Blind Date Reviews

Sep 19, 2024

One of the saddest films I’ve ever seen, heartbreaking and haunting even. Rarely does a film stick with me like this one has. It’s unfortunate it’s rated so low, it doesn’t make sense to me. It’s original and funny at times. I don’t get why people are saying it’s too artsy and film school like, when the whole film felt conversational and realistic. I much prefer this over anything that’s been put out in the last decade. You have to see it!

Blind Date's dvd has the barest of skeletal design; after a few less than appealing movie previews the dvd title page appears as a series of personal ads enclosing a square frame that shows a scene or scenes from the film. This film is strange, initially appealing, at times offensive, and it reveals the characters of a wife and her husband who have blind dates to try and recover the love of their relationship after their daughter has died. It tends to offensiveness when showing the husband's magic act in his bar in which he finds objects in his pants and in a scene during which he claims to have been sexual with his own mother. The film's structure is like a series of one act plays that revolve around a particular personal ad that they have placed, the narrator who is barely heard from apparently is the daughter. The daughter died in a car accident, her parents surviving it, and the cause of the accident apparently is inattentiveness of the parents while driving. Music is used to good effect to highlight what the story is revealing. Somewhat amusing but also bordering on offensive is a scene in which the husband portrays a blind man meeting his date in which he stumbles around, occasionally gropes his wife and uses his cane to be provocative. A touching moment is when he proposes to her and she refuses him, she coming to tears. A distasteful scene is played out in the bar's washroom with her in the toilet stall smoking. The story apparently ends when they both commit suicide. 3/10.

It is a rare occurrence when you are watching a movie and think to yourself "this is one of the worst movies I have ever seen" and then you start thinking "could this be worse than The Ice Storm?" Such was the case here. It was terribly boring. If you think you want to see Blind Date, go see the version with Bruce Willis and Kim Bassinger from the 80's.

I found it too be beautiful story of two suffering souls. It manages to rip your hear out and while it is still beating it stomps on it to quickly kill the pain.

Wow...some pretty tough critics here! I really enjoyed this one...I thought Tucci got just the right blend of pathos/humour/anger/charm and he hit a really nice rhythm with his direction-you felt like you were in good hands! The 2 leads are outstanding and, despite the overarching absurdism, there's a lot of subtle humanity in their performances...a real masterclass in pace and rhythm. It's important to remember what the point of films like this are and to judge them within their own frames of reference...of course it is stagey and theatrical and mannered...but it never pretends not to be and it works really well within these parameters.

Blind Date runs for under 90 minutes, but it feels much, much longer. Excruciatingly longer, to be precise. Nothing about the film-none of the role play scenarios, not the "beat it over your head" voice over by a child or the finale-rings true. Instead of being concerned with the two main characters, I found myself wondering who the people were populating the small bar...or where the bar was actually located...or why these two weren't seeing a professional counselor. In other words, I was thinking about anything to keep my mind active through each date since the movie is devoid of any oomph. We're not even given a reason to root for these people. There's no intrigue, no depth, no true characterization; everything we "know" about these people is false since they're playing other people. If the purpose is to lull the audience to sleep and test their willpower, Blind Date succeeds. In every other way, it can't help but fail.

One of my favorite movies.

Complete downer. Fine acting (Tucci is one of my favorite actors) beautifully filmed. All on one set gave it a theatrical feel as if it was on stage. I love the close ups of set pieces and props. The camera stays on faces so we can watch them act. But the characters find no redemption. The film presents no hope. They come into the story and leave it the same way, shattered. It left me with no hope. We all must progress, we can progress. But not in this film. It left me feeling empty. I think that was the objective of the film makers.

I wanted to rent this because I love Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci (again, thanks to seeing them together in "Easy A".) I can now officially say without shame that I have a woman crush on Clarkson. The premise was very intriguing. A couple try to reconcile their marriage, which has been ripped apart by the tragic death of their 5 year old daughter. The movie is actually narrated by said daughter. The man (Tucci) is trying his best to get things back to the way they were but, unfortunately, the depression is too much for his wife (Clarkson). Essentially, the film is a tragedy and the ending was a bit unsatisfactory and depressing for me because the characters couldn't find solace in *anything*, which makes it appear as if there's no healing whatsoever when parents lose a child. Not very helpful to parents who watch this and maybe *have* lost a kid.

Engaging yet kind of creepy at the same time.

Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci(who also directed) prove with the melancholic and episodic chamber piece "Blind Date" that they can almost make anything work. Tucci plays Don, who we are told by a narrator(Sarah Hyland) is a magician who works awfully hard at not being very good. As a way to invigorate their crumbling marriage, he and his wife Janna(Clarkson) play a series of games, pretending they are on a blind date, trying to return to a point in their relationship when their love for each other was at its peak. They are also trying to forget(what exactly is revealed about halfway through the movie and in the trailer) which a lot of people try to do when they watch something or someone that they hope will make them laugh. But to paraphrase Watchmen #1, what happens when the jester can no longer laugh himself?

Both Tucci and Clarkson give fine performances. But not even their acting skills can save this film from its self. The plot never really goes anywhere nor is it interesting enough the ending is far too melodramatic and the narration is choppy throughout. Not even the revelation of who the narrator is does anything to emotionally tie to the story. This was a film best left unremade.

Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson? You really can't go wrong...

I was drawn to this, being a big fan of Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson, but the film never comes together. Feels like a string of vignettes with an on again/off again voiceover. The ending would be more powerful had the previous 80 minutes been as emotionally wrenching as the filmmakers wanted it to be. The whole piece was strangely paced and felt like a rehearsal for a stage play.

What an odd film - not at all what I was expecting and not remotely happy nor sweet, like I thought it might be. It was actually rather depressing and the ending was shocking. I am a lover of Stanley Tucci, which is why I gave this movie a shot, and it's because of him that I continued to watch it and somewhat enjoyed it. He gives a great performance and is a pleasure to watch, per usual. I love his whole vibe in this and thought he had a great character. But apart from his performance, this movie was greatly lacking. Not one I will be watching again. But have to give it at least 2 stars, simply because of Mr. Tucci.

Fine performers like Tucci and Clarkson cannot keep this dreary heartless thing from looking like a private workout session at the Actors Workshop.

I really liked the idea of this movie- a couple who roleplays. I thought it could be done in an interesting way, but this just bored me out of my mind. But this gets a 1 star instead of a 1/2 star because I watched a worse movie the same day.

A really pleasant surprise! I watched it with no particular reason - and ended up really liking it: through a strange plot it really shows the drama between two estranged people connected by sorrow and tragedy.
