Willard Reviews
Morgan's camera work is more sure-footed than his screenplay.

Terrifying and violent horror movie. Rats -- EWW.

[Y]ou got a real opportunity here to do something really funny -- because Crispin Glover is really fun -- and something scary, but the rats, I guess, aren't up to the task.

In a culture clogged with appropriated effluvia and remake cop-outs, Willard is wittier and nastier than we deserve.

The casting of cult actor Crispin Hellion Glover as Willard Stiles ... is by far the best casting choice in a major American film since Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman redesigned John Malkovich.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 16, 2003
The movie keeps it close, clammy and simple, the better to focus on what is unquestionably this little thriller's strongest point: The tragic love between a boy and his rodent.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 14, 2003
A silly, snarling romp.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 14, 2003
What elevates this nouveau Willard above similar restorations of used pulp is the way it sustains the original's queasy menace while applying neatly stylized layers of grit and wit.

If you've ever heard gnawing in your attic, Willard will creep you out.

At least Morgan knows the smartest thing he can do is just let Glover go nuts.

[Glover] is fascinatingly, compellingly weird.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 14, 2003
Even if it were the pits, who in his right mind would pass up an opportunity to see Crispin Glover coo and canoodle with rats?

Not very stylish and not very scary.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 14, 2003
Qualifies as a guilty pleasure where you can debate afterwards what's more creepy: Glover's Willard, who is often shown in excruciating closeup, or his murderously swarming pals.

It has attitude and a look, but the rats aren't scary.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Mar 14, 2003
This is a one-riff movie and instant cult classic.

An uneasy mix of effective dark comedy and stomach-churning special effects.

It is unlikely that there will ever be a better horror movie about the relationship of a repressed young man to his ravenous rats.

The movie isn't without style, but the material can't remotely sustain 100 minutes.
