Yo creo que lo que vuelve encantadora a esta película está en su forma de retratar la vida misma, no con un final perfecto o con un “Vivieron felices para siempre”, los personajes terminan la película en una posición parecida en donde empezaron, pero con una perspectiva más grande dónde encontraron su verdadero valor y propósito, lo cual me pareció grandioso, ya que siento que es más fácil empatizar con este tipo de finales en el que la vida no siempre será perfecta, porque aprendamos la lección no se significa que nuestra vida solo irá cuesta arriba, hablando con spoilers, Martin a pesar de poder volver a ver a sus hijas no volvió con su esposa y no recuperó su puesto cómo figura mediática intachable, Maureen se abrió a conocer a más personas, pero no se significa que no volverá a sentirse sola, lo mismo con J.J., a pesar de terminar junto a Jesse no quiere decir que no volverá a experimentar un vacío en sus existencia o en recordar su “fama” cómo parte de una banda lo mismo con Jesse, a pesar de terminar en buenos términos con su padre no quiere decir que no se volverá a pelear o que no volverá a extrañar a su hermana; la película en sus 3 actos remarca mucho eso, y siento que más que una moraleja híper positiva (que a veces es necesario en otro tipo de narrativas y que también agradezco), la misma nos recuerda que por más que deseemos no podemos construir una historia perfecta, habrá cientos de tropiezos, mayormente ocasionados por nuestra estupidez, pero también es una lección de abrazar los momentos en los que somos genuinamente felices, aunque sea solo por un momento, y ese siento que es el mensaje y sentido de la vida que los 4 protagonistas encontraron a lo largo de la película. Una historia que maneja de forma fantástica tanto el drama cómo la comedia, es triste a la vez que esperanzadora, una cinta que grita que es uno de esos dramas ingleses que amamos ver, tal vez la narrativa en algunos momentos no funcione, pero aun así siento que es una de esas película que todos necesitamos ver.

I don't hate the movie like a lot of people do. For me, it's a little bit of a different kind of film, being a comedy that's not dark, but still centered around suicide. I found it to be fine, helped by a great cast; and, in the end, everything was fine.

Unable to give the serious issue at its center the dramatic heft it deserves, A Long Way Down falls well short of its potential.

This movie proves that having big names doesn't translate to a great film. Even with the ineffable talents of Toni Collette, Sam Neill, Rosamund Pike and Pierce Brosnan, the plot feels contrived and jerky. There are some moments that genuinely teeter on the edge of meaning and begin to explore the characters feelings beyond surface level, and I wanted to lean through the screen and give them a good shove over that edge (no pun intended). Unfortunately those moments are very few and far between, and what fills the gaps is a whole lot of trivialising mental ill health, unrealistically portrayals of suicidal people and problems being magically solved and tied up in a neat bow. I am not even going to discuss the fact that we are supposed to feel sympathy for a 50 year old man who has been to prison for sleeping with a 15 year old. The only character that is really intriguing (until the final scene) is JJ, played by Aaron Paul. His problems aren't easily summed up or solved and his character felt more complicated and ultimately more real than any other. This was helped along by some excellent acting on Paul's part.

However, it is a pretty clichéd exploration and predictable ending, despite its star cast, which includes Pierce Bronson, Toni Collette and Aaron Paul.

Pierce Brosnan just doesn't hit the same notes as the rest of the suicidal quartet. It's an interesting idea, and Brosnan aside (and the bizarrely cast Sam O'Neill in a cameo pastiche of a feckless politician), is actually rather well played. But ultimately hurtles disappointingly into the pavement-splattering of a schmaltzy ending. Not a waste of 90 minutes; worth a view for Imogen Potts' and Toni Collette's performances and ably supported by the always watchable Aaron Paul.

A little far fetched, but this movie's heart is in the right place. Decent performances, although I generally don't care a lot about movies where the point is to whine about your problems. Still, there is enough interesting narrative to keep my attention.

Tratto dal romanzo di Nick Hornby, "Non buttiamoci giù" cerca di mantenere lo spirito sarcastico ed ironico, lasciando poco spazio ai momenti più tristi e delicati. Decisamente discutibile è la scelta di ridurre al minimo il minutaggio, lasciando poco spazio ad attori del calibro di Rosamund Pike, e banalizzando alcune scene che sembrano quasi tagliate nel montaggio. I dialoghi funzionano bene grazie anche al cast di altissimo rango su cui fa affidamento il film; la sensazione però è che quasi tutti gli attori siano sfruttati meno del dovuto e il senso che lascia il film, seppur piacevole, è di aver sprecato un'occasione.
