Matt Easterbrook

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

Matt Easterbrook is a young Canadian who, instead of protesting things or getting wasted every night, watches movies and then reviews them for kicks. Please note that Mr Easterbrook is extremely biased towards certain films, especially ones starring Ralph Fiennes, Nicole Kidman, Ian McKellen, and any movie that portrays llamas in a positive light. He is pleased to be a member of the Online Film Critics Society, and hopes that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. If it isn't, frankly my dear, I don't give a damn, because I'm the king of the world, WOO-HOO! Bonus points to those who can guess his favorite movies.

Seabiscuit (2003) 78% 4/5 “Written and directed by Gary Ross, whose last film was the amazing Pleasantville, this one doesn't quite attain the heights of its predecessor but is still a solid piece of old-fashioned moviemaking.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Feb 4, 2004 Full Review Hamlet (1948) 96% 4/5 “Of the four versions of Hamlet that I've seen, this one is the most psychological, the one that truly delves into Hamlet's mind and psyche.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Jan 30, 2004 Full Review Cold Mountain (2003) 70% 4.5 / 5 “A rapturous, moving experience that's filled with drama, comedy, music, and action.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Jan 22, 2004 Full Review Peter Pan (2003) 77% 4/5 “A requiem for lost childhood, which simultaneously stands in light judgment of Peter's refusal to grow up. It's a frank and rather beautiful conundrum that's wonderfully addressed.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Jan 11, 2004 Full Review Lost in Translation (2003) 95% 4/5 “Lost In Translation is a subtly moving movie that stays with you longer than you expect.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Jan 5, 2004 Full Review The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) 94% 4.5 / 5 “Not to be missed -- a wonderful blend of Old Hollywood-style entertainment with modern technical skills, of brain candy and food for the soul. You'll never look at epics the same way again.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Jan 4, 2004 Full Review Paths of Glory (1957) 96% 5/5 “” – Matt's Movie Reviews Dec 27, 2003 Full Review House of Sand and Fog (2003) 75% 2.5 / 5 “Everything that happens in the movie could have been avoided if Kathy had just opened her freaking mail.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Dec 27, 2003 Full Review The Godfather, Part III (1990) 66% 5/5 “” – Matt's Movie Reviews Dec 25, 2003 Full Review The Last Samurai (2003) 66% 4/5 “If there was any justice in the world (and if there were no such thing as The Return Of The King), The Last Samurai would sweep up the technical awards come Oscar time.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Dec 25, 2003 Full Review Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) 85% 3.5/5 “While there are a few battle scenes, there's also an hour and a half of talking, and with so many characters, you need to have someone you can identify with.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Dec 16, 2003 Full Review Elf (2003) 86% 4/5 “How can you not love a guy who can say, "An elf's four major food groups are candy canes, candy CORNS, candy, and syrup," with a straight face?” – Matt's Movie Reviews Dec 11, 2003 Full Review The Palm Beach Story (1942) 97% 5/5 “” – Matt's Movie Reviews Nov 24, 2003 Full Review The Little Princess (1939) 88% 3/5 “” – Matt's Movie Reviews Nov 6, 2003 Full Review Gentleman's Agreement (1947) 82% 3/5 “I definitely can't fault Gentleman's Agreement for its subject matter, but man, does it ever beat you over the head with it.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Oct 26, 2003 Full Review Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) 79% 5/5 “I was transported back to my childhood watching this movie. I honestly felt like a kid again.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Oct 6, 2003 Full Review The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) 98% 5/5 “The Best Years Of Our Lives is a wonderful character study, and touches on points of humankind's psychiatric makeup that are so obvious they are rarely discussed in cinematic form.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Oct 1, 2003 Full Review Anything Else (2003) 40% 4/5 “Easily the most enjoyable Allen flick since Everyone Says I Love You, and on a par with his 1970s and early 1980s work.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Sep 26, 2003 Full Review The Lost Weekend (1945) 97% 5/5 “More realistic than sentimentalized Hollywood crowd-pleasers like Harvey, and more accessible than complete downers like Leaving Las Vegas, The Lost Weekend is, to me, the definitive film on the subject of alcoholism.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Sep 18, 2003 Full Review Going My Way (1944) 85% 3/5 “Even though I love a good family film now and then, this was too much even for me. It was like having a root canal of cream filling.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Sep 15, 2003 Full Review Mrs. Miniver (1942) 93% 5/5 “One of the most powerful and effective propaganda films of all time ... the job of propaganda is to work your emotions and make you believe in the cause it's selling, and in this, Mrs Miniver succeeds 100%.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Sep 1, 2003 Full Review How Green Was My Valley (1941) 93% 4/5 “While I can't say How Green Was My Valley is the most enjoyable movie ever, it's definitely well-made, and sticks with you.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Aug 24, 2003 Full Review Rebecca (1940) 98% 5/5 “Judith Anderson dominates every scene she's in.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Aug 19, 2003 Full Review You Can't Take It With You (1938) 94% 5/5 “It's one of those movies that's just so enjoyable, you're disappointed when it ends.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Aug 12, 2003 Full Review The Life of Emile Zola (1937) 92% 3/5 “If you sit down to watch The Life of Emile Zola, skip the first third of the movie, because frankly, the beginning blows goats.” – Matt's Movie Reviews Aug 8, 2003 Full Review
