War Pony Reviews
I thought this was a very worthwhile movie to experience. It's sad how many native Americans are forced to live. It's worth the watch.
The soundtrack was lit
Very sensitive depiction of life in the Rez but also the coming of age for Matho. I've read it was totally scripted but it feels very natural and seems improvised. Nice going to everyone involved.
This movie is good, great realisation and we can really see the emotions of the characters through the screen.
Really stellar. Acting is genuine and wonderful all around. This film somehow manages to merge a slice-of-life style indie with a satisfying, full-circle plot. It's exceptionally skilled at showing, not telling. Tension abounds, comments on society abound, perspectives on masculinity abound, and yet, nary a word on any are ever spoken. Masterful, and on the level with any intellectual indie.
The movie is pointless. It tries to show how hard life is on Native American reservations, but shows Native Americans as unwilling to improve their situation and preying on each other. There is no hope, there is nothing inspiring, it doesn't help the viewer to understand the plight of Native Americans who deserve much better. The end tries to inspire some hope but it is so random and still manages to depict Native Americans negatively. The only highlight is Redbone's classic song Come and Get Your Love. There are much better movies about life on Native American reservations like Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee and Wind River.
Sad to see what's happened to indigenous people and people of colour throughout Amerikkka, weather they are First Nations, African Americans, Mexican Hispanics and or Latinos. Sacred Lands have been overrun and desecrated by the white man, indeed ALL of the land belongs and belonged to the First Nations peoples, and its interesting to see how Hip-Hop, RAP, and Munblecore Trap subcultures has filtered into these communities, as well as a certain despair, desperation, and loss of culture while still being embedded within their culture, one can still feel the immense loss and grief the people are burdenned with like a millstone around the necks. What we see in this film feels authentic, modern and up-to-date in showing the current life situations, behaviours and attitudes of families, parents, kids and especially the teenagers who are trying to find themselves in the midst of this confusing, broken down lifestyle that they have unwittingly inherited in the aftermath of a long, virtually silent historical genocide of their peoples, lands, traditionalism, beliefs, customs and lifestyle. Thevancient ways are nearly all lost, and have given way to drugs, alcohol, domestic violence, broken relationships, and lives that seem to drift along meaninglessly until someone either dies or ends up incarcerated, or both. Reservation life is no joke and its no 'American Dream' either. Stick with the film to the end, think on it, oonder over it, discuss it, see it again. Love it or hate it, its not a film to be ignored, regardless of weather you feel drawn to it or repelled by it. Put your personal views, opinions and judgments aside and watch it with an open mind, its guaranteed to stay with you days afterwards.
Great! Really superb acting.
This movie was spot on. They just got some kids from the Rez and put them in a movie lol and they fucking killed it. I love this movie.
Very beautiful movie that, as far as I know, shows a realistic view of reservation life. It's not an easy life and I think it's important for people to understand that. I especially appreciated the interactions between the main characters and the white people-- these interactions provided a personal glimpse of the issues that deeply affect Indigenous peoples.
Riley Keough a terrific actress has made a solid and impressive directing debut with co-director Gina Gammell. I loved their simple and naturalistic directing style. This authentic tale of two lost Lakota boys was done in the style of the neorealist films that I love; De Sica, Rossellini, and currently the Dardenne Brothers. With fine and subtle performances from the non-professional actors. Its realistic tone felt improvised, which it wasn't. "War Pony" is a slice of life drama more than it is a strong narrative. The loose structure meanders at times, but it was the poetic tone and beautifully photographed surroundings that kept me engaged. Loved the score too! Keough and Gammel show promise as first-time filmmakers. I look forward to seeing what they will do next.
The oppression and impacts of a culture forced on people to live in a world that is so far removed from their traditional life ways is one of our country's greatest injustices. This film shines a hard light on the reality Natives have to live every day, and should make anyone who sees it think twice about how society has treated - and continues to treat them. It's a great movie with powerful acting.
I loved this movie, kept me locked in the whole time and the ending was my favorite!! Soundtrack was really good as well.
I mean its a slow, slow, slow burn ... that never really comes to a climax
Well done. Good acting, good editing. Stories of 2 different people living on a reservation was well written. Also enjoyed the occasional humor.
Loved it. Indigenous representation matters.
