Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore (2025) 96% “A compelling documentary, told in an even more compelling way about Matlin, by the far the most prominent deaf individual in the entertainment industry for the last 40 years.” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 25, 2025 Full Review Predators (2025) 97% “A thought-provoking but sometimes frustrating documentary which is a fascinating exercise, but makes some mistakes, both in leaving certain questions unanswered, and not making the strongest possible case against the show. ” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 25, 2025 Full Review The Shrouds (2024) 74% “One of the best of the 82-year-old Cronenberg’s very productive late-career period, although I was much more interested in the grief aspect of the film than the conspiracy thriller parts.” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 25, 2025 Full Review The Threesome (2025) 84% “Has a plot that seems lifted from a mumblecore film from 2007, but the soul of an older, more screwball-ish rom-com.” – Broad Street Review Apr 25, 2025 Full Review Friendship (2024) 91% “Robinson more than capably carries the film, as a guy who’s certainly weird, but endearing enough that we don’t turn against him completely. ” – Broad Street Review Apr 25, 2025 Full Review The Accountant 2 (2025) 78% “The action’s strong, as are the performances. However, the second Accountant repeats the biggest mistake of the first film: The plot’s twice as complicated as necessary.” – Splice Today Apr 25, 2025 Full Review The Legend of Ochi (2025) 80% “Like Mac and Me for the 21st century: A shameless knockoff of E.T. that misses everything that was great about the real thing.” – Splice Today Apr 25, 2025 Full Review Neil Young: Coastal (2025) 79% “It's way, way more interesting when Young is on stage than when he’s off it. ” – Living Life Fearless Apr 25, 2025 Full Review The Wedding Banquet (2025) 88% “Gay life has changed since 1993, and the new Wedding Banquet reflects that. ” – Splice Today Apr 18, 2025 Full Review Sinners (2025) 98% “The 1930s-set action horror film, which bursts with music, is one of the best of th year, and cements Coogler is one of the best directors working today. ” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 15, 2025 Full Review The Encampments (2025) 94% “The subjects, and presumably the filmmakers, of both October 8 and The Encampments have a strident belief that most major institutions are against them and their cause” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 10, 2025 Full Review October 8 (2024) 72% “Mainly, the subjects, and presumably the filmmakers, of both October 8 and The Encampments have a strident belief that most major institutions are against them and their cause.” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 10, 2025 Full Review Warfare (2025) 93% “Garland and Mendoza have teamed up on an immersive, extremely intense film about an urban battle in the Iraq War.” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 10, 2025 Full Review Eric LaRue (2023) 71% “One of the better recent movies about mass murder, featuring Judy Greer shining in a rare starring role. ” – Splice Today Apr 10, 2025 Full Review Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story (2024) 95% “A generally straightforward examination of the life of Liza Minnelli, featuring lots of archival footage, testimonials from her friends and admirers, and a contemporary interview with Liza herself.” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna (2025) 83% “Some bad things were going on on that movie set, clearly, although the film doesn’t definitively solve what happened.” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Democracy Under Siege (2025) “I feel like I’ve seen this same film ten times already in the last decade- and no one who is the slightest bit persuadable will ever see this.” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 4, 2025 Full Review White with Fear (2024) “This is a better political documentary, which focuses on the last 25 years of Fox News and the right wing marshaling racial prejudice for right-wing ends. ” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Shaking It Up: The Life And Times Of Liz Carpenter (2024) “A fun examination of someone who I admit I was not familiar with previously.” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Becoming Katharine Graham (2025) “It’s impossible to watch this, a story of a Washington Post publisher backing her journalists against a lawless president, without contrasting it with the newspaper’s current owner,” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Centered: Joe Lieberman (2025) “If you’re going to approach this as a study of the politics of the last 30 years, it works. If the point is to make Joe Lieberman look like the most honorable man in politics during that time, it’s a failure. ” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 4, 2025 Full Review AUM: The Cult at the End of the World (2023) 64% “The “yoga school to doomsday cult” pipeline is more well-traveled than you’d think.” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson (2025) “I love Michael’s music, he was a one-of-a-kind artist, and I don’t think it’s at all possible that every one of his many accusers is lying.” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Con Mum (2025) “That poor guy. That’s the thought that kept occurring to me as I watched this Netflix documentary about a British chef,” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Freaky Tales (2024) 74% “Fans of Eric "Sleepy" Floyd will be delighted, but most of what Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are going for fails to connect.” – The SS Ben Hecht Apr 4, 2025 Full Review
