The Time Machine Reviews

Was captivating for this young blob. (Yvette Mimieux helped, maybe.)

This is the kind of movie kids in the 60s would stay in the theater and watch all day. Sébastien Cabot, Yvette Mimieux, were mesmerizing .

An all time classic. Intriguing as a young boy and still fun to watch every few years as a middle aged man. Everyone should see it a few times!!!

Great movie! It is a thinking man's sci-fi movie. Yes it's over 60 yrs old , but is very entertaining and well acted with a thought provoking story.

The 1960 version of The Time Machine follows it source material closely and adds a few interesting insights into what the early 20th century actually had in store for the traveler (and what people expected would come from the cold war). However, the removal of social commentary on the class system and the typical 1960s infantilization of women on screen will leave something of a sour taste in the mouths of today's viewers. While Rod Taylor proves himself a decent narrator, Yvette Mimieux was limited to poor character development and the role of the "helpless women" stereotype.

"The Time Machine" written by H.G. Wells is based in the year 1900 and sees an inventor named H. George Wells ( Rod Taylor ) invent a machine capable of moving through time itself. After announcing his invention to his doubting friends he becomes somewhat disillusioned with his current situation and undertakes his first journey into the future. However the utopia he believes he will find is marred by wars and destruction. When he decides he has gone far enough into the future George Wells finds that humans are not what they once were. Written in 1895 HG Wells novel was visionary, combining future evolution with changing technologies  and military might. By 1960 some of the books future history was already known so it's hard, without reading the book, to know what Wells actually predicted and got right. However, Taylor plays Wells so well, that he convincingly gives the audience the hero's perspective of the loss of innocence that came after experiencing wars and the destruction caused by mankind. As Wells moves faster into the future he comes into contact with a pure simplistic civilisation but ruled by cannibalistic mutants.  The age old battle between good and evil seems appropriate but somewhat blurred as both races evolved from humans from Wells time.  Despite some of the special effects being a little dated, the film has some great moments, particularly the ever changing display in the clothes shop window. "The Time Machine" has a number of memorable and unnerving moments that builds a sense of existential dread until it reaches its inevitable conclusion.

It tries what it can to make the scientific and social commentary of the H.G. Wells book watchable and empathetic, but it's easily held back by its production values in several areas.

Wow, very hypnotic and disorienting opening with all the clocks zooming by. A very intriguing premise. Brilliant use of fast forwarding time lapse special effects. It was really cool seeing a snail slither by rapidly and the flowers blooming. That's so cool how he met Filby's son. It's so dark how even back in 1960, they were predicting that in the near future war would still be a relevant thing for man kind. That was horrifying seeing the beginning of the end of the world and how he experienced it at only 1966. Wow, Weena's so cute. It seems that thousands of years into the future, humans don't care to think or even expand their mind. They have no desire to learn or develop. Basically reduced to mindless cattle. So ominous how the humans were basically bred by the Morlocks. They are the ones who clothe and feed the humans now, they are their rulers. So crazy how they're indoctrinated and brainwashed by the sirens. They still believe they have to hide underground whenever they hear the sirens, as if it were still 1966. The Morlocks are using the sirens to manipulate the humans. The movie plays out very similarly to how a Twilight episode would. The time-lapse special effects are probably the most standout and impressive aspect about this movie. That and the whole premise along with the creative ideas. I thought it was a very telling story about history and how the past can affect the future in a number of ways. I thought it was a very cleverly and smartly told story. Acting as somewhat of a cautionary tale for humans so that we don't end up as thoughtless sheep. Although I enjoyed the story and its premise, I don't think I'd watch it again.

There have been plenty of adaptions of H.G. Wells novel — a 1949 BBC made for 온라인카지노추천 movie, the 1978 made for 온라인카지노추천 movie and the 2002 film — but the best one is George Pal's 1960 special effects-heavy opus, which takes H. George Wells (Rod Taylor) from January 5, 1900 to September 13, 1917; June 19, 1940; August 18, 1966 and October 12, 802,701. The deeper he goes into the timestream, the worse off humanity is, especially in the future when the highly evolved Eloi and the deeply devolved Morlocks are all that is left. Yvette Mimieux plays one of the Eloi that our hero falls for. This was her first feature film — Platinum High School was released first, but this was filmed before that — and MGM put her under contract. Her career took to 온라인카지노추천, American-International Pictures and plenty of fun roles in movies we love like The Black Hole, Jackson County Jail, Snowbeast and Devil Dog: Hound of Hell before retiring in 1992. Yet the real star of this movie are the effects, like the actual time machine that was created by Bill Ferrari and built by Wah Chang, who also designed the Morlocks. Made for around $1 million dollars — the costumes from Forbidden Planet got reused and man, those must have been pretty sweaty when you consider how many movies used them — and filled with matte paintings, stop-motion and optical wizardry by Gene Warren and Tim Baar, this movie obviously won the Academy Award for Best Special Effects. If you're a fan of this movie, I recommend tracking down Time Machine: The Journey Back. Produced in 1993 for PBS stations to tie-in with the Back to the Future sequels, the first segment is all abut the making of the George Pal movie, including Gene Warren giving a rare on-air interview in which he discussed creating the special effects, along with comments from Wah Chang in which he reveals how the Time Machine itself was made. However, that's just the start, because the third part of this features a cannon sequel to the original film, written by the original screenwriter David Duncan. A now older George (Rod Taylor looks great!) goes to find his friend Filby (Alan Young) just before the start of World War I. George knows that his friend will die on May 15, 1916 and tries to get him to travel with him and Weena through time. He refuses and George thinks that he'll try again, because he loves his friend. Man, just writing about this — much less watching it — makes tears drop from my eyes. That's how much this movie means to me. This ends with Walter Kemp (Whit Bissell in his last role) showing up in 1932, wondering whatever happened to his inventor friend. Ah man! I didn't even mention how much I love Sebastian Cabot in this movie!

Far superior to the modern version. Rod taylor is great as the time traveller. Great special effects that still look good today.

George Pal's The Time Machine has its moments but more often than not comes across as a great idea that never fully comes to fruition. Based on the HG Wells classic novel, it tells the story of inventor George Wells, who hopscotches his way into the future, starting with some minor jumps that land him at the time of the World Wars, as well as a stop in the turbulent 60s. Things get weird when he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic 802,701, where zombie-like humans are used as a food source for the dominant Morlocks. The first few stops on the journey are interesting, but the final destination, despite some cool sets, just gets silly and drags on for far too long. The whole thing is a mildly pleasant but ultimately forgettable experience.

Watching this movie back again recently with the Blu ray remaster was beautiful yet it had me wishing for the gritty VHS edition. As you would expect with a blu ray remaster it will Have all the bells and whistles to blow you away. Yes, it has lots bright colours clear scenes and lovely sound however I couldn't help but miss the original not so filtered version. It somehow loses the nostalgic gritty vibe, when you first encounter the warlocks and the dark caves of which they dwell, it creates more atmosphere with it being hard to see and more impactful when the first torch is lit. I am stuck between two versions of this movie where in one sense I love the crystal clear scenes where he flows through time and the animations do there wonders yet taken out out of the moment in the too bright and sharpened dramatic scenes. Overall this doesn't matter to you guys reading than review but I would suggest to watch this on VHS or dvd first and experience the full Nostalgia. If that's not your thing then great the beautiful Blu Ray version awaits you also.

As a fan of the 2002 version of ‘The Time Machine' I'd long wanted to see this one. Watching movies from the 1960's set in the upper class is hard for a lot of people to get into, myself included, but once it got to the time travel stuff it got more interesting...and then the Morlocks show up, and they are effectively creepy for a movie made in 1960.

A classic. Great for it's day. An inventor makes a time machine and heads for the future to an unexpected situation.
