The Hills Have Eyes Reviews
Iconic 70s drive-in horror epic from Wes Craven, is a bloody-vicious family feud!..Between the rich city-folks from Ohio and the desperate mutant mountainmen from New Mexico...So it's the House of Clark vs House of Jupiter; and the Ohioans vs the "Romans"...Class conflict at its best and most ferocious...As the Clarks voyage across country to their luxury vacation resort in San Diego in their mighty Range Roving Winnebago....On the occasion of Doug Senior and Ethel's Silver anniversary...But then are waylaid by the psychotic cannibalistic "Romans"; who viciously overtake them, and then battle them to the death over precious resources...Their women; and the Clark's baby...And in many ways this is an extension of Texas Chainsaw Massacre; but aging up all the characters and making it about TWO FAMILIES battling makes it thrilling in ways that the earlier movie wasn't! It's positively GAME OF THRONES! And the dirt cheap production values and the cheesy 70s Cucamonga conga sound track does get distracting...But Craven still conjures up enough compelling craziness here, and memorable, disturbing imagery and thrilling suspense set pieces to keep us entertained. So this is recommended.
While the original two get overshadowed by the remakes I can kind of see why as the stakes aren't high and it's just more slow paced.
Boring and rubbish. This movie was not scary at all.
Super Family Friendly! Watched this with my girls and they absolutely ADORED it! I recommend for family movie nights, get that popcorn ready ladies! An amazing heartwarming coming-of-age film both the kids and teens will enjoy.
Plunging it’s comfortable middle-class family into becoming barbarians to protect everyone they love. Wes Craven’s Hills Have Eyes manages to be a key movie shaping horror for decades to come and a brutal illustration of the enduring human spirit. It asks us what we would be willing to become to protect the ones we love.
This is so close to being good. The setup is simple and interesting, it builds tension pretty well, the villians are pretty cool, and overall it's half decently made all around. It defintely has trappings of a exploitation flick though. Some of the actors including the teens aren't the best thing in the world and the older ones are the best ones but there killed off so the acting quality goes downhill. It also gets a bit jumpy between rescuing the baby and trying to call for help. It inturrupts the tension honestly. The low budget feel defintely works in it's favor though overall. I's kind of weird how you'd think there would be more gore iin this but honestly it's pretty tame despite being loaded with violence. It can be a borderline low budget action flick at times. This just needed some better acting, a bit more focus in the script towards the second half, and a bit more suspense. This is a candidate for a remake for sure. If your a hardcore fan of Wes Craven than consider checking this out or hardcore 70's exploitation horror fans.

Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes is really disturbing nasty and violent then Last House but Wes did really great work for building up the suspense and violent scenes to shock the audience and Michael Barryman is truly frightening character on film and the cinematography looks like was made for porn but it really does have grindhouse style for people who knew 42nd street or at the drive-in theater.
The second feature film from horror legend Wes Craven, The Hills Have Eyes lacks the controversial reputation of The Last House On The Left or the mass appeal of A Nightmare On Elm Street, existing in a bizarre middle ground in his filmography. It's nevertheless managed to gain a cult following because of its compelling story and the sense of fear and dread it successfully manifests. Owing a lot to films like Deliverance and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the film follows a group of city folk becoming stranded in remote Nevada and falling prey to a family of depraved cannibals. It explore themes of backwoods savagery and how easily a civilised person can become unstuck when their circumstances turn ugly. Craven incorporates lot of black humour into the story, mostly through his screenplay, full of weird dialogue and odd line deliveries, but when things start getting serious, you really feel a shift in the tone and pace. It's a mostly bloodless film that relies more on threat and menace for its scares than gore and gratuity, a lesson that modern horror filmmakers have still largely failed to learn, and while the fight sequences are often shot so close as to be nearly unseeable, I guess when you work on a minimal budget you don't have the luxury of proper fight choreography. All in all, it doesn't rank among my favourite horror films, but it's certainly one I'd recommend to fans of the genre, and if you have an hour and a half to spare, then I'd say it's more than worth the time.
This one took me for a ride. Wes Craven is hit or miss for me. The first half of the movie I was having a hard time due to mediocre acting and offensive and stereotypical antagonists and mostly unlikeable protagonists. At some point though I started to get emotionally invested and was really on the edge of my seat. I loved seeing the family fight back and be resourceful. I also love Ruby and the dog and they kinda stole the show for me
Watch it if you get a chance.
Wes Craven excels at having a naturalistic grit in his older films, which lends to the brutal subject matter. Like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, there's a feeling of finding a video of something real and grotesque. However, the film could've been tightened in the middle.
For a small budget and creepy premise, this early Craven film does pretty well. On the other hand, it is undoubtably dated and the rewatchability factor is almost nonexistent. The pacing is very hot and cold, with sequences being very tense and others being very boring. One to see if you’re a fan of classic horror…but all else can skip it
The original hills have eyes is very violent then last house of the left and it has echo to mad max and Texas Chainsaw Massacre but the hills have eyes it maybe uncomfortable with family members and dog loving pets but is definitely a grindhouse explotaied film to experience.
1001 movies to see before you die. Despite it not being my cuppa tea, it still has its moments of originality that I respect. It was also laughable and besides the shock value, was not really scary. It was on Tubi.
The Hills Have Eyes is one of the Wes Craven's finest film. The movie is well balanced. You will never get bored whilst watching as it draws you in and won't let go. It makes you feel a lot of mixed emotions such as sadness, tension, anger etc. Many people complain about movie quality but it's 1977 movie and the quality totally matches with the plot of movie and helps making movie more creepy. Overall, horror fans will surely love this movie and non-horror fans will also love it.
What the flip? That's it. What an Abrupt ending. It felt like a waste of time. I wanted it to hurry it up and man these characters are so unlikeable. Not a fan. I liked the idea of these desert wanderers stealing stuff but they could've been more violent. Maybe because of the times this movie couldn't do it the crazy way but it felt like wasted potential. Hopefully they've already made a remake of this so maybe it'll be better but with remakes in general I highly doubt it. At least Wes craven got to make a good movie later aka scream and nightmare.
