Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Reviews
Kinky, cleverly constructed, and featuring against-type performances from three of classic Hollywood’s biggest names...
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jul 17, 2023
Essentially a prestige MGM monster movie, but the final product feels almost too polished and too afraid is its own genre to be any fun
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jun 15, 2022
Ingrid Bergman is superb, but inconsistencies in Jekyll’s character work against the film’s total success.

For the third time, Hollywood has defamed Robert Louis Stevenson.

Despite the major stars populating what was once a mere horror shocker, the additives of lengthier sequences of torment and drama slow down the momentum.

If you mess with perfection, you end up with the beast.

Conventions of the time did not allow director Victor Fleming to examine the powerful sexual undertones of Stevenson's tale, robbing the film of much of its potential insight
| Original Score: 66/100 | Aug 2, 2010
MGM gave the familiar story the big-budget, big-star treatment, but in the process drained it of all of its biting social and psychological implications.

Quite eerie classic thriller with Tracy surprisingly good in title role(s).

Well shot by Joseph Ruttenberg, and the transformations are effectively handled, but it's generally shallow and anaemic.

The entire effort was misconceived, one that offers more ham than steak.

Less an outright horror film than its predecessor and more a straightforward psychological study. Most of the earlier sex is replaced by a stubborn, straightlaced morality.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Dec 30, 2003
Botched remake of the 1931 classic.

The story behind the film (nobody was allowed to see pictures of Tracy transformed prior to release) is more interesting than the film itself, but it's still hard to go wrong with a cast like this.

A little Freudian theory is a dangerous thing. It can make a piece of errant hokum dizzy with significance.
