Mark K Within the Woods of Undead County is worth watching for the gorgeous cinematography and the quietly devastating ending, but I wanted more character development, especially at the beginning. Four people flee into the woods to escape the zombie apocalypse, and although they are somewhat distinct types, the director makes little attempt to thresh them out as individuals. When he tries to create sympathy for them in tragic moments, the sudden humanity feels heavy-handed and even a bit funny. Nevertheless, the ending gave me a sinking, sad feeling. Weirdly, the ending almost feels existential, which I like, but I think the effect is accidental. It's like cliched dialog causes the characters to feel hollow and 2-dimensional, and then the ending is structured in a way that feels like a continuation of the hollowness, and it affected me. I'd be curious to know if anyone else felt this. As I think about it, I wonder if the ending kind of got to me because the director is striving for a human-level story about people. I mean, the script needs work, but it mainly avoids over-the-top reactions. The kills aren't flashy, but the zombies are solid. There's almost something down-to-earth and realistic about how things play out, but it won't appeal to viewers who want their zombie flicks to be super 'cool.' In addition to brilliant cinematography, the sound production is stunning, though it seems like they redubbed the entire movie in a studio after filming. For me, 3 out of 5 is a good score. It means I think a movie is worth watching--there's enough good that it's not a waste of time, especially for a low-budget, independent film--but I won't mention it automatically if someone asks for a recommendation. There's a ton of good in this film. With a better script, I would gladly give it a higher score. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
