Jason Adams

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

Jason knew the movies were his bag the second he saw that lawyer sitting on a toilet getting eaten by a Tyrannosaur, and he's never looked back once since. Simultaneously a movie snob who watches Fassbinder for fun while also being a trash apologist prone to reenacting the death scenes in the Friday the 13th series through vivid pantomime, he's got room for everything projected onto a big screen in his big roomy heart. He's been covering the daily beat on his site My New Plaid Pants since 2005 and is a regular contributor to The Film Experience. He's a member of GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, and has been accredited to cover basically every New York City based film festival for the past ten years including NYFF and Tribeca. The Wedding Banquet (2025) 88% “From Ahn’s direction down through the script to each and every one of these performances, The Wedding Banquet is so warm it will make your heart glow like E.T.’s and grow like the Grinch’s.” – Pajiba Apr 21, 2025 Full Review Warfare (2025) 93% “A slice of visceral verité... that said, as with Civil War, it’s difficult not to feel as if Garland’s continued insistence on abstracting the Politics out of War does some disservice to reality” – Pajiba Apr 17, 2025 Full Review Hell of a Summer (2023) 52% “A lazy lazy lazy movie that offers up nothing new or interesting in its under ninety minutes” – My New Plaid Pants Apr 3, 2025 Full Review Black Bag (2025) 96% “Hang it in an art gallery and title it hot-to-trot—Black Bag is the heat.” – Pajiba Mar 13, 2025 Full Review The Rule of Jenny Pen (2024) 71% “The Rule of Jenny Pen does for assisted living what Buffy the Vampire Slayer did for high school—it makes goofy metaphor of our fears” – Pajiba Mar 10, 2025 Full Review The Monkey (2025) 79% “This movie is bleak and pitch-black hearted and finds the absurd pointlessness of human existence to be a ribald punchline. It's of a piece with the Final Destination movies, but if they were less Rube Goldberg and more Albert Camus on acid. ” – My New Plaid Pants Feb 20, 2025 Full Review Plainclothes (2025) 79% “Plainclothes nails the way it all felt definitively fleeting—“gay marriage” was so far off the radar as to be positively lunar. There was no holding on when we were nothing to hold onto. Whispers of people, frayed by the headwinds.” – Pajiba Feb 13, 2025 Full Review Heart Eyes (2025) 81% “You’ll side-eye that glass of red wine at your romantic Valentine’s dinner after watching this movie, that is for certain.” – Pajiba Feb 7, 2025 Full Review Atropia (2025) 41% “Shawkat and Turner share such a weird, fun chemistry together that even as Atropia wanders off the map and into a desert of its own making it’s hard to get too worked up about [it] — their relationship is fraught and goofy and totally charming” – Pajiba Feb 6, 2025 Full Review Twinless (2025) 95% “Tasy Cringe Farce For Sickos” – Pajiba Feb 4, 2025 Full Review Lurker (2025) 96% “Never has “fake it until you make it” taken on such a sinister edge as it does here... devastatingly incisive ” – Pajiba Feb 4, 2025 Full Review OBEX (2025) 100% “A terrific and tactile achievement from the fresh-faced filmmaker... Movies this particular, this personalized and hand-crafted, remain a rare gift.” – Pajiba Jan 28, 2025 Full Review La Pietà (2022) 71% “Not for the faint of heart or belly, this tale of true smother-love is a cotton-candied labial dystopia you won’t, you can’t, you shan’t soon forget.” – Pajiba Jan 18, 2025 Full Review Eat the Night (2024) 67% “There are morsels of beauty and wisdom and real modern-living peculiarity that are here to be savored, even if they do occasionally dribble down its chin.” – Pajiba Jan 13, 2025 Full Review Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (2024) 100% “I'd say I wished I was a kid so these movies could be formative but they make me feel like a kid and reform me in their image anyway... absolute and total buck-tooth-to-stub-toe delight start to finish.” – My New Plaid Pants Dec 20, 2024 Full Review Kraven the Hunter (2024) 15% “Textbook Bad Movie behavior... but that doesn't mean there's not a good helping of true WTF fun to be had ” – My New Plaid Pants Dec 11, 2024 Full Review A Complete Unknown (2024) 82% “A Complete Unknown doesn't break open the bio-pic mold but it's about as good an example of what's-to-be-expected can be” – My New Plaid Pants Dec 10, 2024 Full Review The End (2024) 56% “a post-apocalyptic musical of deadly sweet viciousness... Oppenheimer’s film is practically a dissertation on the mellifluous to atonal tension between who we are and who we think and tell ourselves that we are” – Pajiba Dec 8, 2024 Full Review Nosferatu (2024) 84% “Delectably degenerate to its core, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu gets its rocks off with rot, decay, and necromantic corruption... dare I say it tastes so good you just might want to die forever, toes curling up into its beautiful dark embrace.” – Pajiba Dec 2, 2024 Full Review Heretic (2024) 91% “Heretic wears a loose skin-suit of edgy and thoughtful only to slip into something more comfortable -- conventional thinking. This is a horror movie that will make all the wrong people feel right.” – My New Plaid Pants Nov 4, 2024 Full Review Bird (2024) 86% “In all seriousness Bird floats high on lovely performances from everyone involved, and it shows an already exceptional filmmaker growing out in new, but previously lightly forecasted, directions.” – Pajiba Oct 22, 2024 Full Review Terrifier 3 (2024) 78% “Leone’s devilish glee at getting away with what he’s getting away with—that all of this has somehow become successful—is legitimately infectious; this is easily the most accomplished film in the series, and it’s not just the bigger budget.” – Pajiba Oct 18, 2024 Full Review Blitz (2024) 81% “If my only complaint is that I’d have liked to spend more time in the world that McQueen has created, and more time with the characters he’s placed within that world, then it’s not much of a complaint at all.” – Pajiba Oct 18, 2024 Full Review Queer (2024) 77% “Queer is a bold act of kindness from one queer to another, excavating an unexpected and impossible love story out from one of our most enigmatic homosexual touchstones. It is a rare gem, haunting and strange, a romance of shivering ache and heartbreak ” – Pajiba Oct 17, 2024 Full Review Nickel Boys (2024) 91% “As bewildering and beautiful as it is devastating at its core” – Pajiba Oct 17, 2024 Full Review
