Sinners (2025) 98% 4/4 “Ryan Coogler has created a film that is filled with richly developed characters, sweaty, tense drama, and stunning, religious symbolism.” – The Establishing Shot Apr 21, 2025 Full Review Death of a Unicorn (2025) 54% 2.5/4 “There are plenty of laughs to be had, but the vicious bloodletting starts to overwhelm all the film’s other attributes.” – The Establishing Shot Apr 17, 2025 Full Review Darkest Miriam (2024) 85% 4/4 “The film may start with a remote heroine, a cold formality to the cinematography & austerity to the soundtrack, but eventually all of what we’re witnessing warms and brightens, and we open ourselves to the world whirling around Miriam, just as she does.” – The Establishing Shot Apr 17, 2025 Full Review The President's Wife (2023) 87% 2.5/4 “Some of this French history lesson will be lost on people...but no matter what, any opportunity to see Deneuve strut her stuff is well worth it. ” – The Establishing Shot Apr 17, 2025 Full Review Drop (2025) 84% 2/4 “Landon, et al. drain the tension by overdoing the gloss, the pacing, and the violence. He clearly believes that more is more, but his bad judgment makes the film go down like little more than empty calories.” – The Establishing Shot Apr 15, 2025 Full Review The Penguin Lessons (2024) 80% 3/4 “Coogan makes this worth heading to the cinema to see. He’s been one of the world’s best comics for 30 years, and since his breakthrough starring role opposite Judi Dench in 2013’s drama Philomena, he’s become a sterling dramatic actor as well. ” – The Establishing Shot Mar 30, 2025 Full Review Disney's Snow White (2025) 40% 2/4 “This new take may try to be more adult but it ends up being clunky, often strident, and an uncomfortable blend of modernity and old-timey storytelling.” – The Establishing Shot Mar 20, 2025 Full Review Mickey 17 (2025) 77% 2.5/4 “There is much to admire in this film, from Pattinson’s performances to the increasingly impressive special effects. Yet, these superb elements get thwarted by a story that doesn’t know when to quit. As clever as it is, the film becomes bloated and drags.” – The Establishing Shot Mar 7, 2025 Full Review The Monkey (2025) 79% 3/4 “Perkins nails the morality messaging in his terrific, darkly comic frightener.” – The Establishing Shot Feb 20, 2025 Full Review Parthenope (2024) 45% 2.5/4 “Celeste Dalla Porta goes a long way toward making the film worth watching. She has grace, beauty, and wit, even when the proceedings around her do not.” – The Establishing Shot Feb 8, 2025 Full Review Love Hurts (2025) 19% 1.5/4 “This should be a breezy Valentine's comedy with some amusing, action set pieces, but instead, it has the charm of a breakup text.” – The Establishing Shot Feb 8, 2025 Full Review Heart Eyes (2025) 81% 3/4 “It’s hard enough to find horror films that keep you on the edge of your seat, let alone one that can make you genuinely laugh along the way too, but this new frightener fits the bill. ” – The Establishing Shot Feb 8, 2025 Full Review Presence (2024) 88% 3.5/4 “Like most of the filmmaker’s work, it's clever, compelling, economical. And what makes the film even exceptional is that Soderbergh’s camera is a character in the film representing the POV of the ghost in the story. It’s a brilliant idea and execution.” – The Establishing Shot Jan 28, 2025 Full Review Wolf Man (2025) 50% 1.5/4 “Been there, howled at that, far too many times before.” – The Establishing Shot Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Babygirl (2024) 76% 1.5/4 “It’s a shame that this film feels so devoid of joy, let alone sex. It’s not an aphrodisiac; it’s a cold shower.” – The Establishing Shot Dec 23, 2024 Full Review Nosferatu (2024) 84% 2/4 “For all of its eeriness and dread, the whole movie feels remote, dare I say, bloodless. ” – The Establishing Shot Dec 23, 2024 Full Review Wicked (2024) 87% 4/4 “This entire adaptation deepens all the feels from the stage show and builds on them exponentially. It is a sterling achievement, one filled with brains, heart, and courage.” – The Establishing Shot Nov 20, 2024 Full Review Heretic (2024) 91% 3/4 “Grant is stunning. Without changing his looks outside of a pair of eyeglasses, he becomes something truly unseemly and unnerving in this film. He handles a lot of dialogue too, making it all cunning and threatening.” – The Establishing Shot Nov 19, 2024 Full Review A Real Pain (2024) 96% 3.5/4 “A film filled with laughs, sure, but also one brimming with pathos and gravitas.” – The Establishing Shot Nov 19, 2024 Full Review Emilia Pérez (2024) 72% 2.5/4 “ It invests in a brave examination of identity, family, womanhood, and sexual politics.” – The Establishing Shot Nov 1, 2024 Full Review Conclave (2024) 93% 4/4 “Men are not God, the film argues, and when they try to be, that may be their truest sins. Being mindful and dutiful is much closer to godliness and that is why a manager was needed to shepherd these men. That struck me as a wholly uplifting message. ” – The Establishing Shot Oct 27, 2024 Full Review My Name is Alfred Hitchcock (2022) 93% 3/4 “The ruse of Hitchcock relating his thoughts can’t help but be controversial, and quite far from essential, especially since Hitchcock always ensured in his films that we understood exactly what was occurring, often with nary a word.” – The Establishing Shot Oct 26, 2024 Full Review Nightbitch (2024) 59% 3/4 “The film is a plea for society to not take women or motherhood for granted.” – The Establishing Shot Oct 26, 2024 Full Review The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024) 97% 3.5/4 “It all makes for a compelling, character-driven piece about the toll of violence, the overreach of totalitarian governments, the power of protest, and a modern world that simply is not going back.” – The Establishing Shot Oct 26, 2024 Full Review Anora (2024) 93% 4/4 “This film is so things, so many little, delightful things, but its emotional wallop is about as big as any film can boast.” – The Establishing Shot Oct 26, 2024 Full Review
