Critics Consensus

Though it may not reach for any new artistic heights, The Count of Monte Cristo is an old-fashioned yet enjoyable swashbuckler.

Nell Minow Common Sense Media A thoroughly enjoyable movie for older kids. Rated: 4/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Time Out A preposterous, expansive and self-conscious attempt to resurrect the historical spectacular. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Empire Magazine Rated: 4/5 Feb 2, 2003 Full Review Jeremy Conrad IGN Movies This is an old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure that's just plain fun. Rami A It doesn't get any better than this! Kevin Reynolds' "The Count of Monte Cristo" is a fun, historical drama, that conveys a good story, acting, cast, and pacing. Each act makes it all worth it. Reynolds allows the audience to become invested in all scenes/acts. I cheered every scene. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Philipp N Not realy true to the book (but the core components are in it), but in my opinion it is one of the best versions. Pacing, acting and scenery are great. I enjoyed this one even more than the 2024-version. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/18/25 Full Review tim s Behold France's seminal adventure story and perhaps the greatest revenge tale ever written. The Count of Monte Cristo has all the makings of a good old-fashioned adventure: captivating characters, swordplay, a prison break, and more. My only criticism is that the final confrontation between the hero and villain ought to be longer to better savor the protagonist's years-long thirst for vengeance. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Daniel C. M My favorite historical/adventure/revenge movie of all time. There's really nothing wrong here, aside from the fact it isn't a good ADAPTATION, but it's a great MOVIE by itself. Great action, acting, production value, script, really everything. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Tim M The Count of Monte Cristo brings the classic Alexandre Dumas tale to the 21st century, though some soap opera theatrics dampen the proceedings a bit. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/14/25 Full Review The Wandering D An awesome film that is just so classic and so interesting. The cast does an excellent job with the film and the visuals are spectacular.
