Wicked Little Letters Reviews
...a mostly by-the-numbers endeavor that would undoubtedly feel right at home on PBS...
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Dec 7, 2024
If profanity doesn't bother you, 'Wicked Little Letters' is tawdry period comedy at its most delightful, re-teaming Olivia Cole and Jessie Buckley - who were so memorable in 'The Lost Daughter' (2021). It's absurdly scandalous!
| Original Score: 7/10 | Aug 29, 2024
Wicked Little Letters loses a certain amount of strength as it goes along, through no fault of Colman, Spall, Buckley, Atkins .... It loses force in proportion to the filmmakers’ attempt to turn the work into a critique of patriarchy and misogyny.

There’s not much to its predictable central mystery, but its strong cast and its sense of humor helps director Thea Sharrock’s film become an enjoyable diversion.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Aug 14, 2024
Thea Sharrock’s Wicked Little Letters is easily one of the best British comedies in recent years, with consistent laughs and wonderful performances from its cast.

While Wicked Little Letters will scratch the itch for some, it feels like a hollow experience. Despite an extraordinary cast, it cannot rise above “fine.” Unfortunately, that’s a disappointing outcome for this flick.

At times it's broadly satiric, even silly… and then it dips into gut-wrenching melodrama as it examines the plight of the wrongly-accused Rose. The two attitudes are never reconciled.
| Original Score: B- | Aug 2, 2024
Wicked Little Letters is not without its moments of pleasure and levity. Yet it never makes good on the promise of pitting Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley against each other.

This film benefits greatly from three separate storylines that all converge together with three equally fantastic female protagonists.

There’s comic value in hearing the prim and proper Edith read aloud the offending letters, but the proceedings also incorporate many poignant moments.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jul 22, 2024
Wicked Little Letters” works as light entertainment for several reasons: the art direction ... the funny letters ... and Colman’s amusingly over-the-top work. ... Best of all, though, is Buckley, whose rebellious Rose is just a joy to behold.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jul 21, 2024
It’s a compelling commentary that makes its case fairly well through engagingly playful performances and solid use of camerawork.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 19, 2024
This is the type of film that Britain excels at, films with a stern point about class, gender and a time and place. Yet one not above fart jokes, slapstick humour and the utter joy of hearing Olivia Colman scream the C-word.

I haven’t had this much foul-mouthed fun since HBO’s “Veep.”

Though the film never entirely lives up to its full promise, it delights nonetheless and features divine performances from both its stars and the rest of the impressive Brit-pack ensemble.

If you're a fan of Colman and Buckley (and you should be), there are plenty of reasons to make time for this, especially since they have such a wonderful, combative rapport that is sometimes sad but mostly hilarious.

Wicked Little Letters is a riot, guaranteed to amuse viewers. Thus, it is ideal as that Friday night film that is perfectly placed as a light-hearted dramedy

{The movie} is a good reason to watch and appreciate the lead performers, Colman and Buckley, who bring different types of intensity to the disparate roles — Colman’s Edith as the repressed do-gooder, and Buckley as the unfiltered survivor.

WICKED LITTLE LETTERS is hysterical. The way Olivia Colman reacts to the vulgar things being said about her in those early scenes is worth the price of admission alone.

It's a comedy of manners, whose broad humor never connected with me.
