The King of Kings (2025) 65% “As a fan of animation, it’s especially strange to hear Jim Cummings (who has voiced Winnie the Pooh, among many other characters) voice the soldier mocking Jesus on the cross, but that’s just the nature of the beast.” – Midwest Film Journal Apr 17, 2025 Full Review Bullet Train Explosion (2025) 74% “If you get pleasure out of logistics and unpacking of emotional trauma, you’ll have no trouble staying on board. ” – Midwest Film Journal Apr 17, 2025 Full Review The Electric State (2025) 15% “A big, inoffensive action spectacle.” – Midwest Film Journal Mar 14, 2025 Full Review In the Lost Lands (2025) 24% “You think you saw this one a few years back? Yeah, probably. Here it is again — brand new and a little uglier.” – Midwest Film Journal Mar 6, 2025 Full Review Captain America: Brave New World (2025) 48% “In all likelihood, Captain America: Brave New World, like The Incredible Hulk, is destined to be equally maligned and memory-holed. ” – Midwest Film Journal Feb 14, 2025 Full Review Hacking at Leaves (2024) “It’s crafted with an unstoppable editorial kineticism, a keen sense of humor and a sorrowful attempt at hope that feels uniquely of this moment.” – Midwest Film Journal Feb 11, 2025 Full Review Solvent (2024) 94% “An undeniably fascinating and frightful experience that makes truly creative use of modern and classic filmmaking techniques to make its points.” – Midwest Film Journal Jan 14, 2025 Full Review The Brutalist (2024) 93% “The Brutalist is a film with big ideas about the nature of art and its relationship to commerce in America as well as one with the talent behind it to articulate those concerns in stunning fashion” – Midwest Film Journal Jan 14, 2025 Full Review Den of Thieves: Pantera (2025) 62% “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is a shockingly delightful crime saga in its own right, with strong character work and a memorable heist that takes advantage of it.” – Midwest Film Journal Jan 10, 2025 Full Review The Damned (2024) 91% “The Damned lives in a space where its fear and horror come from Eva and her lot suffering in the cold, dark and uncontrollable world of Arctic winter” – Midwest Film Journal Jan 5, 2025 Full Review Separated (2024) 96% “The saddest thing about Separated — and, in fact, all of Morris’s documentaries about American politics — is not that they’re about something that happened but rather about all the mistakes we’re primed to make again and again and again. ” – Midwest Film Journal Dec 17, 2024 Full Review Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) 56% “I don’t think Jenkins collecting a paycheck... is a bad thing in the grand scheme of things. There just wasn’t much to be done with a story where the protagonist’s fatal flaw is that he’s the best Lion King to ever do it.” – Midwest Film Journal Dec 17, 2024 Full Review Moana 2 (2024) 61% “"Moana 2" is a by-the-numbers sequel that feels like someone trying to cram 10 hours into two. I had low expectations, and to be honest, I was still a little disappointed.” – Midwest Film Journal Nov 26, 2024 Full Review Gladiator II (2024) 70% “Scott... is still skilled enough to turn what amounts to the same script you’d have seen in a direct-to-DVD sequel circa 2005 into something that looks expensive and professional, he’s no longer at the point where he can make it sing” – Midwest Film Journal Nov 20, 2024 Full Review Venom: The Last Dance (2024) 40% “It’s commendable that Hardy and co. managed to serve up three goofy takes on an inherently absurd character that remained emotionally honest right up until the very end” – Midwest Film Journal Oct 27, 2024 Full Review Alien: Romulus (2024) 80% “Ridley Scott tried to give us original visions in the 2010s, and those were rejected, so we’re going to get some of this instead. You know what? That’s fine.” – Midwest Film Journal Oct 15, 2024 Full Review Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) 78% “Deadpool & Wolverine is just the circlejerk to end all circlejerks, a holding pattern for a franchise that just cannot afford to sit in place any longer ” – Midwest Film Journal Jul 26, 2024 Full Review Skywalkers: A Love Story (2024) 74% “The most fascinating element of the film is its unvarnished look at the first decade of the influencer economy and the way that the industry asks for more and more extreme behavior from its self-employed stars.” – Midwest Film Journal Jul 12, 2024 Full Review SCALA!!! Or, the Incredibly Strange Rise and Fall of the World's Wildest Cinema and How It Influenced a Mixed-Up Generation of Weirdos and Misfits (2023) 100% “It makes a strong case for the Scala’s place in LGBTQ history and film history while remaining funny and informative. Most of all, it makes you appreciate the places that matter.” – Midwest Film Journal Jul 8, 2024 Full Review Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024) 65% “A sequel to a legacy sequel, shot by two hot young directors trying to make an old franchise sing for younger audiences. It didn’t do it for me.” – Midwest Film Journal Jun 7, 2024 Full Review Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) 90% “Look, Furiosa isn’t bad... but at first blush, it’s difficult not to focus on its inferiorities and the way it never really overcomes the curse of being a prequel ” – Midwest Film Journal May 25, 2024 Full Review Hit Man (2023) 95% “Unthinkably talented and picturesque movie stars falling in love, with a little murder in the mix? It’s the stuff of which silver-screen dreams have always been made.” – Midwest Film Journal May 24, 2024 Full Review Rebel Moon: Part Two - The Scargiver (2024) 16% “One wonders whether a director who keeps releasing bad movies while insisting perfection is just a few cuts away might have a few more fundamentals to work on than he thinks. A talent for inciting social media mobs can only get you so far.” – Midwest Film Journal Apr 19, 2024 Full Review Enter the Clones of Bruce (2023) 100% “Enter the Clones of Bruce is pure pleasure for any fan of 1970s action cinema from Hong Kong or the surrounding countries, but it’s also entertaining enough to serve as an introduction to the vast, off-kilter world of exploitation cinema.” – Midwest Film Journal Apr 18, 2024 Full Review Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) 54% “Beware any critics who want to tell you the problems with GxK rest with how it depicts the characters; faults aside, Wingard knows what he’s doing, and it’s a valid approach. I just wish his style clicked with me.” – Midwest Film Journal Mar 29, 2024 Full Review
