Flags of Our Fathers (2006) 76% “Eastwood strips away the phoniness of myth-making to discover the harsh, uncomfortable realities beneath. His film is hugely emotional about the experience of warfare, but it is also balanced and rational.” – Daily Mail (UK) Nov 10, 2023 Full Review Goodfellas (1990) 94% “Scorsese constantly reveals the skull behind the smile. Seldom has violence been portrayed less glamorously or with more moral effectiveness. ” – Sunday Telegraph (UK) Oct 18, 2023 Full Review Betsy's Wedding (1990) 56% “There's a good pace, funny one-liners and enjoyable performances from the ubiquitous Joe Pesci as a sleazy uncle, Ally Sheedy as a vulnerable woman cop, and -- best of all -- Anthony LaPaglia as an earnest, Runyonesque young Mafioso.” – Sunday Telegraph (UK) Oct 17, 2023 Full Review A Shock to the System (1990) 70% “Elizabeth McGovern is so charming as Caine's lover that the ending becomes unintentionally disconcerting, if not downright disappointing. But there are many worse ways of spending 90 minutes. ” – Sunday Telegraph (UK) Oct 17, 2023 Full Review Korczak (1990) “A film which is often heavy-handed and flat-footed in its naturalism but always has its heart in the right place: like a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical without the music. ” – Sunday Telegraph (UK) Oct 17, 2023 Full Review The Land Before Time (1988) 65% “The problem is the screenplay, which is no great Earthshakes at all. It tramples that thin line between honest sentiment and schmaltz in a way that is both formulaic and dinosnore-worthy.” – Daily Telegraph (UK) Aug 18, 2022 Full Review All Stars (2013) 43% 2/5 “All Stars is never boring, but it's too naive for this world.” – Daily Mail (UK) May 7, 2020 Full Review Step Brothers (2008) 54% 1/5 “They're just a freak show, an excuse to give us such 'gags' as Reilly emitting the longest and noisiest fart in screen history, and Ferrell exposing his scrotum and wiping it over Reilly's drum kit.” – Daily Mail (UK) Mar 30, 2019 Full Review The Adventures of Tintin (2011) 75% 3/5 “I was hoping to be thrilled, and I wasn't. All the film delivers is a somewhat inhuman pastiche.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jan 4, 2018 Full Review The Ides of March (2011) 84% 5/5 “For my money, The Ides Of March -- with its dark view of human nature and satisfyingly twisty plot -- is one of the most entertaining films ever made about the political process.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jan 4, 2018 Full Review The Help (2011) 76% 3/5 “Hokey, but a hit.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jan 4, 2018 Full Review The Devil's Double (2011) 54% 2/5 “This is an over-the-top gangster flick that starts with the volume turned up to 11 and stays that way. It's never boring, but revels in the bad behaviour it pretends to condemn, and is too much on one note to be much good.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jan 4, 2018 Full Review Jackboots on Whitehall (2010) 44% “Pointless, puerile and a shameful shambles.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jan 4, 2018 Full Review The Social Network (2010) 96% 5/5 “It is director David Fincher's equivalent of Orson Welles' Citizen Kane: the story of a capitalist who is awe-inspiring in some ways, but tragic in others; enviably clever and driven, but also repellently ruthless and treacherous.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jan 4, 2018 Full Review A Town Called Panic (2009) 81% 2/5 “A little goes a very long way, and even at 75 minutes it ends up feeling silly and self-indulgent.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jan 4, 2018 Full Review The Kid (2010) 50% 2/5 “It's so unsubtle in its characterisation and so plodding in its narrative that it's unlikely to reach much of an audience.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jan 4, 2018 Full Review Toy Story 3 (2010) 98% 5/5 “It's not the usual Hollywood conveyor-belt product. Made with love and intelligence, this adventure has enough thrills, laughs and emotion to satisfy any adult or child.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jan 4, 2018 Full Review White Material (2009) 86% 2/5 “Unfortunately, the screenplay is awful. It gives away the ending early on, which removes any suspense, and pointlessly plays with time so that it's hard to know what is happening when, let alone why.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jan 4, 2018 Full Review Good Hair (2009) 94% 3/5 “It raises interesting issues of image, self-esteem and social pressures, and Rock turns out to be an engaging interviewer.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jan 4, 2018 Full Review Tetro (2009) 71% 1/5 “Tetro means "gloomy" in Italian, and sitting through this film is depressing indeed.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jan 4, 2018 Full Review Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002) 61% “It's the sheer scale of the storytelling that makes this episode superior to its immediate predecessor, and then of course there's the look of the movie. The production design is superb, with a real sense of cinematic wonder.” – Daily Mail (UK) Nov 16, 2015 Full Review Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005) 79% “For all the hype, I fear this is a film that only the most uncritical Star Wars fans will truly enjoy.” – Daily Mail (UK) Nov 16, 2015 Full Review Finding Nemo (2003) 99% “Artistically, it's up there with the all-time animated greats.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jul 29, 2015 Full Review Daredevil (2003) 43% “Writer-director Mark Steven Johnson's movie is too heavily reliant on tried and tested ingredients, such as Batman-type design and Matrix-style fighting.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jul 14, 2015 Full Review Spider-Man (2002) 90% “Here is the best of the superhero films to have emerged from Hollywood.” – Daily Mail (UK) Jul 7, 2015 Full Review
