Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) 54% 3.5/4 “...there are the breathtaking sets, creatures, robots and spacecraft, as well as the fascination of meeting the ancestors of the characters we know so well a generation earlier.” – sbs.com.au Apr 16, 2025 Full Review American Psycho (2000) 68% 3.5/5 “A very fine performance by Christian Bale distinguishes this vicious satire on Reagan-era greed and yuppiedom, in a visually rich film which is often surprisingly funny, in a Kafka-ish kind of way. ” – sbs.com.au Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Tarzan (1999) 90% 4.5/5 “I know Disney inevitably takes a superficial approach to the material; but when the animation is as rich and 3-dimensional as it is here I really don't care.” – At the Movies (Australia) Dec 20, 2024 Full Review Mulan (1998) 92% 4.5/5 “Mulan will undoubtedly have its critics, but it represents Disney animation at its best.” – At the Movies (Australia) Dec 20, 2024 Full Review Planet of the Apes (2001) 43% 3/5 “There are flashes of humour, the occasional funny line, and an excellent uncredited cameo -- plus a different surprise ending from the conclusion the first time around. But it all adds up to surprisingly little.” – At the Movies (Australia) Apr 30, 2024 Full Review Amélie (2001) 90% 4.5/5 “With the talented Audrey Tautou in the leading role, Amelie is sheer delight, and will entrance everyone who sees it.” – At the Movies (Australia) Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Brand Bollywood... Downunder (2023) 3/5 “Brand Bollywood Downunder is worth watching at the very least for its historical context.” – The Australian Feb 5, 2024 Full Review Samson & Delilah (2009) 95% “Anyone who cares about Australian cinema should see this film. I’d go further and suggest that anyone who cares about Australia should see it. Samson and Delilah is, quite simply, one of the finest films ever made in this country.” – The Australian Jan 3, 2024 Full Review Brokeback Mountain (2005) 88% “Ledger and Gyllenhaal deserve nothing but praise for their brave, sensitive portrayals of troubled souls...” – The Australian Jan 3, 2024 Full Review The Barbarian Invasions (2003) 81% “Arcand’s intelligent, witty, delicate film is a constant joy and for once the academy got it right — this foreign language film richly deserved its Oscar.” – The Australian Jan 3, 2024 Full Review Apocalypse Now Redux (1979) 93% 5/5 “The result is a different experience. The bulk of the film is still there, of course, but the characters are fleshed out in more detail.” – The Australian Jan 3, 2024 Full Review Coup de Chance (2023) 83% 4.5/5 “Coup de chance is the 50th film Allen has directed and one of his best. It was made in France and is, to all intents and purposes, a French movie.” – The Australian Dec 29, 2023 Full Review Atanarjuat the Fast Runner (2001) 93% 3.5/4 “It's way, way too long, and considerable editing would have made it more audience friendly. Still, once you get into the gentle rhythm of it, you're seduced by the exotic beauty of this rarely seen world.” – At the Movies (Australia) Nov 8, 2023 Full Review The Dive (2023) 67% 3/5 “Flashbacks while in the water to the often harsh treatment of the girls by their overbearing father are more intrusive than informative. In the end, The Dive is an admirable niche film for a limited audience.” – The Australian Nov 7, 2023 Full Review Foe (2023) 24% 3/5 “Overall, the film must be counted as a disappointment, though there are interesting elements to this futuristic drama.” – The Australian Nov 7, 2023 Full Review Lie with Me (2022) 97% 3.5/5 “It’s true that the basic theme – a character haunted by vivid memories of his first love that ended badly – isn’t exactly original, but when told as tenderly as it is here the material remains timeless.” – The Australian Oct 13, 2023 Full Review The Crime Is Mine (2023) 98% 4/5 “Ozon proves once again that he’s a master of sophisticated comedy laced with irony and drama. This is one of his most engaging films.” – The Australian Oct 13, 2023 Full Review The Cost (2023) 83% 2.5/5 “The Cost, a low budget Australian revenge thriller directed by Matthew Holmes, would be more effective if it were less brutal.” – The Australian Oct 6, 2023 Full Review Sick of Myself (2022) 88% 3.5/5 “In this era in which social media and the cult of celebrity are prone to combine, the Norwegian film Sick of Myself makes a considerable impression. ” – The Australian Oct 6, 2023 Full Review Cobweb (2023) 59% 3/5 “Jee-woon has made several other interesting films. His work here is manic, at times hysterical, and at other times hilarious.” – The Australian Oct 2, 2023 Full Review Ego: The Michael Gudinski Story (2023) 100% 3.5/5 “Gudinski comes across as an amiable, endlessly energetic and passionate man who loved not only the music but the musicians who created that music.” – The Australian Sep 8, 2023 Full Review My Sailor, My Love (2022) 90% 3.5/5 “Much of this film is appealing, with the three lead performances offering subtle insights into their complex characters.” – The Australian Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Past Lives (2023) 95% 4.5/5 “It is highly recommended as a touching and always subtle film about old memories, old friendships and contemporary realities.” – The Australian Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Biosphere (2022) 80% 2.5/5 “Though it’s stuffed full of interesting ideas Biosphere doesn’t really come together in a satisfying way, despite the engaging lead performances.” – The Australian Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Last Film Show (2021) 95% 4.5/5 “For those who love cinema this beautifully photographed and very well acted film will be a joy.” – The Australian Sep 8, 2023 Full Review
