Secret Mall Apartment (2024) 100% “This is a story about a prank, but it’s more broadly a story about individuals taking a stand, however silly, against gentrification.” – Boston Hassle Apr 11, 2025 Full Review The Amateur (2025) 61% 2.5/4 “Malek is a compelling actor, but his marble-mouthed deadpan is ill-suited to a role that requires notes of heartbreak and steely rage.” – Cambridge Day Apr 11, 2025 Full Review The Ballad of Wallis Island (2025) 97% “The Ballad of Wallis Island is not a revolutionary piece of art, but it’s sweet and funny and just plain nice, and I have a feeling a lot of people could use that right now.” – Boston Hassle Apr 7, 2025 Full Review Fucktoys (2025) 92% “Sriram’s loopy, sex-positive sensibility is her own, and as fresh as any new filmmaker you’re likely to see this year.” – Boston Hassle Apr 2, 2025 Full Review Escape From the 21st Century (2024) “This is high-octane sugar rush action filmmaking, and I suspect a lot of people are going to become deeply obsessed with it.” – Boston Hassle Apr 2, 2025 Full Review Sister Midnight (2024) 96% “There is more than a little Buster Keaton in Apte’s performance; she occupies the dead center of nearly every frame, reacting to the absurdities around her with a mix of incredulity and resignation.” – Boston Hassle Mar 31, 2025 Full Review Death of a Unicorn (2025) 53% 2.5/4 “Its comic high points and the strength of its ensemble place “Unicorn” a cut above the average blockbuster, but the perfect balance of action and comedy remains as elusive as its titular beastie. ” – Cambridge Day Mar 29, 2025 Full Review Misericordia (2024) 95% 3/4 “Beyond the nudity and knotty sexuality, “Misericordia” is a truly “adult” film, with enough moral and narrative complexity to keep one thinking about it long after the credits roll.” – Cambridge Day Mar 29, 2025 Full Review Thank You Very Much (2023) 90% “Of what value is a talking-head documentary when every head in it belongs to a known, gleeful liar?” – Boston Hassle Mar 29, 2025 Full Review Vulcanizadora (2024) 96% “Vulcanizadora is a tough hang, but it is saved from utter bleakness by Potrykus’ sympathy for his characters and the deader-than-deadpan wit with which he observes their predicaments.” – Boston Hassle Mar 27, 2025 Full Review The Surfer (2024) 88% “The Surfer may not be the most coherent critique of our unfortunate current social conditions, but it’s a primal scream which feels apt for the moment.” – Boston Hassle Mar 27, 2025 Full Review Opus (2025) 41% “The mood of the piece is exceptional, a sinister, slow-burn psychedelia which works its way under your skin.” – Boston Hassle Mar 15, 2025 Full Review Novocaine (2025) 81% 2/4 “"Novocaine" is a one-joke film, and while the joke is pretty good, the filmmakers keep forgetting to tell it.” – Cambridge Day Mar 13, 2025 Full Review Mickey 17 (2025) 77% “Mickey 17 is a work of maverick inspiration with a genuinely subversive streak. One sadly suspects we won’t see its like again out of Hollywood for at least another four years.” – Boston Hassle Mar 7, 2025 Full Review The Gorge (2025) 63% “The Gorge is precisely the sort of low-brow, high-concept nonsense for which I am an unabashed sucker.” – Boston Hassle Feb 14, 2025 Full Review Heart Eyes (2025) 81% “Heart Eyes seems to suffer from an addled attention span, jumping from horror to romance with little tonal distinction.” – Boston Hassle Feb 7, 2025 Full Review Timestalker (2024) 87% “The result is a film that feels undeniably human, even as it spirals into absurdity.” – Boston Hassle Jan 31, 2025 Full Review Companion (2025) 93% 3/4 “Like “Barbarian,” “Companion” is a biting and wryly witty work of social horror. It’s a film with much on its mind regarding its particular moment in technology and the toxic male insecurity fueling it.” – Cambridge Day Jan 31, 2025 Full Review Presence (2024) 88% “Minor Soderbergh is still a whole lot more interesting than a whole lot of directors at their flashiest, and the sheer gumption and originality of Presence is a pleasure to take in.” – Boston Hassle Jan 24, 2025 Full Review Wolf Man (2025) 50% “There’s some good meat on this picture’s bones, but not quite enough for us to sink our claws into.” – Boston Hassle Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Better Man (2024) 88% “Better Man is a truly bonkers original, a jolt of vision to a moribund genre.” – Boston Hassle Jan 10, 2025 Full Review The Brutalist (2024) 93% 4/4 “The word “masterpiece” tends to be thrown around a lot in the weeks and months leading up to the Academy Awards, but in this case, it’s justified.” – Cambridge Day Jan 7, 2025 Full Review A Complete Unknown (2024) 82% “It is a perfectly fine film about a cultural figure who, for all his highs and lows and assorted personae, could never in a million years be described as “perfectly fine.”” – Boston Hassle Dec 27, 2024 Full Review Nosferatu (2024) 84% “At once stately and deeply perverse, Eggers’ Nosferatu will certainly not be to all tastes, but to my eyes it’s one of the best films of the year.” – Boston Hassle Dec 20, 2024 Full Review Maria (2024) 75% “Here, [Larraín] achieves something of a singularity, melding these two towering figures into one, reflecting their legacies off one another. ” – Boston Hassle Nov 28, 2024 Full Review
