The Friend (2024) 84% 3.5/4 “There’s a sweetness to The Friend that is rare in cinema today. There’s no cynicism in McGehee and Siegel’s version of the story, nor is there any malice. ” – Observer Mar 24, 2025 Full Review Mickey 17 (2025) 77% 3/4 “Mickey 17 is a remarkably solid and compelling sci-fi flick, with an absurdist flair that can only come from a filmmaker like Joon Ho. ” – Observer Mar 5, 2025 Full Review Seven Veils (2023) 77% 3/4 “Amanda Seyfried gives a dynamic, complex performance as an opera director grappling with trauma in her past and present. ” – Observer Mar 4, 2025 Full Review Cleaner (2025) 50% 1/4 “Ridley is a talented actress who's proven her skill with action in three 'Star Wars' movies. But she's wasted in this muddled thriller. ” – Observer Feb 18, 2025 Full Review The Gorge (2025) 63% 2.5/4 “Two snipers stationed on opposite sides of a fog-covered crevice meet cute, and have to protect the world—and each other. There's an element of the ridiculous to this movie. But also real thrills. ” – Observer Feb 13, 2025 Full Review Parthenope (2024) 45% 2.5/4 “That’s ultimately what Parthenope is: a spectacle. Sorrentino frames stunning scenes, almost like a series of editorial fashion shoots, but the story becomes lost in the aesthetics. ” – Observer Feb 7, 2025 Full Review Companion (2025) 93% 3.5/4 “In the guise of a murderous horror flick this well-made futuristic thriller asks which is a bigger threat: AI or toxic masculinity? ” – Observer Jan 29, 2025 Full Review Back in Action (2025) 28% 2/4 “Cameron Diaz is back from semi-retirement, and she Jamie Foxx have real charisma. But this muddled effort can't decide if it's an action movie, comedy, or family film. ” – Observer Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Carry-On (2024) 88% 1.5/4 “Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman try their best, but neither can save this attempt to recreate the Christmas magic of 'Die Hard.' ” – Observer Dec 13, 2024 Full Review Kraven the Hunter (2024) 15% 2/4 “This Spider-Man spin-off is entertaining—the action sequences hold together, blood gushes frequently, and Aaron Taylor Johnson dons a midriff-baring costume. But it's also convoluted and full of extraneous characters. ” – Observer Dec 11, 2024 Full Review A Complete Unknown (2024) 82% 4/4 “Timothée Chalamet looks, acts, even sings like Bob Dylan in this biopic. But director James Mangold treats Dylan as a mythical figure rather than a person, leaving his mystery intact. ” – Observer Dec 11, 2024 Full Review Our Little Secret (2024) 37% 2/4 “Netflix has been on a winning streak with Lindsay Lohan holiday movies. Until now, that is. ” – Observer Nov 27, 2024 Full Review Gladiator II (2024) 70% 3.5/4 “It’s equal parts compelling, ridiculous and uproariously pleasurable, often to the point where you can almost hear director Ridley Scott shouting, “Are you not entertained?” And, in truth, there are very few viewers who will not be.” – Observer Nov 18, 2024 Full Review Joy (2024) 91% 3/4 “It’s not a flashy movie, and the vintage aesthetic sometimes feels unnecessarily dour, but it makes for good storytelling that embraces both our past and present concerns at once. ” – Observer Oct 21, 2024 Full Review Lonely Planet (2024) 40% 1.5/4 “Dern does her best with the script she’s given, but she and Liam Hemsworth have no chemistry. ” – Observer Oct 12, 2024 Full Review The Apprentice (2024) 83% 2.5/4 “Donald Trump has been such inescapable figure in American culture that the question is what could a serious movie about him actually have to say at this point? As it turns out, the answer is somewhere in between “a lot” and “nothing new.” ” – Observer Oct 12, 2024 Full Review Blitz (2024) 81% 4/4 “McQueen—a director who understands we can only look forward by looking back—gives us a new lens through which to examine WWII in this masterful film. ” – Observer Oct 9, 2024 Full Review The Wild Robot (2024) 96% 4/4 “The Oscar for Best Animated Feature is The Wild Robot’s to lose. The film, from DreamWorks Animation, is a deeply moving, beautifully crafted example of what an animated movie can be when the medium is treated with reverence.” – Observer Sep 25, 2024 Full Review My Old Ass (2024) 90% 3.5/4 “My Old Ass is a success because it’s so earnest, allowing these ideas to resonate with subtle humor, emotional heft and, most importantly, self-acceptance. It’s also very good encouragement to go pop a few ‘shrooms in the woods. ” – Observer Sep 11, 2024 Full Review Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) 75% 3.5/4 “Tim Burton's sequel to his 1988 classic is a hilariously strange and charismatic voyage through Hollywood’s best creative minds and most skilled special effects magicians. ” – Observer Sep 4, 2024 Full Review Jackpot! (2024) 31% 1/4 “Awkwafina is a lottery winner in a future version of Los Angeles. John Cena is her protector from the hordes who want to kill her for the money. And this movie is a tedious amalgam of things you’ve already seen. ” – Observer Aug 14, 2024 Full Review It Ends With Us (2024) 54% 3/4 “This dark and melodramatic story could easily have taken a turn into Lifetime territory. But Lively and her director/co-star Justin Baldoni keep it on track.” – Observer Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Fly Me to the Moon (2024) 65% 3/4 “The movie, brought to life in part thanks to the efforts of its star and producer Scarlett Johansson, is a charming, cute possible history, invoking rom-com tactics and old-fashioned appeal in a way that is fairly successful. ” – Observer Jul 9, 2024 Full Review A Family Affair (2024) 35% 1.5/4 “This fantasy where everyone gets what they want is made awkward and uncomfortable by the lack of chemistry between its stars. ” – Observer Jul 1, 2024 Full Review The Bikeriders (2023) 80% 3/4 “The attitude and the vibe are pitch perfect, even if the story itself sometimes feels like less of a story and more a series of images. ” – Observer Jun 18, 2024 Full Review
