The Phantom Reviews
Campy fun, if not much else. They really committed to that Phantom costume.
The Phantom: A Nostalgic Reflection -- Growing up, The Phantom was more than just a cartoon hero; he was a symbol of adventure and mystery that captivated my young imagination. The character’s unique blend of bravery and intrigue made him a standout figure in the world of animated heroes. It’s a shame that Hollywood never revisited this iconic character in subsequent films. The potential for a modern adaptation, with today’s advanced cinematic technology, could have brought The Phantom’s thrilling escapades to life in a way that would resonate with both nostalgic fans and new audiences alike.
Loved the movie as a child. Watching now with my kids, still enjoy it. Someone should remake it.
An under-rated little superhero film. For people who enjoyed films like the Shadow. The under-rated Billy Zane does a fine job and even pulls off that all purple outfit. You also have the late Treat Williams having fun hamming it up as the villain. The Phantom isn't the best movie you'll see. I did always find it to be fun though.
Idc what anyone says about it, I absolutely love ‘The Phantom'! It's a fantastic adventure/superhero movie, released at a time (1996) before there were more than a handful of superhero movies, and a only a couple of these were worth a damn. Simon Wincer's direction is solid, the script written by Jeffery Boam (who also wrote the screenplay for ‘Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade', among many others!) is sound, the action sequences are rousing, the scenery is beautiful (in both the jungle & 1930's New York City)! Billy Zane is perfectly cast as our protagonist Kit Walker/The Phantom, and Kristy Swanson & Catherine Zeta-Jones (her 1st film appearance!) make vivid impressions, as well! Highly recommended! B+
I watch the phantom 1996 since 5 years ago, and it was alright, And i like the other parts besides the truck chase by quills and kidnaps the boy.
Over 25 years and it’s not all terrible tbh I remember my dad got the vhs I didn't know it was based on a 1930s comic strip for the longest time Yes it got mixed reception from critics; In my opinion it’s an above average comic book film A young boy named Kit watched his father die at a young age by pirates of The Sengh Brotherhood, he jumped ship and was washed ashore on the island of Bengalla The natives took him in and raised him to be a warrior called The Phantom embued with a powerful skull ring seemingly 400 years later Years later during the 1930s a team of thugs are hunting down the magic skulls of Touganda to track down a great power All of it is financed by Xander Drax residing in New York City to gain that power and use it for their own ends A young woman Diana Palmer is also onto the mystery of the skulls and her childhood friend Kit is also undercover in New York City but she gets kidnapped by Xander’s goons and now as the Phantom he has to save her and stop Drax I love all the actors; Billy Zane, Kristy Swanson (I didn't recognize her), Catherine Zeta-Jones, James Remar, and Treat Williams even if he is a goofy cartoon come to life Zane does come off as one-dimensional though with a less than stellar script The costume is very silly even if it's comics accurate It's got that swashbuckler feel to it still matching the time period of the serials and old school stunts Disappointed at the box office but gained much popularity on home video
Don't listen to these bad reviews on here this is a very entertaining movie, This superhero movie has it all great storyline, good action, Great on track and a little romance :) this movie truly deserve the sequel
Too nostalgic movie, there's no way not to like it.
Truly quite bad. Reputable writer Jeffrey Boam (male) and disposable Aussie 온라인카지노추천 director Simon Wincer (male, also) make this big-screen COMIC BOOK MOVIE about a purple clad avenger with a cool skull logo, a horse and two hand pistols. Known in Australian print media as "the Ghost who Walks", this pulp character is beset by very bad direction (adults mugging and overacting as "cartoons") and endless audio, visual effects, camera and editing flubs. The movie is almost an object lesson in bad film-making, though obviously cost a bit of money as chunks are lifted from action sequences in the Indiana Jones films. The Phantom is, essentially, in the list of forgettable (ie: junk) comic book adaptations of it's era, along with Brenda Starr, Captain America, Roger Corman's Fantastic Four, Dick Tracy and the last two big budget Batman pictures by Joel Schumacher. The character and setting could have created a hit but treatment here is sub-par in many obvious ways.
25 years old and it's still a part of my childhood as my first exposure to the superhero genre I remember my dad got the vhs I didn't know it was based on a 1930s comic strip It got mixed reception from critics at the time It's an above average comic book film in my opinion if not terrific Taking place in the 1930s Kit Walker as a boy was ambushed at sea by the Pirates of the Same Brotherhood, they murdered his father and he washed ashore on a tropical island raised by natives and given the power of the all powerful Skulls of Tuganda Much of his power was imbued in a magical ring supposedly giving him eternal life Years go by and a power hungry tyrant named Xander Drax is after the skulls to wield their awesome magic A woman named Diana Palmer stumbles into her uncles research leading to Drax's intentions tracking down the skulls She gets captured by Kit's old enemy, Quill and ally pilot Sala Kit rescues her as Phantom and discovers what she's onto making his way to New York City Now it's up to Phantom to follow Drax, save Diana, and prevent the dark destruction of the Skulls from being unleashed Standard stuff yes but far from being awful I love all the actors; Billy Zane, Kristy Swanson (I didn't recognize her), Catherine Zeta-Jones, James Remar, and Treat Williams even if he is a goofy cartoon come to life, his performance is so flamboyant yet fun Zane does come off as one-dimensional though with a less than stellar script The costume is very silly even if it's comics accurate It's got that swashbuckler feel to it still matching the time period of the old serials and old school stunts Sadly this disappointed at the box office but gained much popularity on home video Not one of the worst comic book adaptations but still watchable providing those classic thrills
Billy Zane makes a Fine Phantom it's Cheesy, It's 20th Century Superhero Style rather then what we expect now. Its script needs work but it's still alright.
Like The Shadow the filmmakers fail to update the material in any meaningful way and just lay on the cheese.
I remember watching this movie a lot back in the 90's. I had no idea who the Phantom was, or who he was passed on, but I really liked it back then. I would say for the most part it's held up, but it's definitely lacking in a few areas. The Phantom is based on the 1936 comic strips. It definitely has the feel of an old timey pulpy kind of comic and I'd say for the most part it hits the mark here. The movie is pretty simple and I actually think it runs a bit too short (20 more minutes would have been the sweet spot). Here we follow The Phantom (Billy Zane) who's real name is Kit Walker. Kit has taken over the mantle of The Phantom when his father dies and they explain a bit about the history of the Phantom (he's basically a hero that fights for the good of the people, etc). They kinda just gloss over this and truthfully this is where I wish they would have gone more into the backstory. An origin story here would have probably benefitted this movie (and maybe if it hadn't tanked the planned two sequels would have come out). Anyways, Kit is on the hunt of a man named Quill (James Remar) who killed Kit's dad and has also collected a rare skull that when paired with two other rare ones can give the user the power of the sun. Quill is working for a man named Xander Drax (Treat Williams) and then of course since this is based on a 1930's comic strip Kit's old girlfriend Diana (Kristy Swanson) is thrown into the plot and there's even another possible love interest here with Xander's cronie Sala (Catherine Zeta-Jones). The action is decent, but doesn't compare to anything modern audiences would say is action super hero type. The film is very light on plot and I think that's were it suffers. Yeah The Phantom looks cool, but I never really cared about him for the most part. Zane does his best here with what they gave him, but ultimately this is a forgettable film that lets face it I wouldn't be shocked they try and rebooting in the near future (I personally think it could work with the right lead and director). If you want to take a trip down memory lane take a look at it on Amazon Prime.
this movie deserves more love.
I remember my dad took me to see this as a kid. Even then I knew it was a stinker and still is a stinker.
Not bad considering its based in the 30's and made in the 90's..I think it's better than Batman and Robin. It's time we rebooted the character and maybe the remainder of the defenders.
What kind of idiot wanted to make a movie about The Phantom?
If you are just searching for a fun pulpy, campy Indiana Jones-esque adventure, The Phantom is entertaining enough for what it is. But for anyone expecting this to be an underrated superhero movie that had the misfortune of being overshadowed by the Batman movies of the time, The Phantom is...not that. It's tolerable enough but the hero is one-dimensional and uninteresting, the fight scenes are fairly standard and run-of-the-mill and there's a prologue that until the end is forgettable and has little effect on the plot. There are far worse movies out there but as far as superhero movies go, The Phantom unfortunately fails to stand out.
