Biography:
I belong to a small group of scholars who have juggled a dual career, as film professor (Ph.D. Columbia University) and film critic (Variety, Screen International, Financial Times). Among my eight (nine) film books are All About Oscar: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards, George Cukor, Master of Elegance, Cinema of Outsiders: The Rise of American Independent Film, and the first biography of Vincente Minnelli, Hollywood's Dark Dreamer.
My latest book, Gay Directors, Gay Films, focuses on the queer gaze of Almodovar, Terence Davis, Todd Haynes, Gus Van Sant, John Waters,
I have served on the jury of 44 (69) international Film Festivals, including Cannes, Venice, Taoromina, Roma, Montreal, Hawaii, San Francisco, Toronto, OutFest, and Sundance.
