Victoria Reviews

Nov 26, 2024

This movie is awful to and if this was made in the Hollywood at least it would have been watchable. As usual Europium made movies lack of pragmatism and more than 2/3 of its running time just waste to point at single shot and edifices etc...

This movie sucks so bad it’s hard to find words to describe it. I’ve never felt so frustrated and ready for a movie to end in my life.

1001 movies to see before you die (added later). This movie touched on so many issues: youth aimlessness, youth failures, EU crime, EU police, EU workforce, raves, EU prisons, organized crime. All in a shaky camera format made it a little odd, but more real, like we were along for the crazy ride. The whole time I was worried about the girl, but I guess she did alright. The police reaction at the end seemed a bit over the top and too fast, but then again i've never been part of it. Were the morals good? No. But I guess they don't need to be. RUS.

Many people miss the possible point of the film , which could even be interpreted as a supernatural horror. It turns on when Victoria plays the Mephisto Waltz when Victoria reveals her real character and changes from a seemingly innocent in danger , to become the Faustian protagonist who will witness and in some way facilitate the doom of all the others while she walks away freely.

It was an interesting watch, and the 2+ hours did not feel too long in my opinion. The acting and the story capture the vibe of an out-of-control party night well, but borders on plain illogical instances that I just couldn't get over, and therefore I really could not get into this film. In particular, the fact that she did not know them beforehand and just agreed and followed along. I feel the story could have addressed the motivation of the characters just a tad more, and that would have made the movie a lot better for me. I feel this was attempted with hints of their back story, but I would have enjoyed knowing more. From a technical perspective, the one-shot take was impressive, and I do believe it is appropriate for the story.

Despite its shortcomings, Sebastian Schipper's Victoria needs to be seen for its wild one-take shot spanning well over two hours. The plot is simplistic: after a night of partying in Berlin, a young woman meets four men on her way home and eventually agrees to partake in a robbery as the getaway driver. The characters are simplistic: they are drunken louts who continually make bad decisions, traits most viewers will have trouble relating to. Additionally, some of the dialogue early on is difficult to understand, probably due to the logistics of the lengthy take, an annoying but forgivable sin. But the single extended take is a joy to watch, an unimaginable feat considering the action sequences and the tight quarters often involved, and more than compensates for the film's inadequacies.

Imagine if she messed up the piano recital, 45 minutes in. Unless it plays a role in the story or is particularly cleverly done, the one-take feature film is a bit like running a marathon while balancing an egg on a spoon; yeah, it's impressive and clearly took considerable effort to pull off, but at the end of the day it's just an unnecessary added self-challenge. Victoria is a solid, intimate thriller that seldom feels as if it benefits greatly from the its lack of cuts. At some points, its actually something of a detriment, as you are totally aware that when certain characters begin to part ways, they will be drawn back together almost immediately for the sake of plot and artistry; the premise constrains the plot. For contrast, take the 2002 Aleksandr Sokurov film Russian Ark - the film is restricted to a single grand building and the continuous flow reflects the dreamlike drifting between time periods and blends well with the wandering from room to room. Design like that feels as if it actually takes advantage of the shooting style rather than just taking on a challenge. One of Victoria's more distinctive features among its relatively exclusive single-take peers is the use of sound; in films such as 1917, the audio is deliberately designed to place the viewer in the shoes of the protagonists, focusing on ambient noise and dialogue exclusively to complement the realistic flow of time. Victoria, by contrast, has a few stretches where it removes all natural sound and replaces it with a soundtrack; it's not necessarily a bad choice, but it is a distinctive one. While the one-take premise comes across as something of a gimmick, has some unlikely twists and perhaps a few production slip ups later in the runtime, Victoria still comes across as a solid thriller overall that has uses close proximity to the action and some decent character moments to get the audience involved. (3/5)

the one shot gimmick wasn't just a gimmick in the end - it made it really intense and helped with the suspension of disbelief needed for this kind of script

Wow, I decided two times against watching this movie due to mood reasons. But thank god I watched it now. Highly energetic movie, which looks amazing and the one-take is just so incredible. A story that takes some time in the beginning but in the high moments it's electrifying and intense as it gets. Frederick Lau and Laia Costa are amazing! Highly recommend this movie! A real surprise that kinda blew me away!

outstanding performances by the actors. the story seems a little unrealistic but it's told very nicely. being a one taker, which is technically very impressive, there are some moments where you can breathe inbetween the very intense dialogues and action sequences but the movie manages to immerse you into the story and pov of the protagonists. amazing movie with nice colors and good score

If you ever wondered how would ‘Bonnie & Clyde' type of movie look like if it was taken in contemporary Berlin, in a single continuous shot, look no further. This German heist thriller not only has a brilliant premise, but also the execution. It depicts events in the real time and actors are top notch, especially Laia Costa as a girl who gets involved in the heist with the guy she's attracted to. I was entertained, I was on the edge of my seat, I was tearing up… In the era of formulaic and unimaginative movies this one almost rises to a perfection. More than recommended.

Plot and character development is sacrificed for the impressive feat of doing a 2h15m movie in one take. However the story is so frustrating, that it becomes unbearable to watch.

The film was shot in a single long take, which is extremely impressive. This could have been a mediocre movie, but the German writer/director Sebastian Schipper really put a lot of work into this and it shows! If you watch the trailer and think you might like this movie, you'll definitely enjoy it.

Fantastisch in nur einer Einstellung gedreht und gespielt, die Kamera immer auf Höhe der Protagonisten. Man baut so eine unglaubliche Beziehung zu den Figuren auf. Tolle Story... Atemberaubend!

The story, location and the characters are astonishing. The crew (Camera and sound man in particular) did a fantastic job. However, I always did ask this question to myself when watching; "was it really imperative to shoot the entire movie in one take? Or is it just the desire to achieve something that has never been done before? I am not sure. I think, such one-take shots can be suitable for long action scenes no more than that. To concentrate on The entire film for 135 mins was exhausting.

It's a good film but once you get past the one-take as a technical feat, all it really does is interfere with the pacing. Several scenes are ridiculously overlong and at well over two hours some serious editing is needed.

One of a kind. One of the best cinematography I have ever seen.

I had a lot of trouble finding the cut which is a great thing in a movie trying to be a single shot. Some cases of shadows and reflections lose the illusion. For moments it is difficult to emphasize since characters make dumb decisions. When it works it is really engaging
