Moby Dick Reviews
Too often, John Huston offers us, instead of creatures made of flesh and blood, only colorless beings who come onto the screen to deliver one or two aphorisms before going out of focus.

Director John Huston and screenwriter Ray Bradbury teamed up (and feuded aplenty) to wrestle Herman Melville’s literary classic Moby-Dick to the screen, with results both fascinating and flawed.

…a neglected masterpiece…
| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 30, 2022
Huston's Moby Dick, though, is finally not unworthy of its source. While so many adapted films of literary masterpieces are little more than perfunctory plot summaries, the failure of this one owes nothing to oversimplification or stupidity.

Herman Melville's famous novel about a satanic superwhale has been turned into a strong and eye-filling movie by John Huston, although the mystic overtones in the story are still far from easy to interpret.

Huston's take on the Great American Novel is surprisingly light on its feat - a thrilling portrait of single-minded obsession that still resonates today.

[T]he film was not well received in 1956, much of the criticism leveled at Peck, but his stylized performance is more interesting 60 years later. Huston's treatment is equally compelling.

One could have plenty of quarrels with this as an adaptation of the Herman Melville novel, but it's still one of the better John Huston films of the 50s.

John Huston gives a passionate and faithful rendering of Herman Melville's novel in Moby Dick, aided by a stellar cast.

John Huston's long-cherished adaptation of Herman Melville's novel has some wonderful scenes but must be counted as a noble failure.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 5, 2011
The film takes flight as a grand chase movie, and leaves its ambition in its wake.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 5, 2011
Even if it is Melville-lite, Moby Dick is a rousing, beautifully conceived old-school production.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Oct 8, 2010
Huston uses his great filmmaking skills to keep things mostly on course.
| Original Score: B+ | Jun 25, 2008
Moby Dick is interesting more often than exciting, faithful to the time and text more than great theatrical entertainment.
| Jun 2, 2008
A rolling and thundering color film that is herewith devoutly recommended as one of the great motion pictures of our times.
