What Josiah Saw Reviews

Jan 16, 2025

Another really slow burning movie where nothing really happens and that does not keep your attention. Found this very dull, slow paced and kept waiting for somthing interesting to happen. Lots of creepy music but nothing scary or supernatural about it at all. Really disappointed and would not watch again.

A slow burn that at times dragged on. The payoff at the end was worth it and left me with questions (in a good way).

What Josiah Saw is a dark, brooding, and gripping film. Underpinned by outstanding performances from Robert Patrick, Nick Stahl, Kelli Garner and Scott Haze, it's nearly 4 stories in one, the first 3 focusing on the 3 children, then culminating in one final act with the whole family. It may be a bit of a slow burn for some, but the ever building sense of dread keeps you hooked right to the stunning ending, and the end is well worth waiting for.

A well-crafted, brilliantly thought-out portrayal of trauma and grief, and how the associated memories, pain, and scarring impact on members of the same family in different, sometimes horrific ways. This would have been exceptionally well written if it wasn’t for the use of chapters as a means of structuring the story and its narrative. They don‘t flow well with the overarching story, so cause breaks in both focus and rhythm, which reduce the built-up tension and anticipation at each punctuation. RP and NS perform scarily well together, which is what delivers the most tension and suspense throughout the film, with each thread to the story coming together at the end, where the drama and horror reach their crescendo. A brilliant horror for fans of great acting, brilliant directing, and perfectly matched cinematography

"What Josiah Saw" is a well-constructed and mature family drama that brilliantly depicts the scars that traumas can leave. The story's development and suspense are solidly built, with strong performances that give each character deep psychological substance.

This one will throw you for a total loop... Soooo unexpected and guessing the whole time. A little slow to start but well worth the wait once you see the ending through.

Total rubbish. Total waste of time watching it.

This was a pretty pointless and way-too-slo-burn movie that just felt like a big waste of time.

Please, families, don't live too far away from other people. This is what happens when you don't get into town enough.

Just when you think you know what's going on, you don't.

Masterful storytelling, spectacular performances, and an overwhelming atmosphere of dread make What Josiah Saw brilliantly agonizing psychological horror.

A film that came and went will little fanfare, possibly because it came out in 2021, a year when we were still struggling to recover from the knockout blow of COVID, What Josiah Saw is an incredibly well-made and acted film about revenge and the sins of the family. It's got uniformly great performances from all involved with Robert Patrick being an especial standout. I liked how the film was all about showing and not telling. We don't need long scenes of exposition, we don't need outsiders discussing the family, throwing around rumours or hearsay that inevitably turn out to be true. The family members spend time together, argue, exchange terse dialogue and through this we discover what we need to know about them. Some of the dialogue, particularly from Thomas, is very hard to make out, due to it being spoken through tight lips in a heavy southern accent. Parts of it are confusing and even feel pointless, and with the slow pacing and odd directorial style, I can see it putting a lot of people off. But for me it was done to give the film an anguished, gritty feel, the sensation that these emotion have been festering for years and are now sneaking to the surface. When the characters all come together it feels like its been decades in the making, and it's great that the actors toned down their performances rather than cranking them up so we can feel their inner anguish. It's not a film I'd return to in a hurry, especially without subtitles, but for a single viewing, it was more than worth it.

A little too slow and drawn out for my taste, but if you like slow burn, have at it!

Achei lento até demais. A lentidão me descontentou do filme varias vezes. Na metade eu tinha ate esquecido que filme tava vendo, parece ter 3 filmes em 1. O final é muito bom. As qualidades técnicas são boas, destaque tbm para as atuações excelentes.

Overall, brutal, disturbing, tense, and deeply horrifying are just some of the words to best describe this film, and you know what? I thoroughly enjoyed it. It exceeded my expectations. It's a film that begins slow and perhaps carries a vague plot at first. But if viewers can stick with it, I feel the reward is a great one. Granted, this film isn't for the faint-hearted, but the level of suspense and unsettling tones, not to mention the multiple twists in the third act, left me feeling quite shocked, surprised, and so pleased that I instantly started a rewatch. Performances displayed here are executed with perfection, and its dark and gritty visuals wonderfully suit all that is on show. There's not much to fault here, so I'll just say if you are reading this review, I dare you to witness this horrifying film packed with family tragedies, secrets and sins.

A movie about a troubled and dysfunctional family struggling to redeem from its past sins. Only recommended to patient viewers. The last 15 minutes are truly disturbing!

Couldn't finish it. Perhaps you have to be American to appreciate this. The score is annoyingly distracting, building without any payoff constantly. 40 minutes in the film still has no direction and I couldn't be bothered to finish.

A decent little horror flick

What Josiah Saw is a painstakingly slow drama and offers nothing to make up for it. The story and characters are far from outstanding or unique, and the ending raises more questions than answers.
