Them! Reviews
The genre holds a special place in my heart, and “THEM!” was the quintessential big bug movie.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Aug 25, 2022
Views of the creatures which had the youngsters screeching delightedly are plenty scary -- in fact the blown-up scenes of actual ants, such as everyone in the hot country knows, are enough to make you squirm.

There is added conviction in performance and dialogue, both of which are particularly good for a production largely designed for chilling spines.

Edmund Gwenn is such a convincing old actor that he and his scientific calculations have you actually believing in the 8-feet-high ants bringing terror and destruction in Them!

It moves fast and is superbly silly.

The monsters are certainly a homely change -- 15-foot ants from earth, instead of Outer Space, invaders in tatty fancy-dress. James Whitmore's cop is lively, and Edmund Gwenn's scientist lectures with feeling.

In the parking lot outside the [theater], I came upon a bustling colony of ants near a crack in the sidewalk. I gave them a wide berth. I had just seen their oversized brothers and sisters in action... and I wanted no more trouble with them.

The picture has all the necessary ingredients mixed in the proper proportions to make it a top-notch thriller.

This leads us through Los Angeles sewers; delightful but net serious suspense; audience hysteria (hey, is school out?), and flame throwers guaranteed to scare the wits out of anyone who ever had a hot foot.

Sound and lighting effects help to create an eerie atmosphere in the black-and-white film and Warner Brothers has taken pains to make the enormous ants properly frightening.
| Sep 28, 2021
With ants of such drawing power as these, Warner Bros. might have skimped on cast costs in the production of Them. To its credit, it did nothing of the kind.
| Sep 28, 2021
The implausible idea and the thin story pervade the entire production despite good performances by Edmund Gwenn and James Whitmore.

Under Gordon Douglas high-geared direction, Them emerges as a top science-fiction film, and all performances are tops. Sid Hickox' lensing, art director Stanley Fleischer's sets and film director Thomas Reilly's cutting are all excellent.
| Sep 28, 2021
The mock-scientific approach to the picture often appears rather ludicrous to adult audiences, but there's enough horror and a tense what'll-happen-next feeling to keep everybody's minds mainly on Them.
| Sep 28, 2021
Though Them benefits from a well-motivated script, it suffers from the same hackneyed ingredients that characterize most films of the same genre.
| Sep 28, 2021
Ominously titled Them, this all too plausible Warner Brothers chiller starts with a shiver and ends with a bang.
| Sep 28, 2021
A tense science-fiction thriller, one of the best yet made.
| Sep 28, 2021
The latest in pseudo-scientific horror films, Them!... displays some ingenuity and imagination and is guaranteed to raise a fright wig on every head for the first half, anyway.
| Sep 28, 2021
The result is a picture that shouldn't be missed by anyone who enjoys a good thrill.

The latest science-fiction thriller offers an extra measure of creeps: but. like the best of its breed, it's told in a crisp, matter-of-fact manner.
