallowly-written characters without much justifying engagement – unless that’s the intended satirical extent that’s otherwise been proven further intolerable, let alone inactively memorable. The screenplay’s targeted thematic aspect intellectually grows with a challenging thrust that evaluates true nature, becoming a class departure in testing its prophetically expositional hypothesis, whilst unexpectedly triggers karmic hilarity at a grossing cost. Amidst the problematic balance, you get a genius execution from Harrelson, uncovering nuances attributed by Dickinson and De Leon, certain mimicry by Berlin, and growing humanity shared between Buric and Folly. I thought the movie was humorous in a different kind of way, until the point that it showed Carl and Abigail together in that orange thing. It was funny when it kept repeating that scene every morning, Carl climbing out of that thing Should have left that to the viewers imagination too whether they were having a sexual relationship, it just ruined it for me.
