Triangle Reviews
Convoluted at times, but Johnnie To's style manages to pull through at various points. The final moments of the film like a fever dream or a start to a horror film, but the three main casts are interesting and likable.
When the 3 directors made the 3 sections to connect into a complete story, the line cannot be connected, is this expected?
It was a total disaster! The only segment that was worth watching was the final segment directed by Johnnie To!
3/10: A single movie directed by 3 HK directors - Tsui Hark, Ringo Lan abd Johnny To. Direction and story wise was top notch until the final end where it gets comical and ridiculous, which is a shame because it could have turned out better.
The flick is okay, it's a cocktail of not so fresh ingredients. To seems to have choose a cast, put them in a shaker, shaken them all together and waited for the result. A strange triangle came out. Not a must see.
Hark, Lam (his final film) and To combine their efforts for superb directing of this awesome caper. In three half-hour segments each legendary director takes a turn. Temptation. Jealousy. Destiny. To delivers with an amazing ending. Four-bag Monte and Smear the Queer with guns! Great heist film.
Bizarre, and convoluted, exacts its toll on a tired viewer, but results at the same time tantalizing with its almost cabalistic succession of triplets. Mysterious., a puzzle box waiting to be opened, be it your game or not.
I was a bit lost in the story at times, but overall a fun movie. I always dig Ringo Lam & Jonny To in whatever they do.
An interesting trial that 3 different directors are developing the story one-after-another: Hark Tsui set the beginning part of the story with differnt plots and characters that can be further developed, while Ringo Lam further develop the characters of the actors and actresses in the middle part of the story and finally Johnny To set the ending of the story with Johnny's movie style. It can be easily tell which part is developed by which director since their styles are maintained. However, some storyline though set but not developed, while some parts of story are quite weired and not quite integrated. Thus, I am a bit confused and need to trace back to understand what the story is talking about and what message has delivered - "People sometimes are forced to perform something that they may not like when they do not have the choice, but generally, you still have choice to choose if you want to" and "Money gone, people relieve". In summary, it is a good movie with a bit weired story and characters. Among all, I am totally confused by the character twists played by Kelly Lin.
While out for drinks, three buddies are approached by a strange old man who tells them of a treasure which exists underneath the legislative building. If they wish to retrieve it, they can keep the treasure. The men are rather cash strapped so they accept. After retreating the treasure, they find an interwoven golden robe, which dates back to the Ming Dynasty, worth millions. What ensues is a web of deception as the men begin to question if they can trust one an other even after being friends for so many years. I must admit, being that Triangle is a film that is co-directed by three great genre filmmakers in Ringo Lam, Johnnie To, and Hark Tsui I was hoping for more. Not that its a bad film but the action is not nearly as impressive as I would have expected and each of the director's cinematic styles don't particularly mesh all that well together. The script is really overloaded with characters and sub-plots making the film not nearly as focused as it should of been. There are things of merit, like the shootout in the field towards the end, and its a solid action/thriller but I guess the sum doesn't equal the parts.
The film is made unintentionally confusing not only by the twisting plot but by the varied styles of the three cult directors.
the last chapter was hilarious but overall this was quite a disappointment. especially considering the caliber of the 3 directors.
Interesting to have 3 directors do it but I really wasn't feeling it. I usually really dislike Simon Yam's character choices he portrays in movies... He just really creeps me out sometimes. Either the entire plot of Triangle was meaningless or I didn't get anything out of it... The final scene with the light switching put the coffin in the nail. ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz.....
I expected better considering that three of HK's finest directors each had a hand in the movie. Thought the climax was a bit farcical in the restaurant.
The story is nothin special but the films veteran actors sell their characters through a diverse range of body language & timed facial ticks. Your thinking c'mon man that's what acting is but actors Simon Lam, Lam Suet & director Johnnie To have made countless films together and their chemistry carries on strong N palpable. Quite a woven tale of circumstance testing mens resolve to come out unscathed on the other side of trouble. Solid effort by 3 of the easts best feature film artisans.
It had such potential! It's good, good acting and a great story, but it was a bit too slow. Good though!
Three amazing directors manage to tell a rather mundane story as three buddies try to pull of a heist amid various personal turmoils and financial woes. The film is somewhat interesting in the set-up, but falters in the middle segment and never fully recovers once we get into the final reel. A possible rental at best.
