Delta Reviews

Aug 18, 2010

Too slow moving and depressing but the cinematography is stunning.

Filmed in the Romanian Delta, this Hungarian production beautifully captures in sound and imagery the primordial elements of nature. Couple this with incest and rape and you get a front row ticket to Cannes. Weak storyline, but some good delta shots.

Beautiful cinematography, great directing, acting and music. The best film i've watched in the Bath Film Festival~~ The story is tragic and heavy, though, I like it a lot!!! "Unacceptable relationship" is not the worst thing .... the people's attitude and action towards it is more terrifying!!! The original main actor died when the film was shot more than half... adding the tragic element to this film, even behind the scene.....

Slow moving, but kind of interesting. Still haven't really figured out what happened in the end.

Some moments of great filmmaking flair, but surrounded by many bewildering plot turns that feel slightly obtuse. (Still thinking on it all though.)

has its strong moments, but stupid people and slow progression

Mundruczo's arty film Delta has the slow, deliberate pacing of fellow Hungarian Bela Tarr, telling a sparse tale of a young man returning to his village of birth, building a house out in the Danube Delta and striking up an incestuous relationship with his sister, as you do... Nicely shot, but the characters are very thinly developed. I think the aim was a kind of archetypal, timeless mood to the film which works in certain scenes, particularly during construction of the house, yet the lack of insight or motivations puts a distance between character and viewer. This is compounded by the filming style, so that as the film builds up to its inevitable downbeat ending, I simply didn't care enough about the outcome and the consequences of the couples transgression.

A few days after seeing it and I am still touched by the imagery of the film. Beautiful, patient shots that capture both the landscape and the people in a way that no hollywood film would dare. I found the film very meditative and refreshing. The faces of the villagers are so real and expressive it feels like you are in a Walker Evans photo. The sound design is also splendid.

a beautiful film where not much happens and hardly any words are spoken (such bliss! people should speak less!) It has been described as 'slow-burning', which is an understatement...I love that it takes time, and we aren't force-fed plot and character. We see their relationship grow as they build the house, but even then we aren't given too much. and i adore the turtle.

A visually striking film, big on big, brooding exteriors, like the procession of funeral boats that marks the passing of a drunk. What Mundruczo still lacks is any handle on involving narrative machinations. Admittedly, this is one of those long, hot summer movies, in which emotions are supposed to simmer gently, but atmosphere only gets "Delta" so far, and comes increasingly to seem like a cloak for the callow misanthropy of the director's worldview. These characters have no inner life, to put it bluntly. We might wonder how two young people living on a lake in the middle of nowhere would spend their time, but the hut contains no books or television or music; its inhabitants just loll around looking into the middle distance, like eternal teenagers. Both Lajko and Mundruczo's nymphet muse Toth remain too pliant for their (and the film's) own good, submitting meekly to each sickness, rape and humiliation that befalls them, two more examples of the passive crash-test dummies that keep springing up in today's arthouse movies: characters who exist to be tossed to the elements, seem infuriatingly incapable of making decisions for themselves, and prove entirely at their director's mercy - or lack thereof.

A story told in silence. Dramatic in scenery and sound. Great honesty in performance. Touching

Film roumano-hongrois prime a Cannes.

I am a film student, sort of, but I agree with Dana. Beautifully shot, but disappointing otherwise.

Beautiful scenery, explicit rape and torture scenes. Too much for me.

Only the direction of this film is worth mentioning here...
