What to Know

Critics Consensus

Valentine is basically a formulaic throwback to conventional pre-Scream slasher flicks. Critics say it doesn't offer enough suspense or scares to justify its addition to the genre.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com Jamie Blanks' Valentine has aged rather well. A movie I didn't care for at the time of its release, I now see a lot more of merit in this slasher than I did back in 2001. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 14, 2019 Full Review Lisa Schwarzbaum Entertainment Weekly Rated: D Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Lisa Alspector Chicago Reader The contradictory sexual politics in this lightweight slasher suggest that at some point it was meant to satirize the traditional mores of the self-satisfied female characters. Feb 28, 2007 Full Review Rocco T. Thompson Rue Morgue Magazine Unlike the charmingly 90s Urban Legend, Jamie Blanks’ follow-up was late to the party, running on the previous decade’s creative fumes. Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The frequent jump-scares and the various women spontaneously finding themselves in ill-lit, isolated locations prove to be only middlingly creative. Rated: 3/10 Sep 22, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy There's a final twist that doesn't make sense on any of about 10,000 levels. Rated: 1.5/4 May 16, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Farah R Although not as bad as the low ratings and terrible reviews make it seem, Valentine is still a mediocre slasher that’s only good to waste a couple of boring hours. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review Andrew H Valentine isn’t a good film, but it’s endlessly watchable. The plot’s obvious; the twist lands like a brick on a pillow, and every actor looks monumentally bored. Seriously, you can see them thinking about lunch as they act—but that’s the charm. It’s glossy, cheesy, and totally of its time. The killer design is fantastic, the mood is weirdly hypnotic, and it nails that “so bad it’s good” sweet spot. Urban Legend, also directed by Jamie Blanks, might be technically better—snappier script, better acting, more energy—but Valentine hits differently. It’s a boring, beautiful mess… and I love it for that. Though let’s be clear, Urban Legend was a better movie. It's an outstanding double bill, though Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Stanny R Fine 00s aesthetic throwback. The film is fairly predictable and suffers from weak, fairly lazy writing and bad characters we’re supposed to care about. Denise Richards is good of course as is the special makeup department as there’s a few decent kills. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Horror C Really enjoyed it! Something different Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/09/23 Full Review Leonel S This film was great and it had an amazing cast and great humor and kills in it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/23/23 Full Review DYSEN P There's better valentine themed horror films out there and this is not one of them. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
