Tyler G Holds up pretty well for a Silent Era film. The gags are charming and occasionally funny. An enjoyable, decent film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/22/24 Full Review Nick M Another fantastic Chaplin picture. It's so nice to see him making pictures in his own time rather than having to rush them out at a contracted clip. This is his first film under a new $1 million contract with First National that merely specifies 8 films, but no time frame. The camera work is as vibrant and alive as the film itself. There were hardly any of the old gags at all in this. Rather, much of the comedy emerged organically from the story. Even though it is still very much a comedy, Chaplin wrote in just enough pathos that I felt invested in the lives of the three main characters, and was rewarded at the end by finding them all living out a happy ending together. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/17/24 Full Review j m This short is not that well known but it deserves to be seen. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Quite a funny short, with lots of memorable, inventive bits and gags including some very well made scenes with dogs, but also an emotionally engaging one that will have you rooting for our hero in no time. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Great classic silent movie with some very funny scenes, especially the scene with Charlie and his brother Syd. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review sean l A quick-tempo silent treat from Charlie Chaplin's creative heyday. Here he rescues and befriends a perfectly-matched little mutt, personality for miles, to join him in his daily duties: sneaking into bars, swiping free samples from food vendors and sleeping in the fence-shaded dirt of an abandoned lot. That's perfectly ripe ground for Chaplin, who expertly delivers laughs in his own inimitable style, though I do wonder why the pup isn't featured more often. Most times, he's referenced off-screen or written out of the scene entirely, which seems like a wasted opportunity. Still, the sight gags and wind-ups are good enough that we've soon forgotten all about the once-promising tandem act. Not that Chaplin is any stranger to carrying a film on his own. His smoothest scenes - a clever repeat escape from the pesky policeman, a cheeky disappearing act at the expense of the local baker, riotous hand pantomime with a KO'd criminal and his hoodlum buddy - can be seen and adored in a vacuum. They might not be as grand or cohesive as his later features, but these shorter films are a veritable jungle gym for Chaplin's brand of simple, efficient, high-level clowning.
