Tim Brennan

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

Tim has been alarmingly enthusiastic about movies ever since childhood. He grew up in Boulder and, foolishly, left Colorado to study Communications in Washington State. Making matters worse, he moved to Connecticut after meeting his too-good-for-him wife. Drawn by the Rockies and a mild climate, he triumphantly returned and settled down back in Boulder County. He's written numerous screenplays, loves hiking, and embarrassed himself in front of Samuel L. Jackson. True story.

Step Back, Doors Closing (2024) 100% “If there’s one thing that Step Back, Doors Closing reminds us it’s the idea that our strongest connections can come out of nowhere. It’s a smart, sweet, perceptive indie film that deserves to be seen.” – About Boulder Apr 21, 2025 Full Review Drop (2025) 84% “Landon understands that his job is not to screw around. He’s made a tight, one hundred minute film that introduces the players, sets up the premise, executes quite a lot of the variations of the premise, and gets us out of the theater with a smile.” – About Boulder Apr 14, 2025 Full Review Liquor Bank (2025) 100% “Cox’s edits, cinematography, and scene blocking simply serve to enhance the emotions of the moment. It’s direction that’s quiet, efficient, and confident.” – About Boulder Apr 7, 2025 Full Review Breakup Season (2024) 94% “It’s a perceptive and bittersweet dramedy virtually anyone can relate to.” – About Boulder Mar 31, 2025 Full Review Death of a Unicorn (2025) 53% “While it may have issues with pacing and some screenplay problems, Death of a Unicorn will impale its way into (and through) your heart.” – About Boulder Mar 24, 2025 Full Review Black Bag (2025) 96% “The film never feels sloppy or rushed. Rather, Soderbergh has trimmed off all the fat he possibly can to make a sleek, sexy espionage thriller that never feels self serious.” – About Boulder Mar 17, 2025 Full Review A/way (2024) “This jewel of a film knows that when the luggage is packed and you step outside your comfort zone, you’re actually expanding it.” – About Boulder Mar 3, 2025 Full Review Alien Love (2024) 45% “Alien Love is ultimately a swing and a miss. A severely undercooked script, inconsistent acting, and direction that needed more time and preparation all undermine this film. ” – About Boulder Feb 24, 2025 Full Review Captain America: Brave New World (2025) 48% “ It fights against the notion that Captain America is political, while also including political imagery all the time. It’s at war trying to decide whether Captain America represents America or represents what America could and should be. ” – About Boulder Feb 17, 2025 Full Review Séance (2024) 100% “Seance uses the trappings of the parlor game spook show to say something tragically accurate. It’s an elegant film made with keen intelligence.” – About Boulder Feb 3, 2025 Full Review Daruma (2023) 100% “Films that embrace real representation are more than just respectful. They create a genuine perspective shift for viewers. One of the best examples of this is Daruma, an indie drama that makes a real impact.” – About Boulder Jan 27, 2025 Full Review September 5 (2024) 93% “September 5 certainly has its issues, yet the way it portrays a historical event and the people doing the best they can with it is effective” – About Boulder Jan 20, 2025 Full Review From Ground Zero (2024) 98% “It’s a mix of twenty-two short films made by people who live within the Gaza strip. To emphasize, these twenty-two directors, along with their casts and crew, prioritized making movies in the midst of a war zone.” – About Boulder Jan 13, 2025 Full Review Scrap (2022) 98% “It’s a low-key gem that announces a new and necessary voice in film. ” – About Boulder Jan 6, 2025 Full Review A Complete Unknown (2024) 82% “Even better are Mangold’s musical sequences. Instead of feeling like glorified jukebox numbers, they feel organic, as if they’re happening right now. That decision gives them an energy that’s lacking in so many other biopics.” – About Boulder Dec 23, 2024 Full Review Hemet, or the Landlady Don't Drink Tea (2023) “The “Liz” makeup Butler wears makes the character look like Granny Leatherface, which is in no way a criticism. If there’s a primary reason to give this film a shot, it’s to watch Butler’s nightmarish performance as Liz. ” – About Boulder Dec 16, 2024 Full Review Nosferatu (2024) 84% “Sometimes, though, a ripoff can lead the way to something improbably special. That’s what happened with Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, and his adaptation must be considered to be in the top tier of vampire movies and one of the best films of the year.” – About Boulder Dec 9, 2024 Full Review Queer (2024) 77% “Daniel Craig does career best work as Lee, and if there’s any justice in this world (Spoiler alert, there isn’t!), he’ll be in the Best Actor conversation for the Academy Awards. ” – About Boulder Dec 2, 2024 Full Review All Happy Families (2023) 86% “It takes skill and intelligence to portray a messy family with precision. That’s what Haroula Rose and her team have done. Not many movies are made anymore like All Happy Families. With a little luck, this gem of a film will change that.” – About Boulder Nov 18, 2024 Full Review Gladiator II (2024) 70% “While we can, we should appreciate Gladiator II. It’s huge without being lumbering, old-fashioned without feeling stodgy, and made with immaculate craftsmanship. Go see this sucker on the biggest screen you can find.” – About Boulder Nov 11, 2024 Full Review Heretic (2024) 91% “Heretic is the kind of movie that’s cinematic catnip for me, one that effectively merges genre thrills with capital-I Ideas. ” – About Boulder Nov 4, 2024 Full Review Venom: The Last Dance (2024) 40% “When Venom: The Last Dance leans into the weirdness and steps away from standard plot points, it pushes the envelope of the genre in an unexpected direction. More of that, please.” – About Boulder Oct 28, 2024 Full Review Maybe Forever (2024) “Maybe Forever is the debut feature from directors Ruby Capacete and George Capacete. They’ve made a microbudget film that’s elegantly made and, despite its seventy-one minute runtime, feels exactly as long as it needs to be. ” – About Boulder Oct 21, 2024 Full Review The Apprentice (2024) 83% “I think the first half of the film set in the 70s works better. There’s more of a focus on the push-pull of their relationship, and the dichotomy between the naive rich kid from Queens and the closeted Manhattan fixer.” – About Boulder Oct 14, 2024 Full Review Saturday Night (2024) 78% “It works best when it’s rocketing between crises, and we get a glimpse of other dramas for a moment or two. Those microplots, and God, do I wish I’d coined that phrase, are the only way a film with several dozen characters can function.” – About Boulder Oct 7, 2024 Full Review
