Withnail and I Reviews

Apr 25, 2025

A terrifyingly good movie. Brilliantly scripted and superbly acted - this is a must watch for any University Student. It's become a cult classic in recent years and it holds the dubious accolade of being the only movie I have worn out the VHS tape playing to the point of needing to buy it again.

Top-notch film. An absolute riot. From an era where cinema was theatre brought to screen. Wonderfully acted tale of two young struggling actors wasting away in downtown London in the 1960s who seek solace in the English countryside and find themselves befuddled and inspired by the struggles and adventures of rural life. Full of humor, intelligent and witty dialogue, and whimsical wonder.

An ok film, rather slow and bit boring by modern standards, characters are very one dimensional and typical london student types, there is no overarching meaning to be taken from the very simple story. Good acting but not hard roles.

Not one single piece of dialogue is wasted. Every line is a quote. I first saw this film thirty years ago and it remains a masterpiece.

Having read how hilarious the film is I have wasted time in seeing it until now 2024 but after 65 minutes I have not laughed once. I find it so far a cringe and although Mcgann is good Grants performance is so ott and painful. Should have rented or missed completely but alas I wasted £6 buying something I will never ever ever watch again

Pretty brilliant casting and character development on the way through their urban & rural trials. Plus Richard Starkey, OBE !

Like a stream-of-consciousness art project. Entertaining, but not especially memorable.

The last secne where Withnail plays the adaptation from Hamlet towards the animals was incredible and sad.

A comedy masterpiece with a towering central performance from Grant who is ably supported by Paul McGann and a fine ensemble cast. It's humour is distinctly not for everyine but if you get it then you'll simply adore the bones of it. For me, it started a deep dive into Richard E. Grants body of work and my appreciation of what a wonderful actor he can be in the right roles. His movies may not all be great but he's nearly always great in them.

Hilarious and endlessly quotable, however it's homophobic ending depicting the gay uncle as a predator hasn't aged well. You can ignore this by interpreting that Withnail and Marwood are gay lovers all along.

Not my cup of tea. Overacted, overwrought, silly (but not British witty--just low-budget cheaply made awkward movie kind of silly). Supposed to be profound? I found it tedious--can't believe it's a popular cult film.

A near perfect portrait of a slice in time. Relatable, realistic characters. Every line of dialogue hilarious. A timeless masterpiece.

Set in late 1960s and filmed in late 80s. Uniquely British dry comedy. Feel like watching a play with witty dialog and acting style. and interestingly it's not boring. Produced by legendary HandMade Films.

It's difficult to understand the widespread love that seems to exist for Withnail and I. Withnail (Richard E. Grant) is a struggling actor, fueled by alcohol, drugs and an over-inflated sense of his own talent. Marwood (Paul McGann), also an actor, is a glass-half-empty hypochondriac. To escape their squalid London flat, they head to the country for a weekend at Withnail's uncle's cottage. Predictably, country life proves more complex than expected, resulting in equally predictable hijinks. Other than a couple of decent laughs, it's all pretty drab thanks to the facts that neither of the main characters seem to have much in the way of redeeming values and a script that's filled with trite, unrealistic dialogue. The only scenes that really shine are the ones involving their friend Danny (Ralph Brown), a sage-like stoner who spouts obtuse wisdom at the drop of a dime. It's too bad that Marwood and Withnail weren't dispensed with and the focus put on the adventures of Danny.

'as a boy, I used to weep in butchers shops' A fabulous, British, eccentric movie!

What absolute twaddle!! 😂😂😂😉😉😉

I don't really need to explain why this is brilliant i'm sure, but having watched it recently, it is incredible at how funny Withnail & I remains today, 34 years on. Richard E Grant's portrayal of the drunken Withnail is still his career best, although it's worth nudging you in the direction of his recent performance in Can You Ever Forgive Me (2018) which could be a distant relation to Withnail.

I discovered this absolute gem a few years ago and have now watched it at least 10 times. Everything from the writing and performances to the set design and music are pitch perfect and immersive. I immediately feel for Marwood and Withnail, wishing them out of their circumstances into success. Danny and Monty and the Farmer are so specific. This is the definitive dark comedy, and a love letter to the dingy London theatre scene.
