The Count of Monte Cristo Reviews

This is an old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure that's just plain fun.

| Original Score: 8/10 | Nov 27, 2019

...an admittedly irresistible premise for an old-fashioned adventure...

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Nov 20, 2019

Far superior to the 1934 Robert Donat version, like the book itself, the 2002 version of Monte Cristo is certain to become a classic for the ages.

Kevin Reynolds, who hit it big with Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and then met a watery grave in Waterworld, directs this Count with unfussy efficiency. He has a grand villain in Guy Pearce.

A thoroughly enjoyable movie for older kids.

This is visually stunning and a masterpiece.

A preposterous, expansive and self-conscious attempt to resurrect the historical spectacular.

Where Gladiator failed to give an adequate sense of how its hero grew and what he learned during his trials. ... Monte Cristo, on the other hand, takes its time.

| Original Score: B+ | Dec 6, 2004

Strong supporting performances, from Harris in particular, help make up for the uneven performances of the two leads ...

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 7, 2004

You know you're in for a good ol' popcorn-munching time when the movie's tagline is a bad pun on the title of a piece of fine literature.

While many would rightfully question why there is need for another take on Alexander Dumas' treasure, Reynolds has made a decent job of it.

Dumas Lite: Less filling, still tastes pretty good

| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 19, 2003

Apesar de algumas alteraes lamentveis com relao ao livro de Alexandre Dumas, o filme interessante e se beneficia das atuaes de Caviezel e Pearce.

...A straightforward and beautifully accoutered period piece, rife with technical authenticity and eye-pleasing production values.

Dumas would feel insulted that the characters he breathed life into were no more than charicatures prancing across the screen in a period action film.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Jan 29, 2003

... in a marketplace littered with films that studios have unloaded to make a buck or two... "The Count of Monte Cristo" stands out like a treasure chest half-buried in the sand.
