Biography:

I am a Peruvian film scholar who wants to stay connected with the outside world through film criticism. My life as a moviegoer started in Lima but I only became a real cinephile as a Screen Studies student at Clark University. I then went further into academia via the MA in Film & Media Studies at Columbia University and I am currently doing a PhD at the University of Edinburgh. I remain a movie buff at heart so I appreciate the opportunity to share some of my reviews down below. You can also find me on Academia.edu and Letterboxd.

The Good Sister (2025) “The success of the film lies in an intimate, non-judgmental look that merely observes the martyrdom that the protagonist goes through when she cannot reconcile her feelings with her moral integrity. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Feb 14, 2025 Full Review The Outrun (2024) 82% “The Outrun is a notable example of a literary adaptation that is not content with simply offering a dramatization, taking advantage of the power of its cinematic medium. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Aug 22, 2024 Full Review Armand (2024) 75% “Tøndel does not reinvent cinematic language or dramaturgy here like his grandfather, but he honors his legacy by offering an intelligent and exciting film that, starting from a simple premise, tests the limits of human behaivor. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Aug 19, 2024 Full Review Sing Sing (2023) 97% “Apart from being an uplifting and emotional fictional work, this film constitutes an ambitious and categorical test of the power of artistic rehabilitation and the importance of second chances. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Aug 19, 2024 Full Review Mexico 86 (2024) 93% “Mexico 86 misses the opportunity to be a memorable cinematic tribute... [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Aug 13, 2024 Full Review MaXXXine (2024) 72% “A film that inspires a strange nostalgia for an imperfect and dangerous 80s cultural context, and for a type of shameless, perverse but ultimately entertaining and convincing cinema. [Full reivew in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Jul 17, 2024 Full Review Kinds of Kindness (2024) 71% “The stories go from more to less, the third one being the weakest even on a humoristic level, but the power of the first two compensates for it. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Jul 8, 2024 Full Review Challengers (2024) 88% “After all, more than a bisexual erotic thriller, this is a sports romantic comedy daring enough to fit commercial sensibilities and one that a young Almodóvar would have liked to direct. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro May 13, 2024 Full Review Queens (Reinas) (2024) 88% “... Reynicke's film stands out for its happy, warm atmosphere, and entertaining and powerful script.” – Cinencuentro Jan 25, 2024 Full Review Frida (2024) 89% “Carla Gutiérrez's documentary has at least restored the essence of the Mexican vernacular in cinema and pays sincere tribute to a woman who is essential for the understanding of contemporary art and society. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Jan 22, 2024 Full Review 20 Days in Mariupol (2023) 100% “The dramatic soundtrack is probably the only dissonant and unnecessary component in an extremely brave and essential documentary that is dedicated to portraying the horror of a specific city and its population... [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Jan 19, 2024 Full Review Maestro (2023) 78% “... It is incomprehensible that this movie is interpreted as a tribute worthy of the name Maestro. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Dec 19, 2023 Full Review Saltburn (2023) 71% “The platonic romance between Oliver and Felix is just the icing on a somewhat bloated but undoubtedly lavish and tasty social satirical cake. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Nov 27, 2023 Full Review May December (2023) 91% “Despite the high controversy of the central theme, the black comedy peeks shamelessly throughout the script co-written by Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Nov 22, 2023 Full Review The Other Son (2023) 100% “The Other Son is sufficiently lucid, moving and accessible, especially for a teenage audience. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Nov 15, 2023 Full Review Foe (2023) 24% “Although Davis obtains notable powerful performances from his leading duo, the experiment sadly turns out to be insipid, confusing and unnecessary, and a real scam as futuristic cinema. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Nov 1, 2023 Full Review All of Us Strangers (2023) 96% “With All of Us Strangers (2023) Haigh returns to the most intimate and melancholic portrait of a contemporary homosexual experience similar to Weekend... [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Oct 16, 2023 Full Review El Conde (2023) 83% “On a conceptual level, this is one of Larraín's most original and ambitious films. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Sep 19, 2023 Full Review Past Lives (2023) 95% “Like few others, Past Lives shows the cultural and emotional dichotomy of those of us who have left our countries of origin and never completely detach ourselves from them, no matter how many years go by... [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Aug 30, 2023 Full Review Fremont (2023) 98% “Fremont cloaks Donya's life in a layer of dry, black humor reminiscent of Alexander Payne's films, making it an experience that is as rewarding as it is uplifting. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Aug 28, 2023 Full Review Femme (2023) 93% “Femme dismantles preconceived notions and expectations we may have about drag queens and challenges the parameters of what we understand today as masculinity... [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Aug 25, 2023 Full Review Silent Roar (2023) 90% “Johnny Barrington's debut feature is as frenetic and refreshing as the Atlantic waves pounding the northern Isle of Lewis, wrapping up a quirky teen story that blends humor, tragedy, surfing, fantasy, sex, and faith. [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Aug 24, 2023 Full Review Passages (2023) 95% “Evocative of Match Point and other adult dramas at the brink of extinction these days centered on deliberately immoral characters, Passages is far more complex and provocative than a bisexual love triangle... [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Aug 24, 2023 Full Review Lost in the Night (2023) 60% “Adrián Durazo's splendid photography which particularly dazzles at night and Juan Daniel García Treviño's acting aren't enough to compensate for this disparate and bothersome itinerary through a bleak Mexico... [Full review in Spanish]” – Cinencuentro Aug 17, 2023 Full Review Asteroid City (2023) 76% “Anderson has neglected his characters' appeal and transcendence in lieu of an aesthetic that's splendorous yet artificial.
