I’m a big fan of House on Haunted Hill (1959), so I was interested to see what they’d done with the story 40 years later. As it turns out, they kind of messed things up. House on Haunted Hill (1999) has some creepy visual effects, but this movie fumbled the ball when it came to story, dialogue, and characters. For example, I like Famke Janssen, but I found her to be highly irritating as Evelyn. And I also expected more from Geoffrey Rush as Stephen Price. While I don’t think that House on Haunted Hill (1999) was a complete waste of time, I think I’ll just stick to watching Vincent Price’s version.

25 years old and this was one of the earliest horror movies I ever watched as a kid It’s the first horror film I saw before the new millennium This was Dark Castle Entertainment’s first of many horror movies An updated version of the 1959 original this one focuses on a haunted house with deadly results directed by William Malone and produced by Robert Zemeckis and Joel Silver Starring Famke Janssen, Geoffrey Rush, Ali Larter, Taye Diggs, Brigette Wilson-Sampras, Peter Gallagher, and Chris Kattan This centers on amusement park mogul Stephen Price (a reference to Vincent Price) and his conniving wife Evelyn October 11th, 1931 Los Angeles The Vannacutt Psychiatric Institute for the Criminally Insane fell apart to chaos, murder, ruin, and decay when all the patients rioted and killed all the working staff members Dr. Richard Benjamin Vannacutt specialized in mass murder and horrific surgery on his patients becoming one of the most mass serial killers of the early 20th century Cut to present day Evelyn wants to throw her birthday party at Haunted Hill but the guest list is removed somehow replacing it with several unknown new ones They arrive at Haunted Hill which is the same psychiatric institute, Mr. Price makes a deal to pay each of them $1 million dollars if they can survive the night but little do they know the house is actually ‘alive’ The ghosts inside these walls are mad not everyone related to the members of Vannacutt’s staff perished so luring these new guests in is the ultimate trap The film doesn’t match up to the original perfectly but I will give credit for putting in a fair amount of chills and such freaky imagery There’s more of a supernatural flair that wasn’t in the original A chilling score by Don Davis adds to the spooky atmosphere The filmmakers also don’t shy away from the amount of blood Rush and Janssen are having so much fun chewing the scenery with their deliciously despicable characters and their raunchy chemistry, they’re always at each others throats being the most interesting dynamic of the entire movie The rest of the cast works being so colorful while being memorable Some good lighting tricks and aggressive camerawork make this house come alive as it were as an actual character next to the humans ones given these ghosts have an agenda in mind This was also my first introduction to Marylyn Manson’s Sweet Dreams song which would become a traditional thing in other Warner Bros. properties If your expectations are low enough it’s very scary In my opinion it’s still a memorable experience being a product of its era yet still timeless with elaborate set pieces, terrifying images of ghosts, and gruesome deaths Heck it set the template for modern horror remakes A truly underrated horror movie to say the least

Cheesy, trashy, campy, glorious fun! Oh how I miss those 90s horror movies! This is the kind of movie that is made for a hung over sunday!

The story is good, and the actors aren't bad, so House on Haunted Hill is at least watchable compared to other low-budget horror movies of the 90s.

Don't understand the low score. The movie was fun and creepy. Only bad thing was the awful cgi.

Really, honestly, the only parts of the film I was interested in and enjoyed was the setting (good atmosphere and really nicely designed, especially the basement level), some of the monster designs (The Shadow especially- the ink-blot inspiration really shines, and looks really cool!) but the story, the characters, and the ending all fall flat. Doesn't help that 90% of the deaths (y'know, the MAIN SOURCE OF SCARES) happen off-screen or are relatively timid. The only exception (I guess- his death is off-screen but it is the most creepy of all of them) was a minor character that shows up for TWO SCENES and he's dead for one of them! Watching this movie once is alright, not watching it at all is better.

It's back to 1999 for 'House on Haunted Hill' which is based on the 1959 film of the same name. SYNOPSIS: 'An amusement park mogul offers a group of diverse people $1,000,000 to spend the night in a haunted house with a horrifying past.' This film was one of the first films I ever owned on DVD and I remember it fueling my love of horror films from the 90s. It takes the concept of the original, which is a fun classic, and does something exciting and new with the concept. The performances are campy at best and where this film does excel is the practical effects which are gooey and horrible. Where the film does fall apart a bit is the ending where the director tries to use CGI effects of the time. But the CGI is absolutely atrocious, like a kids art project. But don't let that put you off. 'House on Haunted Hill' is campy, gory fun. 7/10

This movie's scriptwriting is so utterly and completely bizarre that it almost wraps around to being kind of funny. The plot makes literally zero sense and pingpongs around with no logic or point for about an hour. It's not very scary unless confusing witting makes you shake in your boots. It earns back a star because it ends up being somewhat funny due to just being so bewildering. It's not very scary either but I guess some of the campy spook scenes are kind of alright. Still better than fire in the sky.

I didn't even know this was a remake till years later, so my opinion has no bias. There could've been less CGI & more atmosphere, but the cast did a really good job keeping me engaged with the outlandish premess.

A classic haunted house story that still works with a modern cast. Director William Malone's horror mystery remake House on Haunted Hill (1999) is a lot of fun despite not really being comparable to William Castle's House on Haunted Hill (1959). Malone's direction provides some startling jump scares and bloody horror thrills. It's not as spooky or atmospheric as the original. I wish this was set in a luxurious mansion, but a rusty old, art deco insane asylum doesn't make for a scary haunted house. Many of the weird ghost hauntings are just odd instead of freaky. Producers Robert Zemeckis and Terry Castle wanted a classic remade for modern audiences, but Vincent Price's version is vastly superior and remains entertaining. Writers Robb White Dick Beebe put a ton of sarcastic jokes and creepy scares. The humor gets very awkward. The temptation of a million dollars would be irresistible, but I've always liked the charm of keeping everyone in the house overnight at the birthday party. Setting this in an insane asylum instead of a fancy mansion is sort of weird because it's just a gross setting. Casting directors Laura Kennedy and Kristy Sager managed to get an early 2000's ensemble of entirely unemployed actors and actresses in hindsight. It's amusing seeing all these people again for a lark. Geoffrey Rush is excellent as the Vincent Price inspired villain Steven H. Price. I like his mustache and name as tribute to Vince Prince's amazing original performance from William Castle's 1959 classic House on Haunted Hill. I will say Rush comes across closer to James Woods rather than Vincent Price in his impression. His facial reactions are hilarious. Famke Janssen is lovely as Rush's wife Evelyn Stockard-Price. Her femme fatale energy is amusing, but her performance is ludicrously over the top. Ali Larter is sexy and funny as the executive guest Sara Wolfe. She is easily the best acting performance in House on Haunted Hill with natural acting. I wish the story focused more on her rather than the more obnoxious guests. She actually feels frightened. Taye Diggs is decent as the former basketball player Eddie Baker. His nervousness about being in the house is engaging. Bridgette Wilson is an absolute moron as the dumb blonde "celebrity" Melissa Margaret Marr with her gigantic webcam. Peter Gallagher is calm and collected as the aloof Dr. Donald W. Blackburn, M.D. with his dry wit. Chris Kattan is truly terrible as the overacting and freaked out nut Watson Pritchett. Max Perlich is awful as the guy running security named Carl Schecter. Lisa Loeb is so pretty as the amiable and nervous Channel 3 reporter who Rush scares with a crazy falling elevator. James Marsters is fun opposite Loeb as the frightened Channel 3 cameraman. Peter Graves cameos as himself for the old killer report on Jeffrey Combs' sadistic mental hospital Dr. Richard Benjamin Vannacutt. Editor Anthony Adler does bizarre early 2000's style fast cuts that are so jarring. It's fun and fast paced, but awkwardly stitched together. Cinematographer Rick Bota uses all kinds of bright ambient lighting to illuminate the insane asylum. The framing is neat with pretty interesting angles in every scene. This era of horror certainly had original perspectives. Production designer David F. Klassen creates a rusty and disgusting insane asylum, but this should have been a lavish mansion for the party guests to be haunted in not just a grisly Saw room. Set decorators Lauri Gaffin and David Ladish put in raw and gross hospital props, but it all looks filthy and unpleasant to watch. The practical effects from special effects artists Charles Belardinelli and Gary D. Bierend is amazing. The floor blowing up is so intense. Visual effects artists Michael Shelton, Marc Kolbe, and Paul Taglianetti do really hideous CGI. The way the shadowy ghost moves in darkness is neat as it touches the ground. Composer Don Davis' movie score is alright, but not nearly atmospheric enough to keep you engaged. Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams" cover is far more memorable here as dated as it remains. All the clothes from costume designers Ha Nguyen and Kimberly Guenther Durkin are pretty and flattering on the cast. Makeup artist David Abbott does nice work for the actresses. Hairstylists Diane Pepper and Patricia Vecchio give Ali Larter and Famke gorgeous hair. In all, House on Haunted Hill is a terrible movie, but thoroughly entertaining for what this tacky remake ended up. There's worse movies that waste 93 minutes.

I usually love movies with premises like this, but this one fails in every single thing it sets out to do due to its terrible script, poor acting and lackluster atmosphere. Almost offensively bad from start to finish.

Would rather watch this than the original, sure it feels like a weird arthouse film, but it got some weird moments and good acting from good old Vincent Price himself Geoffroy Rush!

It almost feels like this should be regarded as a guilty pleasure considering how few people talk about this 90s movie. And boy is it a 90s movie, from it's cast (Geoffrey Rush is an effing treasure), to its slightly edgy music video styled editing... but I can't help it, I eat it up.
