Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (LAist) The question is interesting -- the way [this film] looks at it is not. Apr 12, 2019 Full Review MaryAnn Johanson Flick Filosopher Plays with its let's-clone-a-Neanderthal plot like it has no idea of the horrors involved and no appreciation of the ethical questions it raises. Pierre C Honestly one of the most brilliant movies I have ever watched! Full of very deep, far-reaching considerations regarding mankind's very nature and that of the individual per se, and mostly scientifically accurate! A deeply -- all puns aside -- human movie. Great to watch at all degrees of the conveyed meaning of the film. The acting was excellent, the performance of Will Brittain/Connor+Brody Wilkinson/Christian Convery as a neanderthal is very convincing. The acting by Waleed Zuater and Maria Dizzia as the scientific power then estranged couple too, as well as that of all other actors! (spoiler alert below) The very idea that Neanderthal was our intellectual equal (William speaks flawlessly, completes high-school and would have made it to uni) and very capable of abstract thought (metaphors, puns etc) but does not depend on it to define himself as opposed to sapiens who built his entire civilisation around it (sometimes ou of weakness), as a binding element is very appealing and largely supported by scientific evidence (they lived in groups of 10-50, sometimes larger, and came across each other every now and then). The whole idea shows man can live in balance with nature, as e.g. native americans did (and shows that given that they had similar group sizes, that they likely needed to develop a language). The parallel does not stop there since sapiens drove them to extinction as we came out of Africa and invaded Europe... Very bleak reflection of us as a species. I also particularly liked how the movie portrayed William as a different child and human, but still human, and how rejection leads to dramatic consequences. Far-reaching too. In any case, well done! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/14/25 Full Review Audience Member It's about you, it's about me, and anyone "forced into a habitat that is less favorable" (which includes every human being on earth). It's about evolution as it is happening, at the personal level, in our civilization. It's the story of what mankind does to its individuals, and what it means to realize that "this is who I am." The movie cleverly exposes the partial nature of our perception of ourselves and of the group that (we think) we belong to, from the other's point of view - a perception that is as hypocritical as William's father. The movie is enlightening, ingenious. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member " I feel like I have been forced into a less-advantageous habitat by your superior numbers" - This line sums it up for me. Great watch, if you feel out of place with people, you can relate strongly with the movie. I did. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member The subject was a gigantic undertaking - and it didn't quite do what it set out to do. But an interesting premise - and Will Britain did well... Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member It's based on a great theme. This movie could've been a masterpiece but it lacks the depth of the story and failure of development. Although the main cast did a superb job, some of the extras were horrible. The cinematography and opening score was pretty good. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Callum was great tho Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
