Witness Reviews
I think this is one of Harrison Ford’s best movies, along with The Fugitive and Working Girl, not necessarily the Raider and Hans Solo movies he’s best known for. Somehow the differences between two cultures - the Amish farms in the countryside and the city life of a Philadelphia cop - come together in this exciting murder mystery and tale of a romance between a radiant Kelly McGilis and the handsome, charming Harrison Ford. The Vangelis music is another highlight as well as the supporting characters. It’s a movie to enjoy periodically for all the qualities mentioned.
Great funny comedy movie; fun for all ages!
It’s Peter Weir’s directorial debut, I didn’t know he was Australian for so long As it is this understood the English culture and the rural Amish subculture simultaneously being filmed in Lancaster County Works both as a hard boiled thriller as well as a sexy romance 40 years old and this is truly a solid film starring Harrison Ford in one of his finest roles He co-stars with Kelly McGillis, Danny Glover, a young Viggo Mortensen, and Lukas Haas It molds together Philadelphia and Amish culture but also understanding how they differ After the funeral of Rachel Lapp’s husband she only has her father and her son, Samuel They decide to take a trip to Baltimore but at the train station Samuel witnesses a murder taking place in a bathroom Philadelphia police officer John Book is assigned to the case wondering if Samuel can identify one of the culprits It turns out to be a narcotics officer involving $22 million dollars worth of product of illegal drugs Unfortunately the dirty officer tries to kill John and locate the boy so John decides to take him into protective custody along with his mother into their Amish home John spends time with Rachel and Samuel and starts to grow attached to their community and way of life Rachel even acknowledges the way tourists stare at them making them seem quaint but it is their way given its a religious community living by non violence Now it’ll be harder to one day say goodbye to all of it since they share an essence The movie is very solid in every way; the direction, the synthesizer score, the actors, the romance, and the melding of two genres Granted when this opened it was on the heels of a controversy from scholars, the community, and even tourism officials saying there was misrepresentation and exploiting Yet this keeps enough authenticity as far as the collective ness of its peoples putting those views on the back burner since the film was met with great recognition even earning 8 academy award nominations winning best original screenplay and best film editing One of my father’s favorites growing up as well as my own ‘Witness’ still managed to portray the Amish community in a positive light with such insight despite all the naysayers with such understated human emotion in a crime thriller therefore it holds up greatly to this day
Witness is a true masterpiece of crime cinema is really a edge of your seat thrills and exciting and really powerful performance by Harrison Ford we've love his performance in Indiana Jones and Han Solo but this is Harrison's true acting career and really marvelous screenplay about two worlds and to experience their culture and understanding the people of Amish.
Unusual setting, great story and performances.
Deeply satisfying crime drama set in Pennsylvania's Amish country. Worlds collide, tensions mount, and contrasts abound as the audience waits to see if John Book (Ford) and Rachel Lapp (McGillis) consummate their growing romance as their hunters draw near.
Ford should've won an oscar here for his performance as John Book. It's simply one of Harrison's career tour de force performances. I think Witness is one of the best Harrison Ford movies you'll ever see. It just happens to be one of those rare movies that i'd like to watch once a year on Ford's birthday
It's a very enjoyable movie with great acting and storyline. It's definitely worth the watch.
An example of cinematic storytelling at its finest. Each scene is important to the narrative which is a marvellous mix of cultural clash, crime thriller and unrequited love. One you can watch many times.
Let me start by saying that John Book is a terrible name for a character. Like laughably bad. Now that we have that out of the way, I really thought this was going to be a dirty cop movie, which it was for all of about 10 minutes. What we got instead was a forbidden romance from afar, mixed with a day in the life of the Amish flick. When 20 minutes of the runtime is dedicated to watching Harrison Ford recover from a gunshot wound, you know the movie's in trouble. It had brief moments of charm, and Harrison Ford did an okay job with what he was given, but I ultimately found the plot and characters to be uninteresting.
En virkelig god og spænende film om en anden kultur. Historien er godt fortalt og man kan virkelig leve sig ind i den. Ud over det er skuespillet også helt i top.
The first half of this film is a decent story. The set up with the mystery along with the juxtaposition of the AMish in the big city, was interesting. When the investigation begins, the story was still interesting and the movie made sense. As soon as the plot bring sus back to the Amish settlement, however, the movie goes off the rails. Almost nothing happens from that point on in the movie. There are a lot of long scenes, with characters staring at each other or the scenery. The climax is poorly done and over acted in places. I found the villains to be two dimensional. Overall, not a good movie.
Wow… 93%?! Hmmmm… It is nice seeing a gentle, sympathetic and emotionally relatable performance from HF, for sure, but that doesn't make it standout or exceptional. The story itself is unusual, but its premise is not. Ultimately, it is entertaining, but not thrilling, and it is predictable
Ford is very good but the romance, complete with that awful "exposure" scene, is so unconvincing that I've never been inclined to like this movie all that much.
Classic Harrison Ford. Really interesting premise and I loved the use of the Amish community, good movie.
This brilliant piece of story telling of the Amish and a Philadelphia cop is beautiful and so well done. Harrison Fords best movie imo and Kelly McGillis is excellent.
This movie was an intriguing thriller. Sure, it's not the fastest or most exciting film, but I liked it. It was very unique and interesting.
WITNESS. In my library. Watch it once year. Restores my faith in people. Even those who are different from ‘my' people. Nicely done from beginning to end. Older movie. So am I. 89 now. I remember when I was younger and more interesting to be around. Strange. As you grow older, you continue to see yourself …in your heart… just as exciting and popular as you were then. So, I call up current pictures of these earlier beautiful women and handsome men. Even at my age, I'm still -everywhere except in the mirror, which lies- attractive. Somehow, in the mirror I see a different, older me. Kelly McGillis will always be beautiful. Harrison Ford will always be the guy I admired. Counting the days until I watch this again. I would have kissed her when they were dancing. And held at her forever. Remember…this is only a review. Well worth two hours of your time.
So many genres mixed into one, although I must admit I am more shallow than Peter Weir and would have gone with a different ending.
A fantastic movie with a fantastic performance from Harrison Ford
