Short Circuit Reviews

Mar 18, 2025

This was an absolute masterpiece, how dare anyone give it less than 4 stars. What a classic, wonderful story. Have you witnessed the BS Hollywood spews out these days?

I loved this as a child. So my child self is giving it a very high rating.

Love, love, love this! AI and robotics in an intelligent, funny, warm, and nerdy sci-fi hosted by some of the top acting talent of its era. It plays just as well now as it did when I first watched it decades ago.

I first watched Short Circuit with my child. We have since watched it together when he was a teenager. Both times we said it is one of a few classic kids movies. I recently watched it again and enjoyed the pure fun of the story. There may be only one exception as a child’s movie: swearing. I ignored the profanity the first time I saw it. I asked my child if it was noticed, but it wasn’t. Children don’t perceive the few times profanity was used because the delivery was swift and not material to the dialog. Just one more thing, for today’s overly sensitive audiences they might perceive a couple of “politically incorrect” items that could offend, but still funny, even campy. The anamatronics and puppetry in the movie is exceptional. It makes you believe that the robot is alive. To an adult in 2024, it might sometimes look a little cartoonish, but to me it sets the story in a simpler time when plots relied on solid story lines and not glitzy CG special effects. Think of Starwars with all the rubber puppets and the shaky speeder. I believe that if this movie were remade using CG, it would flop. I will keep this movie in my collection to watch again.

This movie is awesome. Just the work they did with the robots alone is worth more than the 5 stars.

For me, this character is above wall e. A good family friendly holiday movie.

Johnny number 5 is the best character in a movie about a sentient robot! Who is only sentient after a lightning strike hits him! They don't make films like this anymore! Hollywood seems to be out of new ideas! Bring back the 70's,80's and 90's film makers! We miss those people!

Absolute classic. From start to finish

A movie which was very much of its era. The cast do well, Johnny Five is very likeable and manages to both generate empathy and raise some laughs. The movie on the whole is good natured and endearing if a little predictable (it was primarily a family movie afterall). There's some racial stereotyping that might furrow the woke brigade eyebrows but this not withstanding it's still well worth a watch for those in a nostalgic or whimsical mood. A product of a simpler time but that's no bad thing in my book.

These reviews are bogus both movies were great. So many movies after this one wish they could create this magic.

I know people were expecting this movie to be as good as it was when they were kids but it's really hard to turn back the clock. Fortunately I can do that because I'm not overly critical about a movie made back in the 80s. It's as good to watch today as the first time I watched it.

Another great Sci-Fi movie, like they don't do them anymore.

How could anyone not like this. I did when I was a kid and it's still fantastic

Cute movie with a likable robot. Though it almost feels like Stephanie would have got with Number 5. If Steve Gutenberg wasn’t her love interest lol. Fisher Stevens as an Arab was controversial. Yet some critics who knocked that, like the sequel more. That stars Stevens.

Great movie ...............

Hey laser lips, your momma was a snowblower That was probably the funniest thing I’ve ever heard a robot say. Short Circuit is full of 80s greatness and Number Five is still one of the best “robots” out there.

Ok, already an interesting start. These robots are built for combat, they're war-ready with explosive lasers and an aluminum exterior. I was not expecting the movie to start out on such a stark note. That's some pretty impressive robotic practical effects. Wow, the robotic movements that they were able to pull off are actually impressive, they're fluid and smooth. The premise is kind of silly, definitely 80's, but the whole theme of war and its messages are interesting. Ahh, the good ole 80's where you could have a bunch of curse words throughout the movie and still receive a PG rating. Good times, good times lol. I think it's wholesome how instead of the robot going on a rampage killing everything when it goes rogue, it turned into a sweet curious robot with human emotions. Kind of cheesy, but cute. I laughed so hard when the robot was falling and it pulled the parachute and said "weeee!". I couldn't stop laughing, that was so ridiculous and funny lol. Oh cool, the quiet weird girl from Breakfast Club! That was oddly convenient how #5 was able to just press the button on the other robots and turn them off, kind of silly. This movie's silly but in the best way. It's genuinely funny, I was laughing really hard and uncontrollably at times. The movie's so ridiculous but at least it's hilarious. I think they nailed the robots voice, it fits his wacky personality perfectly. Some of the humor is actually witty and clever. The movie kept surprising me at every turn. It's actually a fun watch. There's so many randomly funny moments that happen out of nowhere throughout the movie that honestly I think make the movie. The whole thing's almost cartoony, and it works. I don't think they could've gotten a better cast. Every actor understands the assignment and they're all funny. The delivery of dialogue is all wonderfully comedic. I do think they probably could've casted someone else to play Stephanie but I think Sally did a pretty good job. Cheesy, silly, ridiculous and hilarious. This movie was fun to watch. I thought it was going to be just another mediocre 80's comedy movie, but it surprised me with how entertaining, random and funny it was. I'd watch it again just to have a good laugh.

This movie is phenomenal. Top 20 childhood movie. This and space camp are my favorite Syfi ones. 80’s kid recollection at its finest

It ends up being watchable due to it's condensed runtime and speedy editing. This 80's family film pokes a bit at some ethical themes but never shifts it's narrative into or around said themes. Pretty brainless but harmless and occasionally chuckle-inducing.

I love the movie! I would like a new sequel or a total reboot of the franchise for the times of now!
