Ailey (2021) 90% “That "place" in live performance is by nature evanescent, but its depiction in documentary film requires context and editorializing. Wignot's aestheticism works against both in Ailey, rendering the famously private artist as elusive as he was in life.” – AwardsWatch Dec 8, 2021 Full Review Unclenching the Fists (2021) 88% B “The underlying weakness of the film lies in the screenplay, although Kovalenko's direction and her preoccupations in this film mark the emergence of a new voice.” – AwardsWatch Dec 8, 2021 Full Review Prism (2021) A “Yameogo's section assumes a straightforward, journalistic stance, and features a delightful actor who interviews filmmakers and cinematographers.” – AwardsWatch Sep 26, 2021 Full Review Julia (2021) 96% A “Cohen and West's well-paced, beautifully scored film is a sublime example of biography as historical record, in part because it documents Julia Child's significant role in the rise of public television, and in the invention of "food culture."” – AwardsWatch Sep 18, 2021 Full Review Respect (2021) 68% B+ “[Liesl] Tommy's modified "cradle to grave" biopic is entertaining and, in many ways, novel in its conception of Aretha Franklin's life.” – AwardsWatch Aug 9, 2021 Full Review Dead Pigs (2018) 97% “Yan's delightful musical and narrative riffs of American comedy are also a homage, and are represented in Joe Yao's production design...” – A Woman's Picture Aug 4, 2021 Full Review The Perfect Candidate (2019) 93% “Al Mansour, who also co-wrote the script for The Perfect Candidate, depicts the strength of family bonds in reversing the small cruelties Maryam is subject to, at the same time gently taking men to task for their absence and neglect.” – A Woman's Picture Jun 1, 2021 Full Review Winchester (2018) 12% “No "scary movie" cliché is left unexplored in Winchester...” – Biography.com Nov 7, 2019 Full Review Ever After (2018) 80% “The alternating light and darkness here, and throughout "Ever After," is a wonderful leitmotif for the women's labyrinthian path, the journey of heroes.” – Los Angeles Times Jun 26, 2019 Full Review Walking on Water (2018) 88% “It is when Paounov reveals Christo's leonine qualities that "Walking on Water" achieves a rare authenticity.” – Los Angeles Times May 23, 2019 Full Review Loving Vincent: The Impossible Dream (2019) “Michal Weçel's "Loving Vincent: The Impossible Dream" is a lively, lightning-paced documentary.” – Los Angeles Times May 17, 2019 Full Review #Female Pleasure (2018) 94% “The issues they confront are not new, yet the stories of their radicalization are engaging, and Miller's deft editing and objective approach result in a surprisingly intimate and life-affirming film.” – Los Angeles Times Mar 14, 2019 Full Review Time for Ilhan (2018) 94% “An exciting and entertaining documentary.” – Film Journal International Feb 19, 2019 Full Review Ghetto (2002) 81% “Like Lisa Gossels' Children of Chabannes (2000), which tells another little-known story about French villagers who saved 400 Jewish children, Shanghai Ghetto is a celebration of humanity.” – Film Journal International Jan 29, 2019 Full Review On Her Shoulders (2018) 96% “Powerful documentary provides an intimate perspective on the oppression and sexual abuse of the Yazidi minority in Iraq.” – Film Journal International Oct 18, 2018 Full Review Hale County This Morning, This Evening (2018) 97% “Begins as an effective tone poem, but Ross muddles the documentary with attempts at characterization and narrative.” – Film Journal International Sep 13, 2018 Full Review I Am Not a Witch (2017) 98% “This striking and original film by a Zambian-Welsh writer-director is a feminist allegory set in Zambia.” – Film Journal International Sep 6, 2018 Full Review Chasing Madoff (2011) 48% “Chasing Madoff takes ninety-one minutes and delivers nothing more than what it hopes to pass off as the story of an unsung, working-class hero.” – Cineaste Magazine Aug 21, 2018 Full Review Young Adult (2011) 80% “There is not much to admire in Young Adult in terms of originality in cinematography or production design.” – Cineaste Magazine Aug 21, 2018 Full Review The House I Live In (2012) 94% “What makes The House I Live In so potent is the filmmaker's sincerity. Despite a preference for sweeping statements and conclusions, he establishes palpable emotional connections to several of his subjects who are victims of the war on drugs.” – Cineaste Magazine Aug 21, 2018 Full Review Pelé (2016) 33% “The film's predictability is counterbalanced by a terrific score comprised of several styles of Latin music, colorful production design, lots of special effects, and some memorable plays by the child actors who portray Pelé.” – Biography.com Aug 21, 2018 Full Review All Eyez on Me (2017) 17% “While a good production provides audiences,... glimpses of the art form and its significance to America's musical legacy, it does not compensate for [its] hackneyed screenplay, with its confusing narrative and utter lack of character development.” – Biography.com Aug 21, 2018 Full Review The Swan (2017) 82% “An awkward debut film by an Icelandic director, The Swan centers on a nine-year-old girl on her first summer away from home.” – Film Journal International Aug 9, 2018 Full Review Never Goin' Back (2018) 76% “In her debut feature, writer-director Augustine Frizzel crafts a girl buddy movie with far too many male characters.” – Film Journal International Jul 31, 2018 Full Review Leave No Trace (2018) 100% “Debra Granik, director and co-writer of Winter's Bone, is back with another-slightly more low-key, but still riveting-story of "the other America."” – Film Journal International Jun 27, 2018 Full Review
