Biography:

I'm a Toronto-based film writer and critic focused on horror, fantasy, and sci-fi genres. I founded www.viewfromthedark.ca, where I deep dive into race and representation of people of color in genre film, or lack thereof. I'm also a film programmer for the Blood in the Snow Canadian Film Festival, and a contributing author to the first edition of the Women in Horror Annual, The Encyclopedia of Japanese Horror Films (Rowman & Littlefield), and the Encyclopedia of Racism in American Films (Rowman & Littlefield). You can find other pieces I've written on diversity and women in sci-fi on www.graveyardshiftsisters.com, and film reviews on www.cinemaaxis.com, the Rue Morgue blog and print magazine, and Hollywood Suite. You can also hear me on Reely Melanated, a podcast I co-host where we discuss films we love.

Longlegs (2024) 86% 3.5/5 “Longlegs is a creepy, thrilling serial killer story with gorgeous cinematography, a great performance by Monroe, and bone-chilling sound design. However, the pieces don’t always fit as they should.” – Cinema Axis Jul 24, 2024 Full Review Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power (2022) 70% 4/5 “The learning experience watching Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power is truly incredible. It’s needed, brilliant, and breaks down the whys and hows of gendered visual language in a simple, gut-punching way.” – View From The Dark Feb 8, 2023 Full Review Knock at the Cabin (2023) 67% 2.5/5 “If you've read the book, you'll feel something's missing when you see the cinematic version. If you're a fan of Shyamalan and not interested in the novel, you'll enjoy a tense thriller that briefly looks at societal fears and highlights Bautista's range.” – View From The Dark Feb 8, 2023 Full Review Infinity Pool (2023) 87% 4/5 “Brandon Cronenberg’s latest Infinity Pool, his third feature film after Antiviral and Possessor, brings us a disturbing, yet beautifully grotesque psychological/body-horror/sci-fi mash-up.” – View From The Dark Feb 2, 2023 Full Review Bones and All (2022) 82% 4/5 “Young love often appears in the cinema as tender, idealistic and bittersweet, but rarely terrifies and goes against the grain. In Bones and All, two young people brought together by their taste for human flesh hit all these notes in the best way possible.” – View From The Dark Jan 18, 2023 Full Review The Inspection (2022) 88% 4/5 “Bratton's vulnerability and strength to tell his own story in The Inspection will hopefully open the door for new, underrepresented voices to tell theirs, inspiring those who feel alone in situations where their LGBTQ+ identities aren’t accepted.” – View From The Dark Jan 18, 2023 Full Review She Paradise (2020) 88% 4/5 “Director Maya Cozier's first film is simple in its premise-a coming of age story-but she also incorporates a complex set of conditions growing up as a Black Caribbean woman.” – View From The Dark Dec 5, 2021 Full Review Halloween Kills (2021) 39% 2/5 “With a clumsy mob mentality/morality play as a backdrop that may or may not reflect current world events, Halloween Kills is a means to an end (I hope).” – View From The Dark Oct 18, 2021 Full Review Knocking (2021) 80% 3/5 “I'd check out Knocking for Miloccco's inspired performance, subtle score, great sound design, and gorgeous cinematography that uses warm hues to show a feverish spiral of one woman among skeptics.” – View From The Dark Oct 10, 2021 Full Review To Kill the Beast (2021) 100% 3.5/5 “Agustina San Martin mesmerizes with unknown dangers and the power of one girl's self-discovery.” – View From The Dark Sep 15, 2021 Full Review You Are Not My Mother (2021) 88% 5/5 “You'll enjoy immersing yourself in the dark fairy tale that laces family drama with loads of horror and folklore.” – View From The Dark Sep 15, 2021 Full Review Encounter (2021) 55% 2.5/5 “I guess with Encounter, you can expect the expected. It's a bit of a disappointment, but you can't beat the soulful eyes of Riz Ahmed, who can carry an audience through anything, even an alien threat.” – View From The Dark Sep 14, 2021 Full Review The Middle Man (2021) 74% 3/5 “Despite Karmack being hard to place as an Anytown, USA, the performances were quite good, with Gross and Hagen stealing the show” – View From The Dark Sep 14, 2021 Full Review DASHCAM (2021) 47% 1/5 “Some of DASHCAM's camera work was good to give a sense of panic, and I liked the effects, but overall, some of the action didn't make sense, and I found Hardy to be the most obnoxious character I've seen recently. She was just too much.” – View From The Dark Sep 14, 2021 Full Review Attica (2021) 100% 5/5 “Attica will make you think about who the real criminals are in society.” – View From The Dark Sep 14, 2021 Full Review The Gravedigger's Wife (2021) 96% 5/5 “Khadar Ayderus Ahmed's first feature film is a triumph of rock-solid love and charm.” – View From The Dark Sep 14, 2021 Full Review Good Madam (2021) 84% 4/5 “Bass does an excellent job of illustrating the trauma of South Africa's past using the genre she loves” – View From The Dark Sep 14, 2021 Full Review Night Raiders (2021) 83% 5/5 “'m really surprised that Night Raiders is Goulet's first feature since the film is sure of itself, melding action, strong women characters, genre and a deeply important story.” – View From The Dark Sep 14, 2021 Full Review We Need to Do Something (2021) 54% 2.5/5 “The cast of We Need to Do Something really worked with the small space and fed off of each other like a true family on the brink, but I was left wanting more despite the great tension of the film” – View From The Dark Sep 7, 2021 Full Review Candyman (2021) 84% 4/5 “There's no mistaking that 2021's Candyman will never overshadow what Tony Todd did as the first black slasher. However, DaCosta has created a piece that takes the parts of what was good and what was missing, reinterpreting it all into something new.” – View From The Dark Aug 26, 2021 Full Review Blood Conscious (2021) 80% 3.5/5 “Blood Conscious is ambitious, intriguing and tense, and explores the "what-ifs" within the context of race.” – View From The Dark Aug 26, 2021 Full Review My Heart Can't Beat Unless You Tell It To (2020) 98% 4/5 “Jonathan Cuartas's debut feature My Heart Can't Beat Unless You Tell It To cuts deep into a world of family ties, classic lore and sacrifice.” – View From The Dark Jun 27, 2021 Full Review Sound of Violence (2021) 64% 3.5/5 “Investing in women characters is sadly still a gamble in the cinematic universe, and within the horror genre, it can be hard to get it right. Noyer succeeds in Sound of Violence by leaving the male gaze in the dust.” – View From The Dark Jun 22, 2021 Full Review Shapeless (2021) 75% 3/5 “Director Samantha Aldana shows us the monstrous side of body dysmorphia and eating disorders in her debut feature Shapeless.” – View From The Dark Jun 16, 2021 Full Review Ultrasound (2021) 77% 4/5 “Audiences can expect the unexpected with Rob Schroeder's directorial debut, Ultrasound.” – View From The Dark Jun 16, 2021 Full Review
