Tyler Hanley

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

My interest in film began at the age of 8, when my dad would take me and my twin brother to the movie theater regularly. After writing movie reviews for my high-school newspaper, I studied English and creative writing at Foothill College and acting at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. I've co-produced (alongside my brother) five short films and four feature-length films (including the mystery/drama "Table for Six"), and have been writing movie reviews professionally since 2001. I have won several awards from the Peninsula Press Club for a variety of reviews. My other interests include martial arts, literature, playing the drums and juggling.

White House Down (2013) 52% 2.5/4 “While fun in a harmless, artificial sort of way -- like Pop Rocks or costume jewelry -- White House Down is little more than Die Hard at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.” – Palo Alto Weekly Dec 13, 2013 Full Review The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) 74% 4/4 “Smaug ignites the excitement missing from Jackson's sluggish first Hobbit flick, and the stunning visuals -- cinematography, costuming, set design, effects -- set it apart as one of the most impressive fantasy films ever made.” – Palo Alto Weekly Dec 13, 2013 Full Review Homefront (2013) 42% 3/4 “This unlikely teaming of Jason Statham and James Franco proves to be a clever blend of action and acting.” – Palo Alto Weekly Dec 13, 2013 Full Review Pacific Rim (2013) 72% 3/4 “Guillermo del Toro infuses this monstrous undertaking with just what it needs -- a little heart.” – Palo Alto Weekly Jul 15, 2013 Full Review Man of Steel (2013) 57% 3/4 “DC still has much to learn from rival Marvel in the filmmaking realm, but Man of Steel at least offers hope. Hope, and a slight headache” – Palo Alto Weekly Jun 14, 2013 Full Review After Earth (2013) 12% 1/4 “After Earth is the sort of picture the Mystery Science Theater 3000 gang would salivate over.” – Palo Alto Weekly May 31, 2013 Full Review Iron Man 3 (2013) 79% 3/4 “Despite a somewhat slow start and occasional plot missteps, Iron Man 3 ultimately soars thanks to its charismatic leading man and director Shane Black's man-on-wire balancing act of humor and action.” – Palo Alto Weekly May 5, 2013 Full Review The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013) 37% 2/4 “Wonderstone is an enticing concept but lacks the laughs to back up its potential.” – Palo Alto Weekly Mar 16, 2013 Full Review Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) 52% 3/4 “Director Bryan Singer, of The Usual Suspects and X-Men fame, infuses the film with just the right balance of action, romance and goofy fun.” – Palo Alto Weekly Mar 3, 2013 Full Review Bullet to the Head (2012) 45% 1.5/4 “The title itself should deter viewers who favor smart cinema over mindless mayhem.” – Palo Alto Weekly Feb 1, 2013 Full Review The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) 64% 3/4 “Fantasy fans hungry for a second breakfast of Tolkien-fueled fare can get their fill with this visually sumptuous feast.” – Palo Alto Weekly Dec 14, 2012 Full Review Argo (2012) 96% 3.5/4 “A goofy sci-fi film dubbed Argo never got made in 1980. Fortunately for moviegoers, a brilliant, Oscar-worthy drama/thriller of the same name did get made in 2012.” – Palo Alto Weekly Oct 12, 2012 Full Review Pitch Perfect (2012) 81% 3/4 “Some films make you weep; others make you squirm. Then there are those that simply make you smile. Pitch Perfect falls into the third category thanks to its strong script, charming cast and catchy soundtrack.” – Palo Alto Weekly Sep 28, 2012 Full Review Looper (2012) 93% 3.5/4 “Looper is a thoughtful genre-bender that brings science-fiction, action and mystery together in one tight package.” – Palo Alto Weekly Sep 28, 2012 Full Review Trouble With the Curve (2012) 51% 2/4 “Slogging through the first 75 minutes of Trouble with the Curve is akin to watching a scoreless baseball game that doesn't get exciting until the ninth inning.” – Palo Alto Weekly Sep 21, 2012 Full Review The Campaign (2012) 66% 2.5/4 “The strong cast and topical plot help make for a hilarious first hour.” – Palo Alto Weekly Aug 10, 2012 Full Review The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) 71% 3/4 “One of Marvel Comics' popular titles in the 1980s was 'The Spectacular Spider-Man,' and that adjective describes this film. Both familiar and fresh, it's a spectacle with enough thrills and humor to satisfy most fans.” – Palo Alto Weekly Jul 6, 2012 Full Review People Like Us (2012) 52% 3/4 “Solid writing and strong performances by leads Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks propel People Like Us from a maudlin drama to a memorable one.” – Palo Alto Weekly Jun 29, 2012 Full Review Brave (2012) 78% 3.5/4 “There is a surprising beauty to Brave that transcends its visual excellence.
