Brent A Cronenberg Masterpiece Rated 5/5 Stars •  Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/22 Full Review Lenny C We are plunged into the world of the 1980s and surrounded by the technology of the time. The story is told through the eyes of Max Renn, played by James Woods, as he descends into madness, fluctuating between realistic and surreal scenes. Throughout the film, the characters are filmed in close-ups on their faces, creating a void around their environment and accentuating our immersion in their lives. David Cronenberg brings technology to life, such as cathode-ray tube televisions and VHS tapes, making them seem breathing and made of human flesh, thanks to impressive special effects. He takes us into an eccentric story, blurring the line between dream and reality, where the main character is absorbed by a television and where it manipulates him. After more than 40 years, Videodrome is strangely still relevant. David Cronenberg warns us against the too-easy access to pornography and torture by showing the potential consequences they can have on our behavior. Screen addiction is a growing problem. And the media and their politicized discourse still have an outsized influence on their audience despite all the alarming novels on this subject. These themes are explicitly addressed through Max's surreal scenes and hallucinations. This movie is a work of genius so far ahead of its time it took the world 40 years to catch up. When you watch this movie, just consider this - how many screens are you tapped into each day? How many videos do you watch? How many online monikers do you have? How much of this is real and how much of your impression of it all is simply hallucination and imaginings connected to things said by people on a screen?
