A Dark Place Reviews

Everyone that gave this high ratings must be from Pennsylvania. Also most of it isn't believable.

It's a masterpiece in storytelling, and the lead's performance is worthy of awards.

I absolutely loved the storyline! Kept me glued to the screen from beginning to end. Andrew Scott played his part magnificently well - I will definitely be watching it again ….. and again. A big thumbs up from me 👍

Suspenseful, great acting plus entertaining…… this doesn’t happen often. I very much enjoyed and appreciated this movie. 2 hours very well spent.

Andrew Scott gives a powerful performance as a single father with a big heart. Heart pounding moments from beginning to end.

This is an underrated movie in my opinion. The acting was fantastic. Andrew Scott was very believable as an awkward, simple man driven to solve a mystery. Some reviewers didn't understand why he had the drive to find the answers but they weren't following the movie and character close enough to see that this obsessiveness was part of his nature and from his own life trauma's where no one bothered to care. I do believe there is underlying theme here lost on some viewers as well - that the simplest person in the room is often the wisest most moral person - "Out of the mouth of babes" comes to mind when I think about the premise of this movie. Andrew's Scott's conveyance of his character's loss of innocence as he discovered the depravity of those around him was also spot on.

It's a tour de force for Andrew Scott. He seems to have understood this character perfectly. Donny is socially awkward, weird, but no fool, no idiot, and finally, no coward. It's a mystery, yes, but the story is about how Donny discovers, then pursues, the mystery. The mood of the film is somber, the filming reflecting the overcast weather, the oppressive humid heat, quietly keeping the tension alive at just the right level. The director did quite well establishing space for the actor's to portray their characters rather than just rush through lines of dialogue. It seems weird to me that the professional critics seem to have wanted or expected a more standard mystery flick. It's about the main character Donny from the start, so I don't understand their confusion. Anyway, ignore them and see how impressive this film is for yourself.

Small town USA, dark movie. Only thing I couldn't get behind is the entire town being in on the diddling cover up.

Not sure why he took such an interest in the case but other than a few questions good movie.

Started well and the main chacter was interesting. But there was no setup for why he immediately became so absorbed by the case or why he pushed so hard. No real answers came at the end, apart from who the culprit was. The main character became more and more unlikeable, when things should have been headed the other way. With a stronger plot, it could have been good.

It was a breath of fresh air. Some of it not based in reality but felt good at the end

Kept my attention the entire time. Superb acting, script, directing and cinematography. Strong, original story. Good mystery and emotionally compelling until the end. The ending was an unexpected surprise but it also stopped a little too short hence not a full five stars.

"A Dark Place" is such a slice of Americana, both in setting and atmosphere, you'd never guess it was a British film (and both of the protagonists are from the UK). It features two excellent performances and a plot that's, let's say, pretty hard to swallow. It takes place in a depressed Pennsylvania steel town where a young boy has disappeared and has been found drowned in a creek. The cops are writing it off as an accident. But garbage truck driver Danny (Andrew Scott) suspects otherwise. Danny is a high functioning autistic, so nobody in the town takes him seriously—except his partner on his garbage route, Donna (Bronagh Waugh), who assists him in an investigation. She patronizes his quirky personality, but she doesn't condescend. She clearly likes him in spite of his weird behavior. The story is a mystery, but its more character-centered than procedural. Scott's performance as Danny is complex and nuanced. He's obviously intelligent, and he's not naïve. To me, the best aspect of the film is watching him in every scene. The facial tics, the body language….No doubt, Scott did his homework concerning autism. Waugh's Donna is physically formidable, attractive but tough and cynical. And she trusts Danny. She's the perfect foil. Unfortunately, in spite of the memorable performances, the story gets pretty implausible. Danny does a couple of things that should have gotten him arrested. One of his acts in particular, which happens about two thirds into the film, really threw me, it was so hard to believe. But then, people on the autism spectrum can be obsessive. The solution to the murder is mildly surprising. But again, the focus is on the characters more than the mystery. Four stars for Scott and Waugh; two and a half for the story. I'm calling it three stars. Worth a watch, just to see fine actors at work.

7/10. It is a bit slow paced, has some holes (how is he not arrested for that digging expedition?), and needed more twists, but excellent performances - particularly Andrew Scott as the awkward, unstable lead - and competent direction were enough to make this a compelling watch. It might help to think of the movie primarily as a character study and secondarily as a mystery. Scott's Donny is sympathetic and often heartbreaking as he tries to find the killer of a local boy. Though awkward and obsessive to an unhealthy degree, I never doubted his heart was in the right place, and that he was driven by a compassion for his fellow man that he, probably because of his mental state/capacity, seldom has had reciprocated. Highest praise to Scott for really nailing this character, good use of setting and score to build atmosphere where the screenplay couldn't. Problematic, but worth a watch.

Thank you. There are very few times with this subject matter that victims feel understood, advocated for or vindicated. You not only touched on the sexually and physically abused but the misunderstood. I applaud all of you and thank you. I enjoyed it all the way through and never got bored, though it is a "slow burn" Great acting by all
