Mammoth Reviews

No words can describe is really awful movie. Waste of time.

Moodysson clearly overreaches, packing his movie with so many ideas and stories that could all be fleshed out into interesting movies on their own, but here come off as undercooked and disconnected from one another. Which, sure is part of his point, but it's that tired "Westerners are emotionally distant and detached" point that movies have been making for decades now. If you're gonna be fatalistically cynical, at least be original about it.

I' ve seen it several times now. It' s not that good but Gael's and Michelle performances plus the music deserve the high ratings.

It's a good movie but i'll never watch it again. It's a masterclass in feel bad cinema.

Like Babel, but not as engaging...

Poetic commentary on globalisation and the family...

Make no mistake, those who didn't like this didn't get it. Moodyson has moved on from the obvious references to Bergman, Bergman, Sjöström et al in " Fucking Amal" to surpass his hero. Let this film break your heart, but not your spirit. Collective guilt with your food porn, any one ?

With themes of "the wrong time" and family priorities, "Mammoth" follows two families and their struggles to create normalcy, better lives for their children, and connections that mean something. While they see points of clarity, we are unsure if it is enough to help them become better parents or better providers. The struggle to survive means something different to each person, and this film shows nicely the continuum of struggles found around the world.

Mammoth may be less thrilling than the oryginal Babel but still the movie is so true you want to indulge in every single moment of it. Spellbinding.

This film parallels similar themes that were shown in Babel with the contrast between a wealthy NY couple and their nanny who is struggling to support her family in the Philippines. I feel more sympathetic for the wealthy couple who strive to 'get to the top' but are missing out on all that really matters. They have no spare time to spend with each other or nourish their relationship with their daughter. At least the nanny is establishing a bond with their child, even though her own children sit at home waiting for her to return.

The problem with this film, though it tried to touch several subjects; morals, ethics, socio economics, cultures, it never seems to walk trough entirely on every subject it raises. It simply brings it up and drops it, before starting on the next, so in the end you are just left hanging with unresolved issues that Writer/Director doesn't seem to want to explore. So why bring them up at all?

About 2 hours too long.

Beautiful intertwined stories of love, family and sacrifice with some heartfelt performance. The film is really sad and depressing sometimes I have to admit, but it had to be so to present the gruesome reality and the upside-down priorities that some families set for themselves.

A movie for a global world about the personal inconsistencies and nonesenses it often offers. There are several good points in it which deserver to be watched.

A magnificent, hantung, beautiful masterpiece. Unmissable, sublime...sheer poetry on screen. It may not always make sense to those who do not travel, but to anyone else it captures the tyranny of distance beautifully.

Nov 7, 2012

Another film about how self-absorbed wealthy Westerners mess up the lives of people in the developing world.

Oct 15, 2012

Avoid at ALL COSTS, unless you want to get preached at for over two long, dragged-out hours. One message that this painfully didactic film browbeats the audience with is that "if parents have careers and can't spend time bonding with their children, their children might get killed or stop loving their parents." Such a message is an obnoxious insult to parents who are not financially independent and cannot afford to quit their jobs.

Amazing. A tragic film with powerful perspective. Great performances by the actors, but the story is what makes this film so great. Don't miss it.
