The Fly Reviews

Oct 11, 2024

I remember watching this when I was like 10 years old while staying at a friend's house. That was many decades ago, but this movie is still seared to my memory. I especially remember Vincent Price.

This is one of the all time greats

Having never heard that Cronenberg's The Fly was a remake, I did not expect the original to come close to the quality of the '86 film. I could not have been more wrong. Stripping the grotesque horror that the remake is known for, the original instead focuses on the family and more psychological aspects. The story takes things in a different direction, while still keeping an uncomfortable layer around it all. The cast do a delightfully decent job, but the stage-play-esque acting of the 50's is ever present. The story is told in mostly flashback form, which at points makes you forget that you're in a flashback, as the main story doesn't have the best elements of the film. The visual effects are stunning for the time and hold up, even today. The original sowed creepy seeds which bloomed way beyond expectations, but the charm of The Fly still stands tall.

The original fly is really shattering nightmare of 50's horror film is really really creepy by the make-up design and the last climax well make your skin crawl.

A brilliant & smart sci fi horror mystery from start to that wild ending. Definitely a classic though I wanted more Vincet Price. 🍿🍿🍿🍿1/2

A tragic tale of horror and science fiction, both on the front of the scientist seeking knowledge and using it as a last resort to escape an inescapable fate, and on the front of the relationship with the loved one, against the backdrop of the gentle care they both try to give to each other.

It's a good 1950's horror film!

Ain't gonna lie, I found this more unsettling to watch than the 80's Jeff Goldblum one. Despite a few cheesy 50's cliches and the daftness of the fly head piece, it is shockingly bloody for its time and the scene with the spider web has not lost its power to horrify.

I rated this movie by accident, I thought it was The Fly (1986), so if you're reading this review just don't pay attention.

Funny, original, and scary enough for adults like me; LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The colours don't look quite right, a slight red cast and oversaturated. Otherwise fine. There was a cool sounding bit with a cat. I won't spoil it. Mostly standard procedure otherwise. This is very different to the remake. In some ways more interesting and in some ways worse. The acting is wooden and far less inspired. It is less visceral and more thoughtful. Much better than I was expecting.

A classic I saw in theater when first came out. DAVID HEDISON as the scientist turning fly. VINCENT PRICE as a good scientist. Classic line I have often used myself: "Help meee! HELP MEEEE !" Saw again on 온라인카지노추천 10.17.2021

I spent longer than I'd care to admit thinking that the female lead in this film, Patricia Owens, was actually Judy Garland. The similarities in the face are uncanny. It's easy to give The Fly a favorable review as a piece of body horror, with its straightforward premise and sharp willingness to contrast an idyllic '50s suburban household with stark transhumanist fear. Seeing a perfect existence shattered by such an unfathomable but painfully empathetic fear (watching yourself lose control) is a compelling plot for a horror film; the problem is just how much of the runtime is needed to set up that charmed existence - a seemingly endless melodrama of domestic 'conflict' between two people whose relationship feels painfully artificial. The film depends far too much on the (admittedly powerful) reveal of the titular monster, accomplished with a few convincing but only momentarily effective prosthetics; seeing Hedison halfheartedly struggle with his fly-arm is a poor way to maintain the initial suspense. I like the idea that the supernatural events of the film didn't actually take place, and Owens' Hélène just killed her husband in a run-of-the-mill murder, spinning a ridiculous story to cover up the fact. And props to Vincent Price for totally standing by an not helping while his brother gets killed by a spider; I literally don't understand why he doesn't help in that later scene. (3/5)

I loved the movie, a fun film.

I am no expert but I know what I like. Vincent is a goose bumps generating character at the best of times but it seems that he absolutely love this type cast in thrillers. The last part of the movie is the BEST !

"Help me! Help me!" — me, trying to make it through the narrative slog to the kaleidoscopic climactic reveal in the final 10 minutes. B-movie? More like Fly-movie!

I recall a friend lending me a B/W copy of this infamous movie way back. I also seem to recall it may have been banned in Australia for some horror elements? (eloquently done by today's standards). So when I saw an ad for a re-mastered DVD in vivid color, it just had to be ordered. I suppose it had to be expected that a story like this, made in 1958, might just not hold up too well over the years. This outrageous story was given a lush 20th Century Fox production (complete with a ballet scene!) and also made a lot of money – it had an interesting original story and a neat screenplay by Australian novelist and filmmaker James Clavell - but our understanding of the science and movie making styles have simply changed so much! What was left of the memory of its story has sadly become somewhat laughable. The print transfer to DVD is nothing short of a visual delight, with lovely color, clear images and sound, but oh the acting (except Herbert Marshall) and situations now probably make it a must for the send-up buffs. Patricia Owens is pretty but no great actress and the eloquently voiced Vincent Price looks uncomfortable and hammy in his co-star part. The disc has been treated to a commentary which must rate as one of the worst of its type. Perhaps some things are best left to memory... BUT have to admit, the final scene of the fly in the garden still has a chilling impact! View at your own peril.

Both unnerving and ridiculous ether way you can't look away.
