I totally see why people like this movie, but it didn’t do it for me. It’s in a weird state between ambiguous and overly explanatory. There’s not much uncertainty about what actually happens; once you understand it, it’s not really up for debate. But at the same time, you spend most of the film just kind of staring and waiting for it to start making sense. It really doesn’t come together until the very last scene. Maybe it would be better on a rewatch, but I don’t really care to. Plus, I found it a bit slow; maybe we could take some of the time spent lingering on the same shot for minutes on end and put it towards some real backstory? Some shots are absolutely gorgeous, but there’s more to a film than just pretty scenes. And in contrast, some of the camera work felt downright amateur, with bouncy, unstable scenes and out-of-focus shots. Overall, it’s a unique film and it has some merits (mostly its aesthetic), but I wouldn’t recommend it. This movie reads like Jonathan Glazer saw the book in a bookstore, read part of the back flap and said, 'Oh, I got this' and then made this movie. This movie is not an adaptation of the book. It is an insult to the author's original intent and masterful storytelling. But I guess one can't expect much from the same guy who made 'Birth,' one of the stupidest, most pretentious movies ever made in the history of cinema.
